Anima Integration Explained | How to Integrate the Anima
This video is all about the Anima in the Jungian psychological model and how to integrate it into the conscious personality.
Carl Jung posited that the Anima is the inner woman in every man, just as the Animus is the inner man in every woman.
I see the Anima more as the feminine side in every person, as I have had experiences with Anima disintegration.
In the video, I talk a bit about the Anima in relation to the Shadow and the unconscious mind as when the Anima is in the subconscious, it gains its own autonomy and exerts its influence over the conscious self.
There is also information about Anima repression and Anima possession as well as the most common expression of these dynamics.

Thank you! It’s a really common thing because we have a collective schism between the Anima and Animus on the macrocosmic level. All people have some level of issue with this. This Anima/Animus dynamic is also at the root of many social issues.

YES! I love classic Jungian observations, and I always felt that he assumed that a man task was only to integrate the anima and the woman task was only to integrate the animus, and in my own experience in life I had to desintegrate my animus so I can expand my self with deeper understanding of the masculine energy in myself. Keep sharing your wonderful insights!

I kinda find integration of Anima/Animus a struggle nowadays. Especially with this societal construct such as “toxic masculinity”, which threatens both genders. Being a man, I find it hard to be expressive or emotional around fellow men as well as being too manly around women for I might be viewed as a misogynist. It really concerns me that it often affects on how I relate to people. Btw, I love your videos! I find that you are also fond of Jung’s work! thank you for sharing your ideas and tips ☺️

The issue with Anima and Animus integration is a very deep and intense collective issue that's bound to trigger lots of people's individual and macrocosmic traumas. We're all so deeply mired in this leviathan of a schism between the collective Anima and Animus. So, the reason why everyone gets very touchy about these topics is because they project the images of the Anima and Animus onto individuals. BUT also, the dynamics of disintegrated Anima and Animus really play out on the individual level and have an impact on people's perspectives and behaviors. So, there is both a projection of the split between Anima and Animus AND there is a genuine enactment of this relationship both individually and collectively. We really take on grapple with these archetypes of Anima and Animus. It's a reflection of the axiom "As within, so without". Now, the pedestaled Anima is a common social phenomenon that play out in many women's personalities where they feel insecure and try to project the image of being "above it all". But it will also be projected onto women who are not embodying this Shadow Anima. The oppressive Animus who is suppressive of female autonomy and power is also a common social phenomenon that plays out in many men's personalities. But it will also be projected onto men who are not embodying the Shadow Animus. So, issues with the Anima and Animus do genuinely cause this phenomenon that is culturally referred to as "toxic masculinity" where certain Anima possessed men are trying to drag the pedestalled woman off of her pedestal by marginalizing women who they perceive to be in a position of power over them. Now in reality, real women don't have the power that the Anima has and are not genuinely up on a pedestal. That's the illusion the Anima spins through projection of itself onto those women. So, those who are dealing with Anima issues (men and women) end up just trying to take women down a peg who (depending on the era and cultural leanings) are already down many pegs because of this collective projection. This is a core reason why female oppression has been so widespread throughout history. Society has been trying to banish the Anima (the pedestalled woman) and take her power away through marginalization. This, of course, creates more of the same in the same way that it does in the psyche. That said, in the past century we've made a lot of progress towards integrating this Anima figure. But there's still a lot of unresolved collective Anima issues that impact both men and women. It also feeds into Animus issues in men and women as well. Now, it makes sense that there is a colloquial phrase for this phenomenon. But it would be more accurate to just call it Anima possession because that which is referred to as "toxic masculinity" is simply a symptom of Anima possession. So, the issue with the term "toxic masculinity" is more that it's looked at at a surface level as a character failing and a sign of "evil". But in reality it is a symptom of having some deeper issues with the Anima. Also, it can easily get projected onto people who are genuinely not operating from the space of Shadow Anima. So, there can be a maligning of innocent intentions as well.

@@TheDiamondNet wow this is a brilliant interpretation and explanation on the matter. You are really awesome!! I agree that, it is apparent from generation to generation that projection of the split between Anima and Animus has given birth to the problems of gender oppression and prejudices. One of the qualities that are usually projected is the quality of “power” or “superiority”, that are initially observed as masculine. As you said, this led people to repress Anima and to oppress women for representing them. But people have made a huge progress from such a terrible age of humanity. Nowadays, we can see also women in highest regard, same as men. Today, there are gender and development programs that is highly encouraged by the government. However, I find it sad that some people found the way to integrate these specific archetypes only by means of empowerment and authorization. This somewhat causes both genders to rely success on the qualities of “power” and “superiority”. This social construct masculinize today’s women and oftentimes put today’s men into a hot seat by displaying such natural traits. In this manner, society prohibits the preservation of our natural instincts. That is to say, the Animus in man and Anima in woman. And I believe that through combining/harmonizing their natural relationship can the society reach the peak of its excellence as well.

Absolutely. Often times, the Anima will attract someone to people who are like the pedestalled woman who will be enacting the behaviors of the Anima. Or if a person has an integrated relationship with the Anima, they will likely be attracted to people who reflect the healthy Anima. So, relationships will tend to mirror the relationship to the Anima (and Animus as well).

Great explanation... you structure the presentation of info so well, Emerald, thank you! I do wish Jung had elaborated more on the anima dynamic for women, and the animus in general. He mostly concentrated on men when it came to feminine/masculine, except for the “animus possession” of the overly-logical, aggressive woman. I see anima dynamics show up very clearly in the romantic idea of the female muse, which comes to inspire man’s creativity. Of course, I believe women also can have male/masculine muses that inspire her, too, but that is much less discussed.

Hi Briana! Thank you! I do agree that I found the explanation poignant but also incongruous with the details of what happens when a woman has issues with the feminine side. I know that for me, muses usually come up as older male mentor figures that possess some quality that I want to develop in myself. So, I would love to find more information on that dynamic. I just finish journaling about anima and feminine-masculinity pendulum that feminine is stronger in today society. Masculinity is stronger in physically but lacks socially by design in the universe so life is social right now. Who is weak? Both parties so much needed in life. I really enjoyed the clarity and depth of your presentation. I would have loved to hear more about how to break our of a pattern of creating the pedestal woman in such a way that it blocks establishing sexually intimate relationships with women I am attracted to. I have always found it easy to make friends with women, but struggle to find intimate sexual reciprocity. I then get into unrequited love dynamics which I tend to deal with through poetic expression which again tends to create 'the muse as a pedestal woman. I'm currently doing what you suggest in terms of getting out my head (over-thinking) and connected to my body through mindfulness breathing.

I followed your tips on integrating the anima by doing an Active Imagination dialogue with an anima figure who appeared in a recent dream. In this dream the dream ego is shattered to witness ‘his‘ anima making out with his Shadow. After the dialogue I realized the main reason why the male ego is inclined to push the anima into the Shadow: fear of intimacy. This brought to mind the Madonna/Whore duality which I now feel is better understood as the Pedestal Woman/pornographic sex object duality. The projections involved in both sides of this duality disempower both the ego and the anima. To my surprise, I have already written on this issue in a poem I wrote several years ago: Losing Aphrodite: ‘The price of kissing is your life.’ -Rumi Here she is now In the darkness, At the threshold of a dream, The beautiful stranger, Kissing you on the mouth, Her tongue wet and warm. So how do you surrender completely To this tenderly passionate invitation? Seized by fear, You have absolutely no idea. And so the long kiss That fills your hungry mouth Takes you back To the mother's breast you once refused. Here you seek To merge with desire itself, And end up in a nest Of writhing and entangled bodies. Here you enter her from behind, Her lovely face lost In somebody else. And this is where you come Undone. And when you rise at last From your orgy of sleep And from the nest Now empty and bereft, You find that you have woken From the dream Of loving a beautiful stranger Who kissed you in the dark.

Grwat and very clear explanationas always! I had a few aha moments during this video as I am very interested in the question of what femininity or the anima actually is. I too have had struggles with my own anima as a woman which I have been trying to integrate in last few months. Society doesn't seem to get any further than describing women as beautiful, soft and emotional. The only more in depth view of this I have found is in the yin/yang, anima/animus dichotomy. I would love a video on animus integration too! I guess the animus on average isn't as much pushed away to the shadow as the anima but I'm sure there are problems with the animus aswell right?

There hasn't been a strong need for feminine intervention until recently, but if you look at most of the thought leaders of today (Daniel Smachtenberger, Jordan Hall, Jamie Wheal, Iain McGilchrist, etc), they are clearly operating from more of a "yin" perspective or energy. Maybe a little too yin for my tastes but I don't deny that femininity (true femininity) has been marginalized for too long and society's suffering because of it. In the end I believe finesse will trump force.

Poetic interpretation of Aluna and Araya (integration of the anima/animus)- You’re so pretty, the way you are, By the light of the moon, you’re a twinkle little star... How much pain, have we gone thru together? Are you older than me, have you known this pain forever? Was your father so cruel, did he push you away? Have you ever had a lover, did you want him to stay? When I was a child, we’re you a child too? I remember an angel, was I dreaming of you? Did you know my mother well, did you feel incessant pain? Do you remember my dear father, were you aware of his rage? Where are you Aluna? Araya speaks of the sun; Does the pale moonlight, bring us together as one? Do you know what you want, can you tell me the same? Do you need to say the words, is it love that you crave? If I fall for an angel, will you speak with her tongue? Or do you see through my eyes, will you know that she’s the one? Are you both of us then, are you reflected in her smile? Do you both fear rejection, of a man in denial? If I take you in my arms, if I love you like a child? Can we face this fear together, let our hearts run wild? You can be the goddess, if I have the kindness of a king, The door is always open, and I’ll always let you in...

Jung’s ideas are more like practices than just something to know and being upgraded by knowing it. The central thing in Jung’s principles is self awareness. All of his other ideas (individuation, shadow integration, inner work...etc) are all methods you can use for your self awareness to be more accurate, effective and helpful. Jung is more about practicing the principles and less about understanding the principles. There should be a small period of time in our days for these practices.

Oh wow, I never really understood how this worked, but that makes a lot of sense. I'm a gay man and I've always felt comfortable in my gender role, and I can see my conflict with the Anima is present but different. There's no sexual attraction involved at all, but I've definitely struggled with resentment, especially back when I was a teenager. There was always this feeling of being judged by women that I projected onto a moral pedestal mixed with a feeling that women had power over most social circles and could easily "gang up" on me unfairly if I deviated from their shared conceptions. Now generally speaking I've gotten over this just by spending enough time socializing with women and doing shadow work on my own misconceptions, and I don't have any trouble relating to women now, but admittedly I still feel more openly comfortable in groups composed entirely of men or groups with a mixed population than I do in a situation where either I'm the only man or there are only a couple of us. I believe there are still some situations where the masculine perspective has thoughtful insights to contribute that mainstream groups of women don't generally share, but I don't feel threatened by that anymore. Nevertheless, I might take some comfort in being able to "retreat" from those groups to be alone or among men from time to time, because there's still a little bit of emotional currency drained by being around people with a different perspective all the time.

Thanks, superb video! Is the term "anima addiction" ever used? Is this the same as "anima possession"? And in which book does Jung write about the anima?

It's incredible that all of this psychology is understood, and yet our public discourse on gender politics and sexism is still so crude, blind, and futile.

Disintegration can result in a pattern of failure or perceived failure, for example. The symptoms and solutions are often subtle and are much broader than how I perceive male or female activities or personalities. The variety of personality associated with man and woman is more complex than what she is describing here. Man and His Symbols can provide you a glimpse of what these ideas entail. Meditation is the beginning of any understanding.

my favorite anima story is ghost in the shell 1995, where the puppet master is the androgynous, godlike anima archetype. the movie demonstrates a total integration process as the plot. i think one of the best ways to integrate the anima is to totally fast food for several days at a time, ie get in touch with death, which is a feminine aspect of the body happening at all times that most people do not acknowledge. the masculine aspect of the body is life, wherein you take in food to create life

Quite interesting topic, especially after some weird dream and an urge to look for something, related to anima. One day ago I somehow wrote something like "I don't like when women rule over me, like I'm losing power" - probably, it is related to those anima issues. Even experience an urge to rebel if something like that happens. At the same time, sometimes, if I see beautiful women I feel like that beauty can turn my mind off. And it's really scary, due to losing of myself. Ironically, but I speak (if speak, if necessary) with not that beautiful women, because that beauty would not trick me into falling in love. I don't know, sometimes this reminded me that I'm some kind of a minor tyrant, that wants to maintain my power and protecting myself from any encroachment. Though, not totalitarian, though fearing to lose power with the waters that may intoxicate me, getting off balance, losing myself. Probably, this may be a perfect example of "overpowering masculinity and fear of losing it" in myself. However, I think I'm onto something, gotta delve deeper, because obviously this thing is inside, not outside, hence safer for me.

As a man who has a some anima issues that need to be worked out. I have found writing to be therapeutic to help me get out those emotions that I tend to bottle up naturally because I am supposed to uphold the image of a strong and rational male. For whatever reason I have a hard time speaking my feminine side. However, through writing I am able to fully get in touch naturally. Reflection through the written word has helped a lot for me. Is this a valid method of integrating the anima?

I suffer from it. What you described in the video applies to me. The way how i desired or rejected women was exactly like this. I don't know who i am today. I was raised by a narcissist and in my family as a men i was not allowed to be emotional because we are traditional and i believed my father actually and kinda sibconsciously supressed everything that was individual about me. Today i am 25 and i find myself extremely estranged from reality and my own life. Whenever i wanted to answer the question of "who i am?" I began to look at outside things like cartoon characters or people and then just saved them like a memory card in my head and then just thought i am this. I am kinda robotic and think due to my OCD all the time and so i cannot do emotions well.

excellent video. So females also have an anima and males have an animus?

I was still wondering how t9 integrate the anima even after watching this video, but I realise it’s in the way I interact with women; I now realise how defensive I become in any disagreement with a female and how this effectively provokes them into playing the part of the hostile aggressor. In reflecting on how I react to any kind of dispute/rejection of my intentions, it seems obvious that a negative animus was projected onto me as a child/adolescent and that I was imprinted with a negative response mechanism; the negative animus of the dominant female influence in my life creating a negative projection of all women within my subconscious (which logically presents as the negative anima within myself?). The resolution of this problem seems to be in consciously witnessing the external relationships I have with the feminine; the internal process of forgiveness/acceptance being necessary in terms of my childhood patterning (and acknowledging the negative animus/anima as a psychological construct within my own mind; which is no longer attributed to any actual person, despite that person still giving a face and form to the replication of their influence). Also, in having done some recent research, it is said that being more secure in one’s self (masculine or feminine) the negative aspects of the anima/animus are given much less impetus for self-sabotage; looking for a partner to fix the problem is the most common mistake we make as conscious individuals.

Can you recommend a book that would help me to understand the feminine principle? I have been reading feminist literature for many years and yet still get myself into self-defeating relationships with 'pedestal women''. I now realize I have a complex ambivalent and contradictory view of women. Through feminism I tend to see women as victims of sexism, male violence, etc, while on the other hand I associate women (not all, but the ones I'm attracted to) as sexually powerful (as suggested by Camille Paglia). I look forward to seeing whether your suggested activities work for me.

This explains my personal issues perfectly. It’s as if you reached into mind and exposed how I’ve thought about women and myself since I was a teen. The sense that women look at me and sense whether I’m worthy of their romantic affections. My fear that women sense and are repulsed by any show of weakness. It’s scary how “spot on” this analysis is. I recommend your channel to all my friends. I’ve found each concept explained in understandable manner. Keep it up.

wow this is so profound. I literally felt like my ex girlfriend put me in a kind of cage. And I projected this pedestalled women image onto my ex girlfriend. After that I rejected her and I guess I rejected the anima as well. But doing active imagination I saw my anima again.

I wonder if there is a relationship between wanting and trying to always GET from the world vs. valuing giving to the world and the disempowerment of the anima to create a false overly masculine persona.
