That’s basically what happens when companies try to piggyback off another’s success. They focus on only the flashy stuff but not everything else. Has anyone here played Magician's Quest: Mysterious Times? That's like, "Animal Crossing but at Hogwarts." Which is, objectively amazing. I wish I knew about it when it first came out, since Animal Crossing: Wild World and Harry Potter were two of my favorite things as a kid and I would've loved that game. There's a whole series of games in Japan, but they only ever localized one of them here. Anyway: look it up online. Magician's Quest: Mysterious Times is fetching crazy high numbers in the resale market because Animal Crossing and Harry Potter are two very popular franchises, so "Animal Crossing at Hogwarts" is undeniably a compelling pitch. My point being that, an original game which is in the same style as Animal Crossing but that has a unique pitch (maybe bringing in more elements of fantasy or science fiction-- elf villagers and magic spells, or alien villagers and visiting small planets like you visit islands, etc) would definitely be a popular game. I hope some real devs who are fans of Animal Crossing and Magician's Quest get in on the pitch for "Animal Crossing but with more genre fiction elements" because that pitch definitely has potential.

"no unadulterated shovelware / pure slop games" There's no such thing as 'shovelware' - they're just cheap indie games. Nintendo is booting games off the store for not being fun - fun is in the eye of the beholder, no? Many of these games are made from less than $50,000, you want Nintendo booting those off too?! Shovelware isn't actually a problem on the Switch. They don't show up in the featured, and they don't bother the players.
