That was a mechanic of earlier games. Never the core mechanic. Animal crossing has always been an expirement of the control aspects of god-games toned down and mixed with life sims. Throughout the series you've taken larger and larger roles in designing and interacting with the community around you. It's somewhere between The Sims, Neopets and a myriad of homage and influence from previous Nintendo titles.

Eh, Tom Nook provides zero-interest home loans for island property. He is evidence that the system _can_ work if the people running it aren't dispassionate pricks; that said, Animal Crossing is a product of said system so of _course_ it will show someone at the top allowing you to succeed. I can't tell which is more insidious: Tom Nook's methods or the game showing us that "the system works."

I think the isolation from living on an island has given some of the villagers an.. epiphany of sorts. Some of them even realize just how empty it all is by mentioning that they "played single-player hide-and-seek and won"... only to admit under their breath that they are really bored. Of course my favorite has to be what the Lazy villagers can say: "There's a weird rumor goin' around... Some folks? They're saying none of this is real. None of it. They say the island is just a game. And everything we say? Or do? It's just to amuse somebody else! And...I dunno. I kinda maybe believe it? SO many things would make sense, ya know? Have ya ever thought fruit grows way too fast? And ain't it weird that trees all have three kinds of wood? And have ya ever noticed there's pretty music everywhere? It's great, but it's weird... And does Tom Nook make ANY kind of sense to you?! "Yeah, I'll buy your seashells so you can give me back my own money to pay off a house I'm selling to you!" I mean... WHAT? It's all so obvious! Our lives are fake! We all shoulda saw it a loooong time ago! A long old time ago... (Around this point your character actually starts panicking and sweating.) A huh huh huh! I'm joking! It's a joke! Nobody said that! You oughta see the look on your face!" (Part way through the last sentence your character naturally acts confused & it just ends.)

I don't think you represent Nook business Model correctly. 1. You start out in debt, but from Nooks reaction, its something you should have known beforehand. He gives you a very generous and fast way out of it as well. 2. You go into debt to buy a house, but you're not obligated to do so. Also, you get something for it. The house is yours. You don't have a payback plan as well and can keep from paying off your debt forever. 3. Bells are the national currency, and can get rich pretty fast on your island. Nook miles is a currency tied to the island, but not only do you get them for doing whatever, you can exchange them for bells ata pretty reasonable rate. Though the process is tedious. 4. Yes, Nook himself pays you pretty measly when you work for him, but you barely do and you're not really forced to do it in any way.
