+Doll Doctor-To be fair, especially over the last decade probably, they have dumbed Bart down so bad, that he even is a caricature of himself and the Bart-centered episodes tend to focus over just how stupid he is. Hur hur, let's all laugh at the idiot. The show completely ignores great episodes such as Bart Gets an F and any subtely (left) with Bart over how he can mischievous and a little dimwitted at times (although it used to be he was nowhere near as dumb as Homer was), he is a sweet boy who sometimes doesn't even like the reputation he has built up that he's a dumb prankster/slackoff. In Bart Gets an F, Bart finally realizes his bad grades are going to cost him. He's going to have to repeat the fourth grade if he doesn't pass the final test of the year. So out of his pride and willing to go far to get what he wants, to prove himself, he does everything he can to do so. And what's so heartbreaking at the end of the episode is that he doesn't pass, all his hard work still has left him with nothing. Sometimes, the price is just too great and it was only after Ms. Krappelapple realized Bart wasn't an idiot after all, and he did everything he could to pass the test, she gave him an extra credit to pass the test. That episode had a lot of subtlety, nuance, and heart and displayed very early on that there was more to Bart than met the eye and Bart isn't a bad kid. People often make that mistake in doing so and the writers have pretty shredded any true character left of everyone in the show where we all left with superficial shells of beloved characters, but if they really cared, they would know Bart is smarter than even he believes and he is a sweet kid, just a tiny bit rough around the edges.

I thought this was the worst Simpsons Christmas episode ever, but then an episode came up where Lisa wants to friggin take the Christmas tree away from the family because it's tree murder and Bart pondering to kill Santa because he didn't get a bike the year before. That show is so dead.
@feraflauna32386 жыл бұрын
+MforMovesets-And Lisa was clearly established a long time ago to be a converted Buddhist. So. . .why would she care at all what the family does for Christmas? In fact, even when this probably was when the show was going south, when Lisa converted to Buddhism and was a massive prick to her family for still celebrating Christmas, Richard Gere gently reminded her that Buddhists can participate in other religion's festivities if they want to. It's about being respectful and so Lisa decided that even though she was a Buddhist, she could still participate in Christmas if she wanted. Even though she was a prick to her family about celebrating Christmas in there, she still realized at the end of the episode she wasn't right in how she approached the situation. That is MILES ahead of. . .whatever that episode is where Lisa throws a hissy fit that her family is chopping down a tree and likens it to murder. To. . .an intimate object. There's being an environmentalist and just being crazy. ..wait till she finds out she using trees for books and paper. . . And if the writers truly cared about this show anymore, they would realize that while Bart is mischievous, he's still a good kid. There was always a line even he wouldn't cross, and he never resorted to even threatening to murder someone. Like, Bart casually suggests he murders Santa because Santa didn't give him a damn bike? Just. . .screw you, Groening and the writers.

A bad subversion is just an inversion. You take the common trope, and turn it into the opposite! A good subversion examines the trope, figures out why it's popular and where its faults lie and when it breaks down, and builds an actual story around exploring that. This takes more effort, so it's unpopular among certain types of writers. Luckily, it's less popular among writers who could do a good subversion well in the first place.

Timothy McLean Gumball is a prime example of subversion done amazingly well
@timmyreobed50436 жыл бұрын
Timothy McLean That type of subversion has a specific title: Deconstruction. Seeing a cliche and dissecting it to see how it could be a horrible thing. This is incredibly easy to mess up, much like subversion in general, which is why we also frequently see reconstructions of these tropes and cliches, to see how one could make them work in more creative and interesting ways. It's like taking apart a scrapyard car and using the parts in conjunction with others to build a much better car.

@voltmcvolt17516 жыл бұрын

@dmas77496 жыл бұрын
Like Timmy Reobed said, that's a deconstruction. A subversion is having it lead your audience to expect a certain trope is going to have it. Inversion is taking the trope and flipping it on its head, like you said. BUT it can be done well also. Take the protective big brother trope, typically they defend a little sibling from anything mean or hurtful directed towards them. Now what would the inversion of that be? Having the little sibling be the protective one. Sounds silly, right? That's where justifications come in; say the older brother isn't very athletic, or very good at standing up for himself, while the little sibling is more brave, takes karate, and isn't terribly young (say, 12). Tropes are not necessarily bad and this extends to all manner of implementation; be it subversion, inversion, double-subversion (makes you think it's not going to happen then plays it straight) or just straight-up playing it...straight.

There was one gag to this episode that I found funny: When the Simpsons are driving their new car, moments before it's destroyed, they begin happily singing 'Here Comes Santa Claus.' Mid- song, Homer suddenly switches to 'Jingle Bells,' while still keeping the melody to the former song. I thought that was funny and clever, and in character for Homer. @ 15:21- 15:25, I must respectfully disagree. I'd say the worst episodes are the more recent (As in, over the course of the last 10- 12 years or so) Lisa- centered episodes. Explanation: While Lisa has always been portrayed as a political activist and whatnot, over the course of the series, she gradually but quite noticecably morphed from a sweet, wise, and devoted girl who cared about causes but also generally cared about respecting other people's feelings and beliefs, into an increasingly obnoxious, self- righteous, arrogant little brat CONSTANTLY forcing her increasingly- radical views on everyone, and throwing a temper tantrum whenever anyone dares to commit the heinous crime of disagreeing with her on any issue. In spite of this, the show in its recent episodes centering around Lisa portrays her as HEROIC for doing this! Wow, what a great role model!

I got an idea on how to do this episode right. Have the same issue happen. Bart accidentally burns down the tree and uses the burglar lie and the town donates their money, but instead of Bart coming clean and being punished for it, he uses the town's money to make some kind of big Christmas Show and during the finale of the show, Bart comes clean and reveals this show was possible due to the town's money. The people and the family at first, don't know what to make of this, and Bart is about to sulk off the stage, thinking that the town is mad at him, but then the town starts cheering happily and his family comes up to the stage and hugs him. "You aren't mad that I lied...?" Bart says. "Oh, we were...furious in fact...but then we remembered this wonderful show you put on for all of us. How could anyone stay mad after you not only fixed your mistake, but made this Christmas the best Springfield will ever have?" Marge replies. Bart smiles and hugs his family and it ends with all of Springfield gathered around a fire and singing Christmas Carols.

Oh, and regarding the "Disney owns Fox" thing, there's another angle to this that a lot of people seem to be missing (Or maybe it's just because I live in the Florida area and see the issue I'm about to discuss firsthand): I think a big part of the reason for many of Disney's mergers is due to their theme park rivalry with Universal and seeking to squeeze as much money out of Universal as possible. Explanation: As most of you are probably aware, Disney's Orlando (Technically Kissimmee, but close enough) theme park Disneyworld's undisputed #1 competitor is the Universal Orlando Resort. One of the more popular and well- liked areas of the Universal Resort among fans is Marvel Superhero Island, located in their Islands of Adventure park. So, Disney bought out Marvel so that, while they can't get Universal to shut down Marvel Superhero Island (Indeed, Universal wouldn't WANT to, considering how popular of an attraction area it is), they can get Universal to pay them considerable royalties fees for it. Then, in the late 2000's, Universal Orlando Resort opened another incredibly popular attraction: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. In response to this, Disney bought the rights to all the music from the Harry Potter films. So, now, for Universal to be able to play the beloved musical tones from the films that fans would expect them to in the Harry Potter areas, they must pay MORE royalties fees to Disney. Now, Disney buying Fox is likely meant to squeeze even more royalties money out of Universal Orlando, due to it having the Simpsons Ride and an entire segment of its Universal Studios park themed around Springfield.

Carl Bloke the whole Disney vs. Universal thing is dumb. When universal opened in Florida it was a flop, of the 6 opening day attractions only two of them worked. When island of adventure opened Disney was ready for it to be a success and had plans to announce a whole villain area in magic kingdom as well as an expansion of animal kingdom, both would include top tier thrill rides, but IoA flopped as well at first. Universal got lucky with Harry Potter and, to this day, is the only thing universal has going for them, which has since essential forced Disney to open the world of padora, galaxy edge and marvel land to combat it. Universal still makes a fuck ton more in the movie business (as NBCUniversal is a larger company then Disney)

It's like people are afraid of tropes. They think tropes are going to ruin their work; make it generic or something, so they have to try and subvert it as much as possible (despite many of these subversions actually being tropes in and of themselves). But Tropes, even Cliches if used wisely and sparingly, are still important tools needed for any story. Don't make the story about the subversion, use the trope to enhance the story and subvert when it makes sense to do so.

And the score of 7.5 on IMDB's audience score indicates an average movie... even with the hundred thousand people who only signed up to post their one 10/10 after the score had lingered at 6.9 or lower for several weeks. Looks like about between one-quarter (that's 25%) to one-HALF the audience didn't like the "The Last Jedi" depending on which site you go to. Compare that to "The Force Awakens", which I felt was an ok Star Wars film even if it was basically a repeat of "A New Hope" with a ludicrously huge Death Star... which got an RT audience score of 88%.

You know, there actually was an episode of "Hey Arnold" that was the opposite of It's A Wishful Life. During a magic trick performed by Arnold, he makes Helga "disappear", and she sneaks out the back of the disappearing closet when he tries to bring her back, and imagines everyone missing her. Then she has a dream about her really having disappeared, and no one missing her. Her parents don't miss her. Phoebe has a new best friend. And Arnold is rich and famous for making her disappear. But the reason this was a good message was because it reminded Helga not to take the people in her life for granted. In that episode, she'd ignored her dad's birthday, yelled at Phoebe and made fun of Arnold (as usual). When she came to, she ran home, gave her dad a birthday present, and then went back to reappear in Arnold's magic show, giving flowers to Phoebe as a sign that she really did like and appreciate her. She even tried to say something nice to Arnold, but he was mad at her for sneaking off and almost ruining his show, so he cut her off. Point is, THAT's how you do a subversion of something like It's A Wonderful Life. The character actually has to deserve to not be missed.
@adampkalb4 жыл бұрын
You are right! The reason why that all failed in It's a Wishful Life is because Timmy did not deserve to not be missed, and the intended moral of the story to do good deeds because they are the right thing to do, and not to expect a reward out of them came across the wrong way by having everyone Timmy tried to help treat his efforts like they were the *wrong* thing to do! I get it now! November 28, 2019, 12:44pm

I think The Suite Life on Deck also subverted It's a Wonderful Life in the same way that Hey Arnold did. Everyone's lives are better without London and she ends up dying alone, but she was selfish and greedy and had to learn to care for the people around her.

18:07 "Say you're a new upstart company and you've released your first animated film. Well all Disney needs to do is air their movie on the same weekend as yours, throw all of its advertising dollars at it from all of these mediums, and crush it." You mean like they did back in the 90's by re-releasing "The Lion King" on the "Swan Princess's" opening weekend? "Lion King" had already been out of theaters for months when they brought it back; "Swan Princess" was no threat to Disney. The "Swan Princess's" director refused to concede to Disney when they wanted to make a Swan Lake movie of their own and told him to stop his version. He wouldn't so Eisner made sure it bombed.

Most of these subversions have _better_ ways they could've been subverted.. Even the TTG episode (as much as I hate admitting it). 1. "Miracle on Evergreen Terrace" could've still had much of the plot unchanged, but instead of robbing them for all they're worth simply take their "charity" back. That would make sense. Springfield is fickle, anyways, and the family could have still reached that conclusion that "atleast they've got each other." 2. "It's a Wishful Life" could've had it so that _almost_ everybody's life was worse off without him, so long as there was _one_ person that Timmy couldn't stand to see suffer, even for the sake of the rest of the world, and it was clear that s/he was worse off without him (personally; I'd suggest the Fairy God Parents). Suggestions include (but are not limited to) _anybody_ that Timmy had gone out of his way to help with a problem he didn't solve. Another alternative would be to show the characters generally seeming better off _at first glance,_ or showing them seeming better off, while the world _itself_ was crap. So long as it provided anything but the fear of nonexistence to drive Timmy to recant. 3. "Town and Out.." Actually I've got nothing for this one. 4. "Arnold Betrays Iggy" could've had Iggy realize that it was _entirely_ not Arnold's fault, but reveal that he doesn't _care_ that it isn't, revealing that he may not be an all that great person. It could've made some of Arnold's friends rally behind him when Iggy went too far. It could've _actually_ made it Arnold's fault, partially justifying his attempts to make amends. It could've done a _lot_ of things, 5. "Staring at The Future" could've taught the idea of Carpe Diam. Literally the exact same idea -- only 90% less stupid.. And yes -- I am almost certain that what it's trying to say is _not_ to live in the moment, but that's just as stupid.

What you said about being made to long for the cliche brings to mind my main complaint about Kingsman: The Secret Service. The hero “saves the day” several minutes after a cell phone signal has started turning people into murderous mindless barbarians, and we know from previous scenes that those people are completely capable of using more than just their fists. There’s no way that hundreds of millions of people weren’t killed in those few minutes, including several countries' militaries, yet the hero acts nothing but triumphant afterward. And more than once when I’ve brought this up, people have praised it for subverting the cliche of a weapon of mass destruction being stopped at the last second.

Do you feel that these "subversive" episodes are creators reading a "Deconstruction 101" book and completely missing the philosophical underpinnings of the Deconstructionist experiment? Which aren't so much to be subversive for the sake of it, but to take an existing work, break it apart, and then put it back together in a way that lays bare the internal contradictions and exposes the tropes so that you become opening to analyzing the work from different angles? They just see the part about taking a piece apart and then flipping it around and go, "Yeah, I'm smart. I can do that. It's different from how things normally go. This can only end well."
@feraflauna32386 жыл бұрын
+Prince Aligorna-Let's take a look at a movie like Memento (which is really good until the end for me, but that's another story. . .). It has an unconventional plot structure/pacing: the beginning is actually the end and vice versa. . .but it's actually coherent and well thought out. The pacing is strange but you get used to it eventually to where it's not really strange at all. It's just different. And it's not subversive just for the sake of being subversive, the odd structure is just a different way to tell a unique story. And it works, because Christopher Nolan is very meticulous and usually plans things out incredibly well. Now, let's look at every movie that has tried to rip off Memento in a cheap way and comes out awful, because they don't understand what made that movie work in the first place. For that matter, look at all those movies that shamelessly ape Dark Knight's "darkness" just for the sake of being dark without understanding, or caring what made that movie so good in the first place, and the darkness just for being dark really has robbed the joy out of things. Even look at how The Last Jedi thought it was so clever at "subverting" Star Wars and. . . well. . .look at how that turned out. So, deconstructing something just for the sake of it is not cute. It's not clever. And it's funny. It's just a pain. When you deconstruct something ie. take the building apart, you still have to put it back together in some way. You can't just leave lying on the floor in pieces like it mostly winds up turning out with these writers. I do find it amusing that The Simpsons, after beating their own story concepts to death for the last 14-21 years, thought it was so clever for taking apart a Christmas story. However, the episode is so mean and so spiteful. . .it is plain rancid.

Pelcogo I also particularly like Daria, since she’s not much of a girly girl *or* a tomboy, and instead is just kind of... Daria, I guess. I myself am hoping to get into the animation industry someday, and I’m planning to make my own show about a young girl with Asperger’s Syndrome. She does have traits of both a girly girl and a tomboy, but I generally don’t focus on such trivia, and instead just try to write her as a good character. Her main passion in life is music, and she aspires to become a professional musician someday, which I personally see as a rather gender-neutral interest, since music is quite popular with men and women alike (even if it’s mostly men writing film scores). She also plays the bassoon, which is an instrument mostly played by men, but some have argued it doesn’t necessarily make her a tomboy, since she’s blowing into the instrument. (...makes sense to me.) Of course, that’s not her entire character I say I’m trying to develop, but I just wanted to bring up what I feel is relevant to this particular topic. Also, there’s another thing I want to bring up. You might be wondering, does my character want to marry when she’s older? Well, yes, but it’s not her main goal in life. She doesn’t need a man to be happy in life, but that certainly doesn’t mean she doesn’t *want* a man. It really infuriates me how so many writers think “not needing a man” automatically means “avoiding men at all costs” - do they not know what “need” means?

WCW subverted the "good guys always win" cliche by having the heels constantly cheat to win and get away with it, gloating and laughing and beating up unconscious faces every single week. It ended up being far more stale and predictable than the good guys winning ever was and, among other things, led to the organization's downfall. Maleficent subverted the classic fairy tale by making the villainess a tragic victim of circumstances. In the process, it ran roughshod over a much better story and fell over itself trying to convince us that the title character was good, with characters literally shouting it out loud, and ruined its own message of "nobody is all bad" by making the good king into a snarling all-bad villain. Stanley's Cup subverted the "underdogs win the big game" cliche by making a bunch of little kids play hockey against professional players who brutally injure them, with a cancer-stricken kid watching the game dying. It was mean-spirited even by South Park standards and is regarded as one of the show's worst episodes. Stories like this boldly tear down the walls of convention without giving any thought as to why those walls were built in the first place. And some of those walls are load-bearing. “Look, that's why there's rules, understand? So that you think before you break 'em.” -Lu-Tze, "Thief of Time" You know what would be a much better subversion of the classic Christmas story? Have people discover that they're better off not celebrating Christmas. No more crowds. No more pressure. No more materialism. No more Christmas songs we're all sick of. No more letting the obsession with one day of the year completely ruing the other 364 days. Just curling up at home with a mug of cocoa and good book, and finding that they're enjoying this time of year for a change.

TB Tabby ... But that's not even a subversion of a Christmas story. Christmas stories are usually NOT about all of that and more about being with family and the people you love, which is why this episode trying to subvert it by making everyone miserable is so bad. Because it doesn't offer an alternative all you have is people being angry, usually a subversion has a alternative solution or at least something that would realistically happen (though at a that point whether the subversion is good or bad is heavily dependent upon the writing).Your ending would be a alternative solution to a story where the main character is tired of other people and doesn't want to spend time with others on Christmas; that's because any other way spending time with those you love on Christmas even if not celebrating, is technically a Christmas story.

Well, just staying home and doing nothing is no different than what most computer geeks do anyway. How about subverting the trope by having the family miraculously discover that they're celebrating Jesus' birth on the wrong day and that it's actually a pagan solstice celebration adopted by the early Catholic Church to appeal to pagan worshippers. And that the Christmas tree and Yule Log are also based entirely on pagan religion, AND if you rearrange the letters of SANTA you get SATAN. Then they become so horrified they flee outside only to find the Christmas celebrations worldwide have opened the portal to Hell and the Apocalypse has begun. XD

+TB Tabby-I've said for a long time that there technically are no bad ideas (well, most of the time, but the rule still applies as a whole), it's a matter of what you do with it and even the most tired and shop worn concept can be new and fresh again if you do something different and special with it, give it your own twist. Changing something for the sake of being "subversive" or "different" just leads to bad writing because the writers just expect to be applauded for doing something "unique" (it's really not and it's not cute either) without any putting any kind of thought into it other than to be subversive for subversive sake. It also comes out as incredibly mean and off-putting when that happens, especially because for the sake of being subversive, the characters are.. . out of character and are often very mean and spiteful. I haven't watched Stanley's Cup in a long time, and I likely was left pretty nauseated after the end of the episode over just how mean it was, for absolutely no reason either, so I get why fans don't like it. And usually, the episodes that are trying to be subversive just to be smug about it are rightfully called out by fans for doing so because it's not good writing. It doesn't lead to good episodes and often, doesn't even have a solid story structure to build on because they're trying to just be "subversive." At least think it through before you do it at all. Or don't do it at all.

I was waiting for this since the beginning of the month! If you want to watch a great Simpsons Christmas special, simply view "Marge Be Not Proud"; it is as heart-warming as it is hilarious, and it shows a side of Bart that new episodes seem to simply ignore.

I think "Foster's goes to Europe" from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends is an example of an episode from a different show that tried to be subversive for no real reason. It was trying to subvert the perils of preparing to leave for a flight by having it end unhappily. I don't think they had a reason for it other than that it wanted to be different from the typical road trip story. "But why?" You may ask. So do I.

(grumpily) Because they wanted to surprise us by turning Madam Foster into a devious thief. I mean, I can believe a sweet old lady like her having a wild irresponsible side, which she displayed in this episode and at the end of Better Off Ed, but this twist of having her steal the tickets consequence-free still came out of nowhere. The one thing that angers me about this episode is that the family got unjustly blamed for Bart's selfish crime in spite of just learning about it minutes earlier, so the town ends up hating all of them instead of just him. Fuck Bart and fuck that stupid town. Oh, also I love you playing the music from the Diddy Kong Racing snow level.
