This is true with many auteurs. Probably not on the same level that John K needs, but people forget that audiences don't fall in love with the creator's true vision; they fall in love with the compromised, executive-meddled final product. Despite popular opinion, executive meddling CAN be a good thing. For example, when Star Trek: TNG was in production, Counselor Troi was going to be a hermaphrodite with four breasts. People, especially artists, can have VERY "creative" ideas when left to their own devices.

For someone who prides himself as a professional artist, John K has gotten really sloppy with his work. His refusal to learn from other people's criticisms means he is hindering himself from being better at what he does, despite his own critiques of other people's works. If professional artistry is a life long journey, then John has trapped himself in a pit of his own arrogance, not moving forward at all.

So yeah, take that John
@gothicMCRgirl5 жыл бұрын
Joyful Leader Yup. There’s a reason Disney films are remembered so fondly. As a child, we may not get every single symbolism or meanings behind a story, but we do get the gist of what the story is about and enjoy it all the same. And then, when you’re older and know better, you look at the film again and appreciate all the subtly and details that were thrown in. You appreciate that the creators put so much thought and care into the movie, and that they didn’t treat you like an idiot and talk down to you. That’ the power of art in general, it can impact you and move you in different ways at different stages of life. And unfortunately that’s something John K will never understand. He doesn’t put himself into anyone’s shoes and perspectives, he just watches the world go by using his own limited view of the world. He refuses to grow up as an artist. Guy is stuck in the 90s and refuses to come out.

Adam Minke Like Enter said, weird faces themselves don’t automatically make a situation funny. They’re more of a spice or enhancer for that scenario. If you want to see a modern example of this on the internet that actually works, I recommend checking out SMG4’s videos. While he does use a lot of random humor and exaggerated faces (using GMOD), there’s actual timing to the randomness, and the expressions accentuate how the characters react to the chaos around them.

Seeing as John K. doesn’t like “complex stories” animation or “script driven cartoons.” The plot for “cans without labels” should of gone like this: Georges liquor buys tons and tons of cans without labels for his two nephews to have for lunch, since George Liquor is a cheap bastard. He tells the boys that one of the cans might be beef stew which draws the attention of their cat, which George refuses to feed, since the cat is not allowed to eat people food. Once he opens one of the cans, his nephews are horrified to fine that the can has a human face in it. George tries to convince his nephews into eating the face, but even he’s disgusted by the face. Mortified, he pushes the can with the face aside and tells them that he’ll save it for later. One of his nephews asks “why don’t they give it to the cat”, but George refuses to give the cat any kind of human food, especially the disgusting kind. He opens another can, and it reveals that it contains loads of eyeballs. Once again, they refuse to eat it, but this time they all say that their “allergic to eyeballs”, so they toss it aside and open another can. This time it contains a homunculus, that talks like Woody Allen and looked like a naked disproportionate Jerry Lewis. Annoyed by the creature, George flicks it out the window, where the cat jumps after it, assuming that it tries to eat it. Frustrated, George liquor goes insane, he opens can after can to see if one of them at least contains beef stew but to only be disgusted by what what’s inside. Until they come down to one last can, they’re hesitant to open it since they know that it might contain something gross. George Liquor then decides to bite his pride and just order the boys some pizza, and just toss out all the cans outside. Feeling defeated he takes his nephews out for pizza. Meanwhile outside the cat and the homunculus enjoy eating all the tossed out cans, especially the last one since it contains beef stew.

I feel the facial expression thing comes from his rule of never drawing the same face twice taken to the extreme. He knows that's a famous rule of his, so he really emphasized it. That would be my guess
@gothicMCRgirl5 жыл бұрын
I mean, it’s not a bad rule, to be honest. It lends itself to a lot of creative expressions. The reason why TV animation insist on having strict and simple character models is because it takes a LONG time to animate complicated characters, especially if they have diverse facial expressions. John K. obviously didn’t have a problem in going the extra mile and animating those different expressions, but that’s normally hell for animators to do, and that was probably one of the reasons his works were always late. These rules exist in the industry for a reason, but you know, when you’re a narcissistic asshole, who gives a fuck about the rest of the team.

I agree. While I do love it when cartoons have over-the-top facial expressions, I find it best when these faces are done when something's actually happening. I love the new animation direction with SpongeBob, but there are times when the characters make bizarre faces or do bizarre things while nothing happens, padding out the runtime. (Looking at you, Laughing Scene from Krabby Patty Creature Feature & SpongeBob's Sign Holding Scene from Grandmum's the Word)

Hear me out, how's THIS for a better plot for Cans without Labels: When George Liquor realizes that the can has a face, rather than being all "EAT IT!" he freaks out and takes the cans back to get a refund. When he comes back to the table, he says that they gave him new shiny cans for free in exchange. When he begins to open them again, he either gets a butt or a face. Much to his annoyance. So, he and the boys go down to the can shop named 'CANS WITHOUT LABELS' where he talks to the man he spoke to before. He tells them that all sales and exchanges are final and immediately dismisses them. So, deciding that enough is enough. The three of them decide to sneak in and get their money back. Shenanigans, a guard baboon (callback to Ren and Stimpy), and even a cameo of the horse character as the guy who removes the labels are all they get as every plan fails miserably and leaves them kicked out of the building over and over. When their last effort fails, they meet the manager who decides that if they really need the money, they can cut a deal. And the episode ends with the trio walking away, counting their money joyfully as we find out that they sold their faces for cash. And the three cans are sealed with the words 'The End' appearing on the cans.

So, here's the thing: John K the Artist is actually a half-decent individual. The man even has some solid points - his blog, John K. Stuff, is a solid resource for instruction and inspiration (putting aside his opinions, which should be taken with enough salt to fill a dozen silos), and his points about how executives shouldn't have as much power over animation as they do, how the desire to be "politically correct" to cater to the people screeching "cancel" at anything moderately offensive is going to kill the industry, and how having Disney as your sole point of reference (either by having the House of Mouse being your only inspiration or by flat-out imitating them) is a horrible idea are all solid points that even his detractors have to admit are on-the-nose, his infamous opinions aside. On top of that, John K is responsible in part for how creator-driven the 90's were for animation, leading to the landscape of the 2000's and beyond, while also being the first person (though far from the last) to make Flash animation, which paved the way for web animation as a whole. It is an absolute shame, then, that John K the Artist is the same as John K the person. John K, the man who burns through budgets like you wouldn't believe, who can't meet a deadline to save his fucking life, who is such a fucking nightmare to work with that even before 2018 came around he had burned down nearly every bridge he had built, who is a notorious perfectionist (leading directly to his tendency to burn budgets, burn bridges, and burn the idea of a deadline from his mind), who hates just about anyone who takes inspiration from people other than him or those he himself was inspired by, who hates pretty much all modern animation, and of course who is a statutory rapist (and the only reason this went unknown for so long is because if rape jokes for him were an 11, the rest of his humor and behavior was a solid 10.9), and the man who took 7 years and $136,000 to make effectively 5 minutes of very poor animation that finished what little dregs of his career had survived the absolute deep-sixing of the aforementioned statutory rape (which, in of itself, were the dregs of his career that had survived the absolute shredding that Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon had given it 15 years earlier).
