Danielle Johnson Sheep don’t need to be sheared. “Sheep are sheared in the spring, just before they would naturally shed their winter coats. Because shearing too late would mean a loss of wool, most sheep are sheared while it is still too cold. An estimated one million sheep die every year of exposure after premature shearing.” However, some sheep don’t shed their wool, but is the cruelty that surrounds the industry of sheep-shearing justified? “People have selectively bred our modern sheep with the thick heavy coats. About 30% of all wool used worldwide comes from Australia, where the most commonly raised sheep is the Merino. Merinos have been bred to have wrinkly skin to produce more wool. Their coats are so thick that some die of heat exhaustion during hot months. Unlike wild sheep, Merinos cannot shed their fleece. When domesticated sheep can not shed their fleece themselves, their wool will grow longer and longer while flies lay eggs in the moist folds of their skin. The hatched maggots can eat the sheep alive. To prevent this from happening, ranchers will perform an operation called mulesing. Without anesthesia large strips of flesh are cut off the backs of lambs and around their tails.” Shearing is NOT humane.

Danielle Johnson Don’t buy dairy at all. The dairy industry is horrific. Male baby cows are taken from their mothers and killed upon birth. They never get a chance to suckle their child. These same dairy cows are milked four times daily for five years, forcibly impregnated every few months to do the their milk production, and killed at 5 years of age when their milk production drops slightly, making them not worth the time or money. These cows live 20 years otherwise. The cycle continues, as these dairy cows have children- female calves, that follow this same horrendous march. Chickens suffer a similarly horrific fate. Male baby chicks, upon birth, are ground up alive in a macerater or locked in a gas chamber to die. Female baby chickens suffer the same life as their mother- horrible, cramped, unsanitary conditions where they sometimes go insane and eat it each other or eat their own poop, conditions where they don’t ever get to see the sun or chase insects like they would naturally. They are given laced feed, and grow until they can’t support their own body weight. They are killed later for their meat. These are the horrible, horrible conditions these poor chickens live in, just for the eggs and poultry we eat. We don’t have to do this. We can help them. Why don’t we? You can help them- and there are many already doing so. I’m one of them, and I only regret not doing it sooner. If you find it in you to, please go vegan. Take small steps and one day, you’ll be free. Your future self, the animals and the world will thank-you. The best part of it all is that it’s unnecessary. We don’t have to keep hurting and exploiting these animals for their meat or milk. We all could stop this, and do our part. Is all this suffering worth the fleeting taste and convenience? With a little effort, you could replace cow milk with plant-based soy, almond, pea or oat milk. You could buy vegan eggs. Please do so. Change. Almost every vegan was once a meat-eater, but this suffering is something that we know is cruel, and so we chose a more compassionate. We all have the kindness and love within us to save these animals. It will be helping not only these innocent animals, but the world.

Another contributory factor to this issue is the conservative ideology. Most conservatives are fine with animal abuse and mistreatment. If you notice, most latter-day poachers and animal hunters (for fun) are conservatives. There is this one study that confirms the high tolerance of conservatives for animal cruelty (which I would love to link here, but KZbin always deletes it). In fact, as an ex-conservative (hardcore, near far-right) I used to think the same way. I was very religious (Christian) and thought that "animals don't have spirit, so why care for them? Pet and animal lovers are crazy." But then, in 2020, everything started to change. My mom adopted a pregnant cat which I refused to accept at first, but eventually, I learned to love her. She's so sweet, chill, and fierce (haha, perfect for my personality). Then for the next years, I was "awakened" with the world's wickedness towards animals and felt what pet and animal lovers feel. Our cats change our perspective. It's like a 360° shift in my life. Now I know the feeling of being mocked and ignored for raising concerns regarding animal rights and welfare. I also now know the feeling of grieving over a pet that died- a feeling that I really didn't understand before. Maybe, there are things in life that you don't need to experience for you to learn them (i.e. vicarious learning). But, there are also some things that you cannot fully understand, unless you experience it yourself.

I have a serious genuine question that hopefully someone with some form of intelligence can answer. So say as a civilization we decide that we'll no longer kill animals for food, What solution would you recommend we use when animal population became overpopulated and out of control?

This is a question that has bothered me as well. I think their breeding would slow down dramatically because we have artificially increased that and without drugging them to bring them into “heat”, using artificial insemination, etc etc, The rates would more manageable. Animals in the wild have much lower birth rates than farm animals because there are natural checks and balances controlling that. We would have to stop forcing genetic changes on them for faster growth and production. Some of the genetically “advanced” meat animals we have now are not sustainable. Meat chickens are designed to grow fast and live very short lives. They aren’t able to carry their own body weight after a few weeks. These types of animals were engineered by humans and aren’t viable and will die off pretty quickly . But heritage type breeds that are healthy are still available and would have to be provided for in some way. They can’t just roam free to be a menace in on highways etc. Farm sanctuaries would have to become established. It will take time for farm animals to revert genetically to more natural expressions of themselves. Domestic animals are different from wild animals and we would have to protect and preserve them. They live in a space between wild and “pet”. A lot of thought and care would have to go into how to sustain them. You can’t just open the barn doors and tell them to go fend for themselves. We can’t even get people to care about cruelty to them now. Are people going to be willing to pay for sanctuaries for them when we stop eating them? We don’t even want to pay for disabled people to live adequately. We are responsible for what has happened to these animals but will we choose to accept that responsibility? Yes we have to stop the cruelty of factory farming, (99% of all farmed animals) and stop eating them. But then what happens to them?

This kid means well but the goals she suggests aren't a meaningful dent in the problem of massive mainstream animal abuse. At mininum caging then slaughering any highly sentient animals for human consumption is a practice that should be banned globally. Cows, pigs and others creatures with cognition similar to our pet dogs and cats should receive similar legal protections.

Rights are a human invention/convention created to protect from abuse. Not so long ago, kids, women, the working class, the poor, the handicapped, the non hetero, and colored people didn't have rights and were considered property of a male "owner". Nowadays no one in their right mind would question those rights. Some countries have even given rights to the environment, to rivers, forest, etc so that they are legally protected from abuse.
