Ideal for classroom use with young learners and/or ESOL/EFL/ESL students.
This version is ideal for classroom use and is aimed at young learners studying for exams like GCSE English literature. It keeps the focus on the story rather than the Russian Revolution parallels, which can be introduced once the central narrative is established.
I write graded reading & listening materials for English language learners & reluctant readers. My titles include: The Picture of Dorian Gray (Penguin) Washington Square (OUP) & Gulliver's Travels - Further Voyages (OUP) More details here. esolepacks.com...
My approach to adapting this text has been to focus establishing the central narrative. Animal Farm is often considered an ‘easy’ text but this is misleading. Despite its short length it can be challenging for new readers. One difficulty is that allegorical links to events in the Russian Revolution can confuse readers not familiar early 20th century history.
While staying close to the original text have also made some technical adjustments to increase readability. These include reducing the length of the text by about about half and shortening paragraphs and sentences. I have also replacing reported speech with dialogue where this is effective.
Orwell wanted to create an uncluttered, easily readable story. I have tried to reduce the number of words/phrases/references that will be unfamiliar to contemporary young readers. I have also reducing the use of passive voice and authorial intervention in the narration.
