The border collie is also extremely sensitive, and can have their spirit crushed with a hard human. That can also cause behavior issues. They are often misunderstood around other dogs, as they are not interested in them, but more interested in objects (balls, frisbees, sheep, agility, humans). Literally the best canine in the planet!

Absolutely! I was very stern when I first rescued my border collie. Quickly I realized she did not respond and only shut down when I would treat her like other breeds I've experienced. Only when I exrpressed happiness she would light up and do anything I'd ask her to. She completly changed me into a more positive person and I'm convinced she was an angel sent down to make me a better person.

Very true, Robin. Building that special relationship with you BC from puppy stage has been an essential ingredient. Of course, no one should ever strike a dog. My border collie, Jess, was an amazing dog, with all of the intelligence, energy, playfulness, and loyalty they’re famous for. She was never a barker, and seemed to like everyone, even strangers. One day, when she was about 7, a workman came to the house to do some odd jobs. Jess immediately positioned herself between the man and me, keeping him about 7 feet away from me. She stood stiff, the hair along her back standing straight up, every muscle tense, while a low guttural growl seemed to fill the room. She had never acted like this. Never growled at anyone. Clearly, she sensed something in this man that I didn’t. I believed her. I told the man that I didn’t need the work done any longer, and told him to leave. For a split second it appeared he might argue or move toward me, but Jess’ growl got even more menacing and the man backed out of the house and went away. I never discovered what the problem was, what kind of trouble he might have brought, but since Jess never again behaved like that (and she lived another 10 years) I still believe she knew he had bad intentions and saved us from harm.

Incredible mind reader. All I have to do is "think" and she understands every thought. Gets me up at 0630 sharp, uses "little girl squeaks". to go out or come in. Barks only used to warn off intruders. Loved to be loved. Took Dixie to obedience training, and she had "sit, stand': "come", "stay", "obstacle course," "sea/saw", "heal", after the first lesson, She simply watched the older border collies :"do their stuff" and when I took her off the leash, she had already mastered the course. I walk the dog once a day, but it feels more like a run or jog, as the dog doesn't like to walk much. At home, she get herself busy chasing and playing hide and seek with our two cats. She is super social and friendly with everybody, people and pets. Bottom line: you can have a BC in an apartment, as it is not the place, the area, but your lifestyle and surroundings that really matter to the animal. IMHO.

I had a border collie I got for free at a feed store as a kid. That dog was so damn smart, hardly anything we 'trained' him to do was really trained, he just learned by himself by us engaging with him. He grew old while I was in college and after a few years of him losing his sight and hearing (he caught on to our hand motions as we talked all his life, so he knew what "come here" in the waving motion meant), we eventually put him down due to cancer complications. One of the saddest days of my life. Such a loyal dog and a perfect breed for families who have at least a few acres to roam. Currently I have a german shepherd, another fantastic breed in the herding group. It's not always about the breed, you got to build that connection with dogs and create that bond.

My border collie was incredible with children. She had a strong protective drive over any child - even ones that didn't belong to the family. She would leave me and go to the child's side even as a infant laying on the ground and never leave them. If they crawled she would patiently walk alongside them keeping a careful eye on them, when they could stand she would literally sit with her head up against their chest letting them lean on her. When they walked they could grab her collar and use her for stability. As the kids got older and ran and played, she'd be out there for hours running and playing with them. She was the perfect dog for children. All of it was just naturally her, I never taught her any of that. I got her as a puppy when I was 12 and she recently just passed away at the age of 11.

The Border Collie is NOT always good around children. Mine wanted to herd them and control their crazy antics (according to HIS outlook). Problem is that mothers don't like it when a Border Collie attempts to dominate their children. Cody was fine with kids when he was a pup. But when he matured, a switch went off and he suddenly DIDN'T like kids. He also didn't like it when someone he didn't know LOOKED DIRECTLY INTO HIS EYES. He took it as a threat and came up into their face with a hard nip. People don't like it, but he interpreted their stare as being a CHALLENGE to him. ---- He was STILL an amazing dog and was my BEST FRIEND. He died on 29 Oct 2019. I miss him SO MUCH>

I like how you explained so many things about the border collie. I didn't know that their herding instinct also had to be trained.

My parents got a border collie mix when I born, we grew up together, and I loved him so much. I remember his little black eye and triangle ears, I hope I can get another one as soon as I can buy a house so it has space to run around and be active.

If this tells you how smart they are. My Border Collie loathes his paws being touched, so of I decided to teach him paw, so he could get used to his paws being touched for grooming. It's starts with grabbing his paw and saying paw yada yada yada, but then he gets what I want him to do and he SITS on both of his front paws, and every time I would ask for them it continued he knew what I was asking, and he just refused to do it.

Ignore these so-called "facts" and do your own research if you want to know more about BCs. At least 2 of these points are just plain wrong.

YourFriendlyKiller my border collie just walked away with a stranger and didn’t even look back, she also goes crazy every time she sees a stranger and jumps on them, licks them, she loves people too much. She also herds children and sees anything that moves as a sheep

I am, currently, training my second border collie mix. My first, now 12, a lab/husky/border collie, has been off-leash in the yard, and on walks, since he was 7 months. I've had people trying to buy him his whole life. I started at 5k, told one five figures, and he last person to ask was told he couldn't afford him. It was fun, the looks i got. My 9 month, a border collie/austrailian shepherd/hangin tree/blue heeler, is progressing nicely. He's an easy walk, amazing recall, and showing more of his intelligence, daily. While no experience with a pure border collie, I can say that my mixes have been amazing. Intelligent, workable, friendly...amazing dogs.

I have one and it’s a sable colour, they are just so loving. They would never leave your side and are the most loyal dogs anyone could ask for. If anyone gets a dog it has to be a collie.

First dog I remember was a Border Collie, my auntie's dog, and it was the first dog that ever bit me! It was my fault, I decided that I was smarter than she was and was taught a valuable lesson and, it was one that's stuck with me. Later in life, a mate bred Collies as working dogs and they were characters, all individuals and all smarter than me. A good few ended up as search dogs, SARDA, and performed in incidents like Lockerbie to great praise. Collies have that look about them, they eye you up trying to decide how they can use you to their advantage but, what a breed. Brilliant dogs, loyal as hell and just so much fun. What more can you ask? I could do without the bite on my backside though......

My border collie mix is an excellent watch dog! I always know if someone is near the house. She also tried to warn me about a bad boyfriend when she met him for the first time. He tried to kiss me and she snarled and snapped at him to get him away from me (only time she's ever done that), but sadly I didn't pay attention to her opinion of him. He turned out to be very dangerous and scary. Always listen to your BC's instincts about people!! I wish I had. I personally wouldn't recommend these dogs for children, but that might just be because mine is an alpha and likes to correct bad behaviour in other dogs, and would probably do the same with children. Just make sure you get a very waggy and roll-overy BC if you intend to have them around children. Mine is very obedient and eager to please (only me, haha), but she does really have a mind, mood, and thoughts of her own! These can definitely be "one person" dogs. Mine never really warms up to most people she meets, even those she meets multiple times.

The Border Collie DID NOT descend from the Australian Shepard. First you say the BC is an old breed 5th and 1st century BC?? WTF? (which is also wrong and way too early) but then say it descended from the Aussie which AUS was only colonized in 1788. They both evolved independently from each other.

The Collie is a breed of Irish origins, it did not originate within the British Isles but instead has its origins on the island of Ireland, the English word collie derives from the ancient Irish word coileán which ment helper. Its recorded in Irish history that in 600AD Irish monks kept and bred collies, when the Vikings started raiding Ireland in 795AD the monks fled to Scotland along with their collies. Its factually wrong the breed today is called a border collie but instead should be called the Irish collie.

@DV-gx2rh4 жыл бұрын
Everything was correct except they are not a perfect pet if you have children. When you tell your child to do something, the BC think its his job to make them do it and will herd the children. They do this by nipping them
