Also mousesack telepathically told geralt that something was wrong with the fake Ciri. That’s why he went looking. It wasn’t by chance that he found her.

In the books the wish seemed to me it was that they get a child, considering her surprised reaction after he asks it. And what Ciri becomes for both of them later on. And the first wish in the book is very different. The djinn wasn't pleased at all.

@Nicolas Ferreiro If someone is curious: a priestess that Geralt meet taught him words to banish evil spirits (or something in these terms, you get the idea). @cenauge4 жыл бұрын
Just some notes and clarifications: That whole "Geralt coincidentally sees fake Ciri curtsy to real Ciri" thing wasn't coincidence, it was Mousesack. There is no way he was on board with lying to Geralt and trying to defy destiny, so he magicked open that door that led Geralt to precisely where he needed to be to discover Calanthe's deception. The Dragon wasn't being a dick when he exposed Geralt's wish; he literally said something like "I see your destiny" and so he pretty clearly saw that Geralt (by way of Djinn shenanigans) was messing with destiny. A Geralt that is still honeymooning with Yennifer is a Geralt that is not on his way to Cintra to claim Ciri. Speaking of the Djinn, I liked that Geralt was all "I know it is in this lake." Subtle nod to all that Witcher-y investigation that didn't get much play in the rest of the series. Ciri in the woods was all about advancing Ciri's only real story arc this season: losing everybody and finding Geralt. Because they changed it so that Geralt and Ciri had never met before they finally meet in episode 8 (instead of how it happened in the books), her being in that forest was basically just to enable her to lose Mousesack for good, and then have Dara leave her. Speaking of the Doppler and not knowing stuff about Mousesack; the Doppler is implied to know facts, not feelings. Ciri asked him basically questions about how he felt about leaving his home and how he felt about the weather. Mousesack saying he feels like Cintra was his home or that he has arthritis doesn't directly relate to whether he missed Skellige or hated the cold, but Ciri knew how the real Mousesack felt.

That witcher was killed by the Striga. But Triss buried him and kept his death a secret so that the people wouldn't panick even more. yes, the political side of this is it was announced that the striga is dead, killed by Foltest soldiers, therefore gaining favors from temerian citizens & the civil unrest from the coal miners was averted. The main issue with Triss is that she was not what the books portrayed. In the books she was young, bubbly and always looking for a way to get into bed with geralt. She was incredibly jealous of Yennefer but also yennefer's friend. It's a complex part that was simply pushed to the side to make room for the three main characters. If they had made 2 seasons or more episodes per season, it might have been better but I understand their impatience to get to the structured part of the book series. As for Yennefer, they actually got her motivations right but it's a bit difficult to follow. She begins as a selfish young sorceress that is hungry for power. Then, as she gains experience as a sorceress, she regrets losing the choice to have children as she can't think of a better way to leave a legacy. This is explained more in the books and she tries a lot of different things to try and regain her fertility. In the end, she gains her child legacy in Ciri.
@Mr.BluePants4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're right. And imo Triss was so miscast... That actress isn't ugly or anything or that sort (she's actually pretty irl) and she might be very nice and all, but she just doesn't look like Triss, at all. Sure in the books her hair isn't BRIGHT RED like in the games, but it's also not just brown and she's not part black either. A lot of people say "oh but her hair in the books is described to be like chestnuts, so she has brown hair" - well the author is not referring to regular edible brown chestnuts but actually the unedible/toxic horse chestnuts. Those are also brown, but they have a red-ish tone to it, kinda like a mix of chestnut and cherry. So she's basically still a red head, just not cartoonish like in the games. Which is also why Yennefer makes fun of her hair from time to time, it stands out.

Well, Triss didn't show up in the books until the saga (AFAIK). Her being there in the Striga story is the TV show's way of introducing her early. I think it's part of that the battle of Sodden hill is not directly described in the books, it's just told by other characters or maybe flashbacks (yes, all the mages were there during the battle). But Netflix decided to make it the climax of season 1 so they needed to introduce the more important characters early.

For anyone interested in the books but confused with where to start: The Last Wish - Read first. It's a collection of short stories focusing on Geralt and world building. There is an overarching story to the book where Geralt is recovering from injuries at a temple of Melitele. The short stories are fit in between this overarching story. Many of the show episodes derive from here such as Foltest's Striga, Renfri & Stregabore, Geralt meeting Yennifer, and the Unexpected Surprise of Centra. (TW3 fans also meet Crach an Craite in this same story.) The Sword of Destiny: the second collection of short stories. This is where Ciri as a child and Geralt meet and the talk of his Destiny begins. Later near the end of the book, it becomes a fever dream and we learn about the Battle of Sodden etc. Blood of Elves: from here things change a bit. No longer are the books broken into short stories but instead become the continued main story of Nilfgaard, the search for Ciri etc. I've only begun BoE and most of the perspectives have come from Triss or Ciri so far. Geralt is still obviously a major character but the perspective shifts away from him. From what I've heard, TW1 video game from CD Project Red picks up AFTER the main novelization conclusion and alters the ending to continue the story (Geralt losing his memory etc.) So TW 1,2 & 3 games are technically after the books story.

@@arconesaeradan3262 The "Dandelion" translation is actually originally from the English translation of the books. The reason they translated it that way is because his name, Jaskier, in Polish means "Buttercup" but they thought that has a negative connotation in English when used for a man (e.g. "Suck it up, buttercup") so they used another common yellow flower "Dandelion" instead and the games went with that too. I think the problem is that even Dandelion is a kind of silly and effeminate sounding name for a man in a way that Jaskier isn't in Polish culture. So later translations and this series have reverted to just using the Polish name.

I’m Polish and just like you, I liked it. But I had to watch it again in English and try to pretend I never read the books or played the game. Initially I couldn’t focus on the show because of the atrocious and severe interventions in the original story. Driads using crossbows. Ciri leaving Brokilon with help from some unusual Elf kid. Mousesack being killed by a Doppler and then him trying to kidnap Ciri. That is just wrong. Story with Renfri is devoid of its depth. The whole conversation about who is a monster is nearly gone. The fight was supposed to happen on a very crowded market in front of hundreds of people, instead he kills them all in some back alley in under 2 minutes. We are supposed to believe he is the Butcher of Blaviken after seeing this ? The scene where Pavetta is shown has been pauperised as well. We don’t get any of the conversations the islanders had between them, nor do we get the rather excellent conversation Calanthe had with Geralt. The way Calanthe plays and looks I think is very wrong. She acts and looks nothing like the Lioness of Cintra that she was supposed to be. She later begs Geralt . Calanthe ? Begging ? That is way out of line. The story of the jinn looks cheap and so does the story of the dragon hunt. A handful of people walking some mountains who then arrive at a cave to kill the most pathetic looking dragon I have ever seen. It’s just as bad as the Polish Witcher from 2001( which is so bad Siskel and Ebert would have died of an aneurysm have they seen it) They showed none of the amazing conversation and banter between Jaskier, the dwarfs and Geralt. In the book it was a massive escapade, with the king and his troops and we learn so much about the world and characters from those conversations leading up to the battle with the dragon. Instead we get a bastardised version that is worth nothing in terms of showing us the world and it’s relations. It would have more value to remove the dragon and show the other characters. The ever amusing Yarpen Zigrin is a joke. Vea and Tea suddenly speak in common? Borch Three Jackdaws and the zerrikans jump into the abbys ? And not to mention what they did to Triss. Most recognisable thing about her, reason why she was thought to have been killed in the battle of Sodden- her amazing ginger hair is now played by an actress with black hair. That hurt me deeply as I love Triss. One thing I also noticed is that in the space of 8 episodes I haven’t really learned who those Witchers are. I watched an entire season and all I know of the main protagonist is that he is a mutant and that kids who try to become witchers often don’t make it. The Slavic and Celtic mythology in which the world is steeped is somewhat lost on the screen. On my second watch through I was past that pain and I must say, having watched it from a different point of view I was pleased. I think if we believe the show runner and Mr. Baginski we can expect a much improved second season.

Well think about that for a moment. Geralt slaughters a group of bandits in a back alley where nobody witnesses it, they see only the carnage left in its wake. If we saw that happen in todays society, a butcher is what we would call the guy with a weapon in his hand and covered in blood. So this part made sense, the locals assuming Geralt slaughtered them unprovoked is a logical conclusion given that he himself and the girl (who was likely traumatized to the carnage) are the only witnesses.

It also gives relevance to multiple viewings. An anime I rewatch from time to time is The Twelve Kingdoms. During my first time watching it, I was just as confused as the main character. The anime just starts using dialect and terms right away that you don't get definitions for until quite a few episodes into the first season. Also, certain characters appear that you don't know or understand why are there, until much later in the first season or even in the second season. But once you watch it all, it all makes sense. Once you understand the world and its culture, terms, and history, those earlier episodes make a lot more sense now.... and you appreciate it more.

But it prevents secondary characters like Triss to have a progression. She goes from this nihilistic stance to ¨I want a baby¨. There are moments where dialogs are just too rushed. If you want to do jumps and be each episode auto-conclusive you need to make more episodes to tell the same. They did 1:1 from the first 2 books wasting a lot of materia. Good show bad adaptation. Sometimes the best way to adapt is not to do a 1:1 adaptation since the format is completly different. Production and Henry Canvill carried the show.

concerning yennefer and the choice that she felt was stolen from her: she felt forced to sacrifice her ability to give birth for beauty and perfection because she thought those were the standards to being the king's mage (she was right). it was explained that there was no way she could be the king's personal mage if the reason for her deformity were be discovered (the mages were going to rat her out). thats why her character development is so well developed. when she says "i want everything," it is another way of saying that she does not want to give up anything to gain something else. she wants a baby because she does not want to feel like she had lost anything for the choice that she was forced to make. in general, she is a character that hates loss and only wants to gain.

About Yenn and her need of having a baby - Her change of perspective about child isnt showed right if you dont look close to every episode. Yenn become sorceress when Foltest was a child, in later episodes Geralt helps old Foltest with his daughter. By that time Geralt is already after Pavetta wedding so it means that there is at least 40+years of beetween episodes. I can guess that for beautiful, lonely, powerfull woman it is very much time to change mind about having a child. In all that time when she was a sorceress Men loved her mainly by her look or power. Dear Joe, tossing my 2 cents to the witcher! :D The one big problem I had with the series is the Gold Dragon story. There was the Knight who accompanied Yennefer, named Eykh of Denesle, and in the show they portrayed him as a comic relief moron who poops his pants and dies. In the books he was a very competent and truly honorable knight (he is the Father of Siegfried from the games), and his character survived the story, though had his legs broken by the dragon. Eykh was an antithesis to the witcher Geralt, he was equally stoic, and larger than life, but the character was used to contrast an knight's honor versus a witcher's silent made up codex. He was in fact more courageous and selfless than Geralt was at times in that story, and was a capable fighter. Same with the Reavers. The Reavers were not killed in the books, their backs were broken, but they weren't as evil and as badly punished. The Reavers have to reoccur later on in the plot, but they won't now.
