The 2-30 Infantry Battalion found itself in quite the Social Media Poop Storm; which resulted in my previous video. A video where I took soldiers' accounts of their Command Sergeant Major and then critiqued his policy of negatively counseling soldiers for cold weather injuries. This led to the Commander calling me, followed by a call from his wife. Both were concerned I was being taken advantage of by a false narrative perpetuated by disgruntled soldiers. So I did what any sane man would do. I promised him I would dig deeper to verify if the information I had acquired was true or false. This is the result. Buckle up.

When I served in the Marine Corps, we had this happen almost exactly as well. Our Battalion SgtMaj and in league with our Battalion Commander basically told the Battalion Aid Station Commander that she was no longer to issue any more light duty chits to any Marines for any reason. For the Marines its slightly different in terms of how we get medical care since we dont have our own medics and rely on Navy Corpsman. Now while the Navy Aid Station Commander for the Battalion is a Navy officer, she still reported to our Battalion Commander. For months, no one in the Battalion was being issued Light Duty for injuries and told "heres some Motrin, go back to your unit". This was apparently being done by the SgtMaj and LtCol to boost the Battalion readiness numbers for Ops and Deployments. About 6 months into this idiocy, we had a Marine drop dead from a heart attack on a run. Kid was in his early 20s so a heart attack isnt something you'd expect from someone that age. Turns out, he had been going to the Aid Station for weeks prior complaining about chest pains and unusual pains when he was on runs. Now this guy was not a sh**bag Marine at all, very fit, good PFT scores, etc. But because of the "unofficial" policy enacted by these 2 jackasses at the top, every time he visited they would just give him pain killers, rubber stamp things and send him on his way. Once this kid dropped dead on a run, an NCIS investigation got launched and then like rats deserting a sinking ship, finally everyone in the know started dropping dimes the size of manhole covers on what was going on and finally the SgtMaj, BN CO, XO, Aid Station Commander and a slew of other senior enlisted and senior officers got relieved of duty and or re-assigned. This was of course back before the Internet was a big thing and before KZbin, Twitter, IG, etc even existed. What bothers me the most and what I hate to say tainted my view on the Marine Corps was how long it took for something to be done about this kind of crap. I wasnt a career enlisted person, I did 8yrs (6 mandated by my MOS) and bailed for agency work afterward but like you, because of this incident when I was just a PFC/LCpl, I made it my mission to always stand up for Marines being f**cked over or railroaded which relegated me to permanent SSgt (E6). It was by accident I even pinned on E6 because if the command had their way I would have been stuck at E5. So I just want to say a heartfelt Thank You to you for bringing this kind of crap to light and trying to look out for other Soldiers. Its a sacrifice not everyone is aware of you are making and I can tell you that people appreciate it. You're more than the rank you wear on your collar my good man. Love the videos and wish I found this channel a lot sooner than I did, haha. Thanks again.

The idea that a soldier should blindly follow the person with the most stripes went out with the Nuremberg trials, time and time again since then soldiers have been definitively held to account for their actions in various militaries across several conflicts. If you want a thinking soldier to follow orders you have to instill the belief that the person ordering them has good reason to give that order and actually cares if you make it home alive or not, behaviour like this video talks about is probably gonna lead to a lot more questioning of orders down the line if this isn't put right and the officers involved disgraced and discharged.

This to me is where the fine line of embrace the suck / cowboy up / common sense all merge into a single area. (Part of me is I agree with AC well 99% of me) but that 1% is nagging my brain. Was the CSM wrong absolutely, however again part a very small part of me is training, learning to embrace the suck (suffering just for suffering) is needed in line units, obviously not all the time and things could have been handled way different, however, you need to train suffer just to suffer, lay in freezing water just to know and push your limits, obviously if you get trench foot or hypothermia yeah have a medic take care of you but, all in all you fight and kill for American values, knowing when your frozen and can barley think and have learnt to push on is what wins battles not its cold so no training. Many ww2 vets have stated the only thing that kept them alive was the stupid level of harsh training they received to prepare for D-day. Also special forces go to sere school just to experience this type of treatment, (yes, i am splitting hairs and playing devils advocate) and this is where the csm was wrong is yes you can have your stringent stupid training (again its what pushes you to know your limitations and know when to just need to cowboy up and drive on) however they should have had ample time to warm up and see to their wounds (that is just the stupid part).
@michaelkerr6220
@michaelkerr6220 3 жыл бұрын
@@berryb745 I agree to an extent, and we probably have similar feelings on the matter. But I think it's worth noting there's a difference between "embrace the suck" because of a situation you find yourself in, and a situation you're deliberately put into (and a grey area between the two). Let's say you go on your field cycle in May, packing list comes out and there's no snivel gear (always have wet weather gear) on it because the expected weather is sunny and warm. Then while you're out there you run into some days where its cold and shitty. Well now you embrace the suck and you get some personal character development. That's not the same as having a field cycle in January/February, where you have snivel gear in your packing list specifically because of the expected weather, and then telling soldiers they're not allowed to use it. Now there's more too it than that (you dont let soldiers wear waffles when it's 50-60 degrees out, that's improper use of gear). But generally speaking, you get issued gear for a reason, and training is when you're supposed to learn how to properly utilize that gear. Basically I look at it as "I'm in a situation I'm not prepared for and have to learn to suck it up and cope." compared to "I'm in a situation I am prepared for, but am not being allowed to fix." As for denying medical treatment to soldiers, usually that's something that would be a big deal and be cause for an investigation. I'd be surprised if this is the last we heard about it.

All but one of my drill sergeants were Viet Nam vets so they knew what it meant to take care of your feet, they had to to survive in moist, warm climates. I retired after being drawn into an instance very similar to what you describe. As a chief, I stood against an "O" due to being told "You need to be more like the junior officers". To that I said "I'm a Chief, not an officer! If I act like them, my enlisted will feel detached from the command with no representation." She rode me for the next two years and I finally gave up and walked away. The junior enlisted look up to us as mentors and you have to watch out for them, but at the same time show that you believe in the system. That guy's wife contacting you is massively inappropriate especially after he talked to you. I'm glad the vibe I got from this video was "I'm not stopping to point out stupid. I had a 15 year E6 who was one of the best performers/Weapons squad leaders I’ve ever had in my platoon. But the guy got screwed because he bit back on a 1SG and Company commander for putting his guys in a situation that could’ve been life threatening. As a PSG, I always looked at those guys like gold. I never had to worry about them taking care of my boys, and more importantly if I was doing something jacked up, they’d let me know…..rapidly. I wish this guy would make the list one day. @Mr. Shlock You're completely missing the point. Suffering is an excellent and necessary tool in military training, no one is denying that. The point is, the suffering you're inflicting on the grunts should serve the purpose of training them and should not result in *casualties*. Forcing the privates to PT until they can barely stand, or march for miles with heavy equipment through harsh weather, is training. Threatening them with disciplinary measures should they seek medical care when the flesh of their feet starts bloating and sloughing off is cruelty and serves no purpose but preserving the fragile ego of incompetent superiors.

Same shit with me during Jan 1991 Desert Storm. I was on guard duty. Rainy and cold in the wee hours of the morning. One shift it was all I could do to breathe with all my equipment on. I had bronchitis as a kid and it was way worse. I told the Sergeant of the Guard I needed to go to BAS and see a Corpsman. He was an E-5 and I was a lowly E-3 pretty much right out of my technical training. He told me not to go or else he would put me on extra shifts, etc. After a couple days, I had to go see a Corpsman. They did their checks and after giving me emergency heavy duty antibiotics and a nebulizer, he said I was on the verge of pneumonia. I think it's in my medical records as Bronchial Asthmatic Spasms or something. Was put in Fleet Five hospital for a few days just in time to do one more day of guard duty, then go back to my normal platoon. That guy was a dick for no reason and literally put my health at risk.

I'm a retired Marine officer. I've seen a couple dozen of your videos now including the one which sparked this one. This is the best video of your videos I've seen to date. I've run into this toxic leadership before at the CO level, once with an Army Bn CO, his CSM, and his LTCOL (Sel) OpsO in Iraq in 2003, and again with a Marine Regt CO later in my career. In the first case, karma intervened and the arrogance of the Army Bn CO (to whose command our Marine reserve company was attached) caught up with him because the AQI bastard who shot him dead didn't give a sh*t about the curfew our hero personally tried to enforce. In the second case, the Regt CO was slapped with not one, but two rightfully deserved Cmd Climate Surveys, but in both cases, his buddies at Division protected him. This became just another case of unchecked toxic leadership investigated by higher authority but dismissed because high-ranking officers are protecting their buddies of the same rank. The injustice here--assuming due diligence of Sgt Hy has been done, and it appears to have been--is off the charts. Had I been the Regimental CO, I'd have relieved both the CO and CSM. This is UNSAT. Integrity used to actually mean something, but for the last 30 years, it has been nothing but an empty word. Those who do the right thing--enlisted AND officers alike--are punished. Those who "play the game" regardless of who gets hurt by the decisions and egregious failures of leadership (if you want to call it that) are advanced, and THAT is why we have complete idiots running the country from the Alzheimer-in-Chief to every one of his Service Chiefs, down to people like the 2-30 Bn CO and his failure of a CSM who thinks a training evolution is the same as the Battle of Chosin.

I asked the gate MP to stand by, I'd be right there. (like, 2 buildings away) The gate MP, of course, had done nothing wrong. I wound up talking my wife down, reminding her that he (a Spec4, me a 1LT in Force Mod) telling her that she had to apologize right then and there, which she did. I picked up the phone, called the Fulda Bowling alley and asked them to make a large pizza with everything (GREAT fricking pizza, BTW) and I'd be down to pick it up. I hung up, apologized to the MP myself, sent her home, went and got the pizza, brought it back to the guard shack, apologized to both the guys there and went back to pushing paper.

My 1st assignment was in Korea, where the prevention of cold injuries was stressed. The fact that this CSM made that statement and the BN CDR supported and minimized that Is unconscionable. “Brigade lawyer” = Brigade Judge Advocate. A credentialed attorney that serves commanders’ legal interests for the unit. If he’s calling you, it’s because the commander said “oh shit, did I fuck up?” Or “is what this guy is doing legal?” He’s also the person who ALL article 15s and other legal actions go through. If somehow the BJA does push through an article 15 because soldiers got hurt during training, when those soldiers go to trial defense services, those TDS attorneys are going to annihilate those article 15s.

The Army hates it when someone they cannot silence starts telling the truth. Just reaching out to any form of media, without the express consent from Command, is a punishable offence under UCMJ. As all soldiers fall under General Orders not to do so. UCMJ is outdated, class based, and not in any form conducive to justice. It is merely a punitive, class based system. Any commissioned officer, historically wealthy individuals, as Military Commissions at one time were literally purchased. Can prefer charges against any enlisted soldier. No proof, no evidence, no questions asked. Article 15 of UCMJ is a catch-all non-judiciary punishment. Meaning there is no trial or chance of criminal conviction. However, Article 15 penalties can be issued for nearly anything from dropping a cigarette butt on the ground, to being late for duty. Penalties can include loss of 1 rank, for E-4 and below. Loss of one month's pay. Additional duty (longer working hours than the rest of the unit.) Confinement to quarters, etc, etc, etc. Despite there not being any chance of a conviction, it still goes on the soldier's record. Article 15's always affect promotability.

Thank you sir, for seeing the integrity in Angry Cops' purpose here. As a former USAF Senior NCO I supported many GOOD commanders and other officers who all lived our Core Values, but particularly that 1st one: Integrity First Take some time to respond to Mr. "Unapologetic Prepper's" response a little after yours to let him know what you think about his concern for blind trust of bad leadership, particularly in the face of decisions they've made that violate the big three: Illegal Immoral Unethical

My team was on exercise on FT Bragg. Rain started with lightening arcing across the sky. Since we were an LLVI team, we had rucksacks full of metal equipment. I had my team take off their gear and move away from it. My det sergeant got pissed, told me to have them ruck up and move to the extraction point. I told him no, we'd move when the lightening storm stopped. I caught shit for it, but better that than five dead guys.

Was in basic in '94 and then a 9 month AIT, which means I had nearly a year of Drills making life exciting. So when I say I understand "Drill gonna take care of you...", it hits home. We had a great DS as well as a few good Drills that didn't let us slack, but never pushed more than could be given. The 2 Drills who did take things a bit far, always seemed to get interrupted (for some thing or someone) by the Drills who knew when to call it. Mind you this was Ft. Bliss and 115 deg days as baseline (+120 deg at peaks). Trust is hard to give to a guy working your tail every day, but damn did they have ours.

SSG Hy has been a pillar of selflessness and integrity for years now. He's been under fire multiple times over the years and still persisted with exposing misconduct and upholding not only the Army's values, but American values as well. It is absolutely unjust that he's been essentially barred from promotion despite being one of the most candidly virtuous men I've ever seen. He isn't afraid of the consequences of doing the right thing and steps up the the plate every time. There has to be something more we can do for this man. Does anybody know of a way that will get AC the recognition he deserves in both the Army and the civilian sector?

@@dacrackhead I know that that's why he does it, and that's exactly why he deserves more. There has to be something we can do for him beyond watching and buying his merch. This man is a champion for the lower enlisted and his love of the Army is enough to bring him to tears. If that doesn't warrant commendation, and the possibility for career advancement in the very least, I don't know what does. The Army has failed him in this regard and he shouldn't be made to take it on the chin every time.
