I believe watching the series subbed makes your reactions more unique, as most other channels watch it dubbed. While the overall story remains relatively faithful, the dub still inserts a ton of extra lines that weren't in the original, including probably some subtle references to DBZ as that one got dubbed first.

Dragon ball is and will always be considered the humble beginnings of shonen. A chinese classic tale of adventure and comedy. You can see the makings of Luffy within the character son Goku.

Ok, this is great. Unlike what I assume is the case for most of your subscribers, I don't watch anime. However, I was a big fan of Dragon Ball back in the day and, after hearing of Toriyama's passing, decided to check if there were any good DB or DBZ reactions on youtube. I skipped a few minutes just to check if this was a worthy video, which usually isn't the case, and you can't imagine my surprise when I saw you were watching it subbed! Went back and watched both episodes in their entirety, and I must say this is great stuff! Definitely earned a sub!

Definitely stick with it in subbed. The Z Dub wasn’t really faithful to the original scripts and changed/added dialogue that would completely alter character personalities and ends up with alot of contradictions which to this day is the reason why the western DB fanbase gets made fun of for being “the fanbase that doesn’t even know what they are watching”. An example of a change even happens in this episode. Goku tells Bulma he is 14 and Bulma kicks him out thinking he is a pervert. We also find out that she is 16. In the Dub, they completely change the dialogue and never mention how old Goku and Bulma are. Something relatively small but you can see how even something like the reveal of their ages got omitted in the dub. Even the dub actors have said that the original dub that everyone in the west seems to love, isn’t faithful to the Japanese and that it should just be viewed as something to watch for NOSTALGIA (this was stated by Chris Sabat on twitter who is the dub voice for Vegeta and basically main director for the DB dubs at Funimation). So yeah, stick with the subbed. You’ll get the true Toriyama experience with that.

As a kid I never got to watch the sub japanese version. I got to watch it on TV latin american spanish dubb and even when it is my fav since de VAs usually dubb Hollywood movies for example: Goku's VA (Mario Castañeda) usually dubbs Bruce Willis Jim Carrey and the rest of the cast as well, for me japanese is still great and I love it.

I don't want to say this in the wrong way, but holy shit Dragon ball is FINALLY getting the recognition it deserves. I remember years back, people would always follow the next big thing in the Dragonball Saga, namely Abridged or Kai or super but no one i swear to christ NO ONE ever thought to check out the original series which is a shame because it more closely resembles toriyama's unique and original style. I mean i looked everywhere in the youtube space and it just did not exist. Now since Akira's passing, everyone is actually trying to honor his legacy by watching the OG dragon ball and im so happy people get to experience this classic chinese tale of comedy, adventure and fantasy.

Speaking as someone who grew up watching the English dub and later discovered the Japanese original, I would avoid the English dubs completely. They change and censor so much. I really hate all the script changes and changes in character motivations. On top of all this there are many mis-translations and poor voice acting and they don't use the insert songs. Most people who like the dub is because of nostalgia. Sub is definitely the way forward. With the manga I've only read the VIz English translation (which is the only one) which is a lot better than the English dubs for the anime but is still far from perfect.

Please keep with the sub , og it's always better (or mostly) I would prefer to see the sub just to feel Toriyama sensei a little closer, I know it doesn't make many sense but that would be my way of doing it... (Also too many people already saw it dubbed so you would mark a difference(?) I must tell you they changed many things from the dialogues in the dub so that would be another no no for me.

Like many said the big issue with the dub is that it isn’t faithful to the original, specifically the Z dub. A lot of the love for it is nostalgia, and if you just want to experience Dragon Ball for what it really is, the sub is much better.

Im french so ofc I clearly didnt watch the dub but since Im a kid I was always say to myself how the hell americans didnt watch dbz with the original soundtrack ,its literally a crime😭 I literally still have all of the ost that we heard during the episodes in my phone to this day I have to admit it 😅, top 1 easily for me,so iconic and they totally change it. And ofc the japanese VA did an unbelievable work but you will see it yourself during your (long) journey

I think with DB especially, it will be great to stay subbed. I will say though that DBZ dubbed is one of the best in anime. So when you get to DBZ, I suggest giving dub a try off screen to see how you feel because I think many fans would be excited to watch your dub reactions. One of the few series where dub is almost as good, if not as good as sub But ultimately if you stay with subs all the way, then that's perfectly great too 😎 Currently going through a subbed rewatch for DragonBall too. feels good 💜

When I watched it I would switch back and forth and watch scenes in Japanese and English. Which isn't really practical for a reaction channel, I guess lol. Personally I kind of liked Bulma's English voice actor. They do "soften" some of the stuff they say in the dub though. (Also the audio quality is way better in the dub although I think there is supposedly a version with better audio in Japanese)

Two episodes in, you can see how strong the presence of Dragon Ball is felt throughout shonen, Goku serves as a very interesting archetype of the male shonen protagonist: A somewhat dumb and naive but incredibly strong outsider with little knowledge of social clues whose ostracization has made him act in ways that most people would find strange or off-putting. Add a different haircolor and you just got half of your anime list set already xD.

Theres a difference, Goku is endearing cause he's a child still here, is basically an alien, raised basically himself outside population, he was just not a random problemátic or loud kid, and the part that never is adressed, he's independent and resolutive, it's Nice the touches like him being clean and tidy Even living on his own in "the wild", it wouod be so easy make him rude or "feral" in a way, but a well mannered and humble kid

People that complain about the high-pitched voices of the protagonist likely haven't watched Dragon Ball because DBZ has the same voice actors, it's the same "high-pitched" voices from Dragon Ball, if it doesn't bother you now it won't bother you with DBZ. In my opinion if you don't Goku's high-pitched voice in DBZ then you don't actually like Dragonball.

for me is so weird to listen other dubs or original, maybe because I grew up with the LATAM (mexican spanish) dub, which in my opinion it brings excellent VA's. The screams and serious situations you can feel the tension in them voice, in japanese i hated it in later chapters

I mean this is subjective, but i grew up with the dub and i can't stand it anymore. The script changes are extremely noticeable after i watched the whole series in japanese. A lot of the characters have completely different personalities, and the censorship is also rampant. It's almost like an entirely different show. The voice actors themselves are good but i really don't like the rest that comes with it.

I completely forgot how raunchy Dragonball was and left my young niece watching it. 😂😂😂 I got an ear full from my mom when I returned, niece enjoyed herself, though!😂😂😂 Re: sub or dub? I think I comes down to personal preference. Golden Boy, Samurai Pizza Cats and Metabots dubs are awesome! Dragonball, Samurai X and Hajime No Ippo works well both ways! DBS for me was only different because I couldn't wait for the dub and got accustomed to the sub. Again, personal preference! You don't need an overcomplicated story. Just have fun and tell your story! You'll find your audience! That's what I learned from Toriyama-sensei's legacy. Him and Charles Schulz.

Definitely keep watching the Dragon Ball franchise in Japanese. The old English dubs from the 90’s and 2000’s have aged poorly. The dubs of Kai, Super and the modern movies are really good though. Much more accurate and better acted.
