Air pollution is one of the biggest issues faced by mankind, causing serious lung-related disorders. Research has shown that 80% of lung care patients these days are non-smokers who are exposed to air pollution. Covid has further worsened the matter with recovered persons having compromised lungs which is leading us towards a lung cancer epidemic. To discuss this important issue Smita Prakash spoke with Dr Arvind Kumar, Chairman, Institute of Chest Surgery at Medanta Hospital. He is a leading voice when it comes to lung-related issues and has been an advocate for better lung health through his organisation the Lung Care Foundation.

I really wished the interviewer would cross question the doc when he shrugged off parali burning over a wide area over a period of several days as not a major contributing factor but jumped in to slip in a comment regarding the bursting of crackers. So, a few hours of crackers being burst is a much larger contributory factor to Delhi's poor air quality as compared to parali burning ? Really wish this was questioned. Also, the IIT Delhi study does pin the blame on parali burning to poor AQI of Delhi. So, why no follow up question by the interviewer? Also, isn't it funny he did not want into go into details of why the deadline for norms for emission by thermal plants have been pushed to 2025. What's contributing the greatest is not being talked about and people are unnecessarily dragging in non issues ! Anyone can pluck low hanging fruits and kick a silent group of people.

Crackers busting does contribute to poor air qualitty for that day or tow , even parali burning is consintent cause and emissions by vehcicles are much more in quantity compare to emission by thermal plansts . and where does the money for improving emission for thermal plants come . There is cost to everthing . and complaining about these issues does not help , let everyone electric cars and ban parali burning .

Dr Arvind is clearly a good doctor whose training & experience is in diagnosing & treating sick people with lung issues. He is also correct in stating that bad air quality is an important factor for poor lung health. But clearly he is out of his element when he starts talking of contributing causes of air pollution. EG, he brushes aside parali burning as a cause - this leads to 24 hrs x 45 days of dense smoke over a huge area in North India every year but attacks Diwali crackers, which are for 4 to 4 hrs for ONE DAY in a year as a major cause! Then he slams vehicular pollution & coal burning thermal power plants but ignores all the other factors which also contribute to bad air quality. He should have read the IIT Kanpur survey which listed at least 24 factors. And he dismisses masks & air purifiers etc as solutions! I repeat, he is a good doctor but totally clueless when it comes to causes & remedies for air pollution. We will never have air as pure as a mountain village in Delhi but we HAVE to minimise pollution without stopping all activities & use protective measures such as masks, air purifiers, lifestyle changes etc.

Dr. A K explains nicely but Weird... the doc highlights and blames cracker burning, a 1 night event but says paraali burning in Punjab has minimal contribution in Delhi's pollution WHEN PARAALI BURNING HAPPENS OVER A MONTH!!! So agree with the doc that we, the people must protest and let the next election be based on clean air. The 2016 IIT Kanpur's report on Delhi's Air Pollution and Green House Gases states a control option under its under Action Plan (Pg 16/xvi) - "Managing crop residue burning in Haryana, Punjab and other local biomass burning, Potential alternatives: energy production, Biogas generation, commercial feedstock for cattle, composting, conversion in biochemicle, Raw material for industry". Other pointers are emissions from vehicles, small industries, waste handling, construction/demolition, municipal solid waste.. FireCrackers spike the pollution but only for 2-3 days and then it fades off on its own. Crackers have anyways reduced during and after covid. Not as many people were left with money to burn. Delhi CM did not increase DTC Buses but gave contract to Cluster buses, increased battery rickshaws (A COMPLETE MESS)...why eco-friendly mini buses not ply on internal roads ..why??

Oh wow, although it was a great podcast but I can’t agree with the statement that parali is a seasonal thing and Diwali crackers are not. I live in Delhi and it has become like a gas chamber right now. Diwali crackers burn only for a few hours but parali burning continues for weeks together. I think it has more to do with the fact that we all see Diwali crackers burning in front of us and most of the people have not experienced parali burning which is way too worse.

Dr Sahab said Parali burningbis not a big contributer as total ratio is very less in total but cracker burning on a single day in a year on Diwali should be banned... I am not sure what is his agenda here but his points are not in sync at least for me... I am not Saying he is wrong in general, but he is making a lot of sense but not in total. Also he says coal power plants are the biggest cause but no coal power plant even close to Dehli or NCR so how can that be biggest reason for high pollution in NCR..

Meat industry is the biggest polluters in the world and fabrics is the third largest pollutant in the world. Apart from pollution, slaughtering animals outside designated area is a sign of primitive tribal/feudal society. There is (should be) NO ROOM for such practices in any civilised society!!!...🤔
