I personally think Feels is a bit more refined but their debut album in STGSTV is one helluva debut. I get a very Midsummer Night's Dream feeling from the album, like fairies are reminding me to enjoy myself and not take life too seriously all the time even though it can be scary. Feels is pure bottled nostalgia and catharsis.

@DerpASherpa1175 ай бұрын
The first song I ever heard by them was "My Girls" on a League of Legends twitch stream (shout-out to pobelter for inadvertently introducing me to my now favorite band of all time) probably about 7 or so years ago. As soon as I heard it, I was hooked. It was pop but with a maturity that I'd never heard before. The soundscapes that were created were so layered and melodically complex that I was entranced. While the lyrics were cryptic and somewhat difficult to understand (little did I know this would be a running theme with AnCo with MPP being by far the easiest to understand), I was taken aback at how purposely this was done the more I listened. They used their own voices to add to the layers of beautiful sound, to the point that the lyrics themselves seemed like an afterthought by comparison (they obviously are anything but, of course); their voices themselves were just instruments to be added to the overarching melody. Everything blended so wonderfully that I couldn't help but laugh. I quickly listened to the rest of MPP and moved on to Feels and Strawberry Jam. Feels remains my favorite album by them as it seems to capture youth and bottles innocence in a way I didn't know was possible. It always makes me feel good when I'm feeling down, reminding me to not lose that childlike sense of wonder I once had and to accept that although the halcyon days have passed, I will always have blissful memories of them. After those two, I listened to Sung Tongs, which is essentially a folk album on ketamine. If I were to choose only three albums out of their discography to tell you what the "core" sound of Animal Collective is it would have to be Feels, Strawberry Jam and Sung Tongs. Even though I love Fall Be Kind, STGSTV, Here Comes the Indian and their other more difficult albums, I always come back to those three. Moreover, as I listened to more and more of their discography, I couldn't believe that each album clearly sounded like Animal Collective, yet was sonically unique from anything that had come before. It is a very rare thing indeed when a musical artist can manage to both have a signature sound that makes them instantly recognizable while simultaneously never making a new piece of music that was the same as before. They have remained my favorite band/musical act of all time. There is no one else like them and I am truly grateful that they exist.

I don’t listen to them all the time but I think animal collective is one of the most innovative original groups of all time they’re like what Pink Floyd was in the 70s but in a totally different way. This was actually the video that got me into Animal Collective. I wanted to check them out, so I watched this video and I ended liking how Fireworks sounded. So, I listened to Strawberry Jam the next morning, and eventually, I was listening to all of their records. Today, they are my favorite band of all time and I own many of their CDs, vinyl, a shirt, and I saw them live on their recent tour. If it were not for this video, I wouldn't have found my heroes. Update: No longer my favorite band of all time (Thanks Phish), my #2 however. Went to go see Avey Tare live on his solo tour and met him after the show. He signed 3 of my Animal Collective CDs: Spirit, Danse Manatee and Ark (HCTI).

My first Animal Collective song was Peacebone, and I've love virtually everything since. MPP came out when I was in college and I found the album's accessibility a great lift off point to show them what I found to be their more interesting work. It was around this time, maybe a little earlier, that I discovered Battles as well with my favorite song Atlas, but I suppose that's not as relevant for this video.

I go back to My Girls frequently. I love the bands entire discography, but that song has a profound effect on me. Its a bible of sorts, the guide to life as an adult. Lyrically, it grounds me in what's truly important, repetitiously beating it into my soul with heartfelt passionate sentiments. They do this in an way that doesn't conform to traditional pop song structure, which always reminds me to be an individual that doesn't conform with the beliefs of a certain ethnocentric group, but with the values of me personally. The song has saved my life, several times. I turn to it whenever the world gets too big or I get overwhelmed and lose track of what's truly important. The song celebrates what's essential with unique and experimental jubilation, something that can be put into a bit of everything we as humans do, and doing so makes me a better person. It, to me, is the greatest song of all time.

Maybe he misspoke, it's said to have influenced chillwave, which I think never really took off in the odd way vaporwave did. Stuff like Atlas sound which Panda is on. It's said the album just sorta influenced people to use samplers more. Vaporwave more of a silly beat making, piss take of chillwave.

yeah I think Ariel Pink (who Animal Collective essentially discovered and released his early home recorded albums on their label) is far far far more responsible for chillwave and vapourwave (which are very different but related genres). Notoriously James Murphy once wore a tshirt saying 'it's all Ariel Pink's fault' This album has a bit of that and sits alongside it but not part of it. Ariel Pink was one of the all time greats. Shame about him these days. Don't use social media. It rots your brain. I now know what Van Morrison fans feel like.
@jorgie14155 жыл бұрын
Listen to their songs entirely (rather than skipping a track if you’re not impressed by the first 20 seconds). Many AC songs only start their catchy “accessible” hooks halfway through. Then, after you hear how awesome the second half of the song is, the first half grows on you and becomes great build up to the killer second act! (And Golden Gal is a pretty catchy post-Meriweather tune)
@DerpASherpa1175 ай бұрын
"Graze" and "What Would I Want Sky?" from Fall Be Kind and "The Purple Bottle" from Feels are all excellent examples of this delay in the melody, whereas "Turn Into Something", "Brother Sport" and "Chocolate Girl" are all examples of the "accessible" melody being found immediately and the rest of the song is hitting the ground running.

ive known about animal collective since i was about 14 but only just now 5 years later am i seeing this video, when i finally broke through the barrier of their less conventional works and can officially call myself a big fan. favorite song of theirs has to be alvin row- stgstv as a whole has to be my favorite album, especially with the brand new remastered edition of it that makes some of the more grating sounds on the album a little more bearable. not only is the album beautiful but as a 19 year old on the precipice of becoming a “real” adult with the kind of crushing reality of being in that in-between stage between childhood and the real world combined with me only recently fully beginning to work on tackling past traumas and current mental illness makes the lyrical content throughout a lot of the album- especially in alvin row -resonate with me super hard. guess it makes sense since most of the band wouldve been around the age group im in now back when the album was first recorded.

Thanks for this video 🙌🙌 and thankfully you considered make the own for the project panda bear/Sonic boom👏👏

I got into Animal Collective listening to a bootleg recording of their 2006 concert in Finland, weirdly enough. I wasn't interested in downloading music at the time and getting hold of Animal Collective CDs in my small town was so hard, so I just listened over and over to the tracks people shared on myspace and hype machine. Their live shows are so good, and so little time spent on audience banter, that if you can get a good recording you might as well be listening to an album.

There was a pitchfork review line that always stuck with me, something like "to appreciate animal collective, you have to prefer a degree of madness in the music you listen to." I love so many of their records, but I'm a "Feels" guy till I die.

I came home from work one day and my high school daughter was listening to No More Runnin. Kinda liked it. She said it was Animal Collective. Fall Be Kind was just out so I listened to that. Then Person Pitch. Then Did You See The Words. Then every other piece of music. But it's not their studio work, it's their concerts that make them one of the best bands of all time!

Amazing video! I only got into AnCo some months back when a friend got me to listen to Strawberry Jam, from there I listened to Merriweather then Spirit they've gone and I absolutely adore those albums. Feels and Sung Tongs aren't quite as good but they have some of my favourite songs like The Purple Bottle and Leaf House. You've earned a sub, would love to hear anything else you've got to say about this band. (By the way, playing Alvin Row like that with little to no warning was NOT okay hahaha, my little heart can't take hearing that song so nonchalantly) P.S. This video came out on my 18th birthday! The first song I listened to as an official adult was Alvin Row. Fitting, huh?

Because people keep associating this band with MPP, its been 15 years and people still only want to talk about that album. Do people only enjoy one season? Or one type of food? Why don’t they talk about danse manatee? Or here comes the indian? Crack box? What about the side projects like terrestrial tones or jane? There’s so much to this band and their artistry that has gone largely unnoticed by the people that talk about this band and are missing the larger picture.

thank you for making this video, i love animal collective, they're my favourite band! i started with "sung tongs" but i didn't understand it very well, then "merryweather post pavillion" arrived and i loved it. i came back listening to "sung tongs" and i loved it too, it's my favourite AC album now. but i love everything of them, each album is different but still completely AC. i have all the studio albums and more. i also saw them live several times, and even if it's difficult to re-create the studio magic during their concerts, i love seeing them nonetheless, it's a great experience (seeing them at primavera sound presenting "merryweather" was great, but also when they played "painting with" was very fun). can't wait for a new album with the full band!

Person Pitch _is_ excellent....but, Avey's "Down There" record is far far better, imo. In fact, I might like it as much as MWPP. It perfectly did what MWPP did....combined super weird experimentation with super catchy hooks. Down There is musically one of the most inspiring records I've ever heard. No one writes songs like this....that are THAT good.

I think it was early 2005 when I first discovered Animal Collective. I was browsing Amazon.com for panda ear muffs and amazon recommendations said, "Hey, have you heard of Panda Bear? Check out Young Prayer." I listened to the little snippets and ended up getting it. Then I did some research and saw that he was part of a band called Animal Collective and that their latest release was Sung Tongs. I remember after a handful of times listening to Sung Tongs, especially Leaf House and Who Could Win a Rabbit, thinking I was listening to something really, really different and like nothing I had heard before. And Visiting Friends, which I didn't like at first, I remember having a moment while listening to it that I heard something new in the song that I found so fascinating and then I would look forward to that song on future listens. That's been my experience with almost every album since. Listening feels like a discovery, and I find that experience to be a real treat.
