I've gone years and been through two private tech colleges for 3d animation, not a single one made the distinction between Fk and Ik as clear as this. And it can be boiled down as simply as: When dealing with external force that pushes against a limb, use IK, for the natural motion of limbs, use FK Thank you so much, this has immediately improved this whole process for me. Kind of a huge "ah HAH I SEE" moment

You are the first one that says it correctly.Most people use wrong terminology. Thanks for putting things right. So forward kinematics or fk are intrisinc forces produced by the muscles to the bones by the tendones and sometimes through mebranes fascii.On the other hand inverse kinematics or ik are extrinsic forces or exogen (the oposite is endogen) produce by an external factor,for instance physiotherapist move with his hands a broken arm of a pacient to restore articulation mobility and muscle stifness.

That is a rock solid explanation! Well put! I would add a caveat to the "if you're doing arcs use FK", for arcs that wave the arms from one side of the body to the other, or in a specific pattern, like a sword swing or wand spell, IK might actually be better than FK at making those arcs, because you're trying to get the hand to move in a predictable, non-wobbly, swoosh in world space. At that point the hand is almost following the object and it's the object that is animating so maybe that's how it falls into the IK category? But you're totally right it depends on what you're doing and the animation involved. Anyway, well said all around! Thank you for articulating it in such a thoughtful way! I'll totally point new and old animators to your channel.

I find this highly educational! Being an amateur myself, I never knew the difference between rigs. I have always used an IK for the premade models in Source FilmMaker (I know, silly little software, am I right?) and I never knew that FK could make animating easier. Helps a lot, good sir :)

I can definitely do that! :) The first time I looked at a 3D program I had the exact same reaction, and I was about your age too- I think I was like 14 and I downloaded Blender, opened it, and said "NOPE. CAN'T DO IT." and I didn't open 3D software again until college haha- but I will do my best to help! It's really not as bad as it looks, it just needs to be shown to you in an easy-to-understand manner and you'll be off to a great start!!

Solid video! Great content. I would love to see a video explaining how to make a character drastically move in world space. For example, if a character is turning around 360 multiple times quickly, how do you manage to do that smoothly, while keeping your values under control in the channel box. Do you move the global control? Or key it individually. Also, it would be great to get a more detailed explanation of how to take something that would come from the layout department, with the crude timing and spacing for the animation, and take it into the correct blocking stages.
@SirWade

Great suggestions!! For the first one on crazy rotations and controls, I'm going to probably bring in my friend who works on games to talk about how he handles those 180/360 turns- that's a tough one! Layout to Anim I may be able to make one on my own! I added them to my 2018 list of videos! :) Thank you!!

I've been animation for about six months now, we went over IK and FK in the class I've learned it from, and I'm glad that I go over stuff like this again. I primarily use IK handles since it's faster and usually I just need to adjust the elbow control to fix an animation that doesn't look quite right. However he is completely right about using FK with walk cycles, took me about two hours to do what might have been done in a few minutes with FK. Hoenstly I still prefer IK but this does make me think of using FK more from now on.
@mch43856
@mch43856 3 жыл бұрын
FK is hell tho for legs when doing a walk cycle, IK is much more intuitive especially the hips. I personally preffer ik for arms too especially for actions like swinging a sword where you can parent both hands to the sword and then just animate the sword and let the hands naturally follow it.

hi sir, thankyou for explaining this in one video. i’ve been battling alot with student and animators to get them understand. great video keep goin. My suggestion is just use Gimbal rotation mode to avoid gimbal when animating in FK. (and thats why we also need sub controller sometimes) if there’s no subcontroller on the rig, better to plan our shot from the first.

For me, I've been spoiled by rigs that have matching functions. as in from the click of a button I can go from IK to FK (or vice versa) and the pose the arm was in would stay the same. Because of this, I've started jumping between IK and FK during animations. Some bits I use IK because it's easier to pose the arm, but for quick, snappy movements I jump to FK, even though I still have trouble with it here and there.

When rigging I just use Ik on the legs, and sometimes used ik on the arms but now I don't anymore, but I learned that to fix the issue here in 8:45, when rigging you can have the bones of lower body and upper body separated, so that when you add ik chains to the legs, the hips will move the arms with it even when having the ik chains on the arms

Hey there! I'm seriously considering getting into animation as a career path. I went to school for political science and economics, and unfortunately it took me the full 4 years to realize this just wasn't doing it for me. I'm 26 and concerned about starting over, but this is something I'm quite interested in pursuing. If you were to lay out a plan, putting aside finances, for someone to build from the ground up towards an animation career in the most efficient and productive way possible, what steps would you take and in what order given your experiences? Self teaching, Animation Mentor, a community college for basic overviews, etc. Thanks so much, loving the channel!
@SirWade
@SirWade 6 жыл бұрын
Hey man! First thing: You can totally do it. Those are great questions. If I were to lay out a plan, finances aside... The overarching objective is to learn as much as you can starting as early as you can, at your pace- and to do as many projects as possible in the time you have. So in that- I don't know where you're based, but if you have a community college nearby with classes in 3D Multimedia and Animation, that's probably the first thing you can do, as well as KZbin videos and tutorials to get you competent in the tools and start to develop an idea of what you enjoy doing. I recommend finding the DreamWorks Animation Pipeline video to see what I mean. Community college and self teaching is good for just getting an idea of what you're interested in, but very quickly I would look to Animation Mentor for the real educational piece. That's the base level, but hit me with specifics and I'm happy to keep going!

Thank you for watching :) Yeah I did work full time during the whole thing pretty much- most people either work or have families.. Some people have kids, pets, and multiple jobs! It's crazy!! It IS possible, but it's not necessarily easy. Some people struggle with it and with school or a job, so it's very important to manage your time well and stay disciplined. Like, I really didn't have a life for a year and a half- it was a very focused time for me- work, eat, AM, sleep (a little), repeat.

Thanks a lot for your videos ! They are really interesting and your experience would inspire any animator who would find your channel ! I know that in the industry (Animated movies) Maya is the main software used for animation. I'm willing to be an animator but I only animated on 3DsMax so far (it is the software used in my school). Do you think it is mandatory to be on Maya ? Or that the Industry rather focuses the animation than the software used ? I'm trying to go on Maya anyway but that's a question I keep in my mind. Thanks again for your work, keep going !
@SirWade
@SirWade 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with Blue Tiger here- what you create matters way more than where you create it! That said, it's very attractive to a studio if they don't have to take the time to train you in some software if you're able to learn it before you get there. Sometimes that's not possible with proprietary software like DreamWorks has for animation- but in some departments it's going to be a much bigger deal and the type of software you know will help determine whether you can actually do the work. So it goes both ways. But in your case- there's nothing wrong with animating in 3DsMax if you're good at it, however I do think it's worth your time to learn Maya since it is SO widely used in SO many studios. Disney uses a version of Maya for their movies for example- they would probably rather you know Maya than having to teach it to you. Learn as much as you can whenever you can! To be an animator is to forever be learning! :)

I mean, there is the school to pay and I'm willing to work and save money up to that goal, but then do you think it will be possible to mix work and Animation Mentor ? To know if I have to be more preventive and save more money. Thank you !

It's absolutely doable! It can be a challenge as you get into the later classes but pretty much everyone does it. I had a full time job and other obligations during my time in AM- other people do the same, or have families, or work two jobs, etc. It's very uncommon for someone to ONLY be doing AM.

love all of your videos... im trying to figure out why on some rigs... if you pose a hand in one position then switch it FK/IK it throws the hand, arm whatever into 3d space... what is that?

Hi excellent video. I write you because you may be help me. I animated a character using Fk mode but when I move the torso the nurbs move to the same direction but a little more. causing a separation from the nurbs to the skeleton

Is there a way to do motions like leaning or pushing using FK without the hand sliding around everywhere? Like is there a way to make it stay in place like in IK but still work as an FK arm?

Thanks a lot sir! This video really helped in understanding IK/FK. But when i use switch from FK to IK, my previous poses changes. I wish if you can tell me what's the reason.

You need to match the system you're about to switch to, to the one you're currently using. If you don't match it first, when you change systems, it changes poses

Ik only locks the hand if it’s in world space…if you have it in chest space, it moves like FK.
