Hey Sam, Most sailors were right handed, so the steering oar was placed over or through the right side of the stern . Sailors began calling the right side the steering side, which soon became "starboard" by combining two Old English words: stéor (meaning "steer") and bord (meaning "the side of a boat") As the size of boats grew, so did the steering oar, making it much easier to tie a boat up to a dock on the side opposite the oar. This side became known as larboard, or "the loading side." Over time, larboard-too easily confused with starboard-was replaced with port. After all, this was the side that faced the port, allowing supplies to be ported aboard by porters. Hope this clears it up for you 👍

Port and starboard relate to either side of the boat when LOOKING FORWARD. Whereas left and right relate to the person and depends which way they are looking. So, port is the left side of the boat looking forward. Likewise starboard is the right hand side of the boat, again looking forward. That’s why the terms port and starboard are used. Otherwise it is all in the eye of the beholder. It’s sort of analogous with north south east and west which are cardinal directions irrespective of which way someone is looking.

This positioning facilitated comfortable forward-facing navigation. For smaller crafts, loading goods from the right side posed challenges, leading to docking with the left side against port wharves. The term “larboard” was eventually replaced by “port” due to confusion with “starboard” during navigation. During the colonization era, sailors worldwide adopted the terms. SpecSavers are ok for reading glasses, the same ones you can buy at your local chemist. Your best bet is to go to your GP and get a referral to an eye specialist, if your GP thinks you need one. Beware of franchises. I really engoy watching your videos, cheers.
