Hope you enjoy it, in case you didn't catch it, I am, against my own conscience, going to start a Patreon page, so try not to get too angry at me.

Fun Fact: Ruby's Scythe is a big and (realistically) impractical weapon, so to counter this, Monty made it so she always fired the scythe to propel it forward (he said this is a podcast/interview somewhere. sorry I dont remember where). This is why in the red trailer and her early fight scenes, you'll always hear her scythe firing off on every swing. Knowing this, its really noticable in Volumes 3 and forward when she never fires the scythe except in gun mode, or to somehow fly (cause that made sense) Honestly, alot about Qrow bothers me since his introduction in Volume 3 (especially his weapon), which really makes me wonder how much they knew about him before Monty died. His weapon is a Sword/Pistol/Scythe but he's used its scythe form a grand total of once. Twice, if you count the sword curving at one point in the tyrion fight. It also doesn't make sense when Ruby's scythe was originally designed to be almost exclusively propelled by gunshots. There's also the questions of if Qrow knows his semblance is bad luck, why would he be a teacher at Ruby's old school with alot of people around, including students and teachers, and how Ruby didn't know what his semblance was even though she's trained with him to the point of being complimented by Ozpin in episode 1. On a note more related to characters/fighting styles: A couple game series with well defined fighting styles are BlazBlue and Senran Kagura. With BlazBlue, it's primarily newer characters but fighters like Azrael, and Susanooh always feel like they hit like a truck, , and even Jubei feels like he's a highly experienced warrior who earned the title of "world's strongest." It's hard not to admire how much it feels like Terumi isn't trying when playing against him. Senran Kagura also (while still being a very fanservicey franchise), still manages to have at least three distinct fighting styles per character, and it even feels sometimes the animators understood the characters better than the writers for the cutscenes did. tl;dr: Ruby's scythe was propelled by gunshots in volume 1, alot about Qrow annoys me, and Senran Kagura has good attack animations. Don't judge me

In all honesty. I tried to give the series leeway, because Monty was a genius and it was clear they couldn't be up to part with him starting with volume 4 episode 1, but since the Red Character Short I have felt that the animation was missing something. I loved the new ideas, I loved the creativity, story was about as good as before. My bet was on the choreography. Because I knew the graphics and animation quality itself was not the problem. Seems I was pretty close. I'm not an animator mind you. Just a guy playing lots of video games and watching anime occasionally. Your video was the first video that really broke down and explained to me why every time I saw an animation in RWBY volume 4 (except the fight Tyrion vs Qrow) I was like "this is cool, but..." and felt a sting of disappointment as it went on. I cringed seeing Noras pose to be honest, because it was like "why?". Ruby was way more reliant on semblance for a long time. I screamed in frustration on the inside when I realized they aren't even using any recoil-moves with Ruby, the one that made the Red Trailer so incredibly amazing (on top of the other amazing aspects of course). And whenever a beat was coming up I was really hype in the series, but now in volume 4 the moves often didn't seem to match what I was seeing on screen. I rejoiced each time something came on screen that lined up with the music (the Ren (I think double) backflip towards the end of the fight in vol. 4 episode 1 was a great moment that lined up with the music). But much like some of the humor - the actions just seemed way out of line and not in sync with what you'd expect the flow of the fight to take. I really hope they can learn to do that. I liked the Volume 5 Yang and Weiss character shorts. There were some things that I really found were a step more towards Monty again, towards a more fluid, in-sync and characteristic fighting style of those characters (although the last super-punch in the Yang short was like ... meh... it held the pose too long and then reversed the positions of the 2 opponents in a very illogical way for me). Great to hear someone actually explain some of the details as to why - as much as I wanted to love the fights in Volume 4 - I always felt that disappointment in the back of my head sting deep inside. That un-satisfaction of an almost but not entirely completed fight-sequence that suddenly tapped out of beat.
@DexterNewton32

Also quick question: What would you recommend to someone who is currently studying, working and a lot of other things, but still wants to dip a little bit into animation. I don't have a lot of budget and I'm just looking to get started. So are there any programs you can use, videos one can watch (as well as tutorials for those programs) so one can get started? I know some things about programing, but aside from the general concepts of them - in theoretical form, not practical - I know next to nothing about it. Nor would I be able to create good looking art-assets I think. Although that is up for debate, since painting (which I am bad at) =/= drawing (which I might be good at if I learned more about it) =/= animation.

Yeahp, that Qrow thing bothered me too. I mean he fought Winter before, and I saw him as a heavy sword/scythe user. Heck, he made like an impact move against Winter. I don't mean to deny possibilities, but it just doesn't feel consistent with Qrow. Nonetheless, he could have some drunken style... but nahhh

Well, the Torchwick-neo fights wasn't made by him, like Pyrrha vs Cinder, Ozpin vs Cinder, Mercury/Emerald vs CWFY, ecc. The only ones were 3: Yang/Mercury, Pyrrha/Penny and the Velvet fight( and only because they re-used some animation made from him). And i want to add that every fight in V3 was good, like the ones in V4-5, just, not the same level as Monty( in some things).

this si actually a good tutorial. Maybe I'm gonna look in some more Videos and see if I can incorporate some stuff in my Animation work. A lot of stuff is common Knowledge, once you've worked in Animation for a few years, but it always good to remind oneself about this....often you run into a Routine, always making the same stuff, mistakes start to happen and then you'll make those msitakes voer and over again. Why not go back to Basics sometimes, as every good art or aniamtion is, as compelx as it might get, always funded on solid Basic Knowledge :D

I honestly laughed very hard with the "why Qrow", but, honestly, it' s very good, i mean, we never see qrow fighting, beside Winter, and even in that occasion, he never was serius. Honestly, we can talk ALOT about the fights in vol 4, but the qrow fight and the Yang spar were really good, even compared to the Mounty' s style. I just hope that they' lo learn to frame and pose people, because i can se e the GREAT potential of colossal Fights with Maya( and the designs of the new Grimms are so so cool that i want to see a 1 vs 99 grimm gheists with good momentum... plis)

The points you touched on remind me of a video I watched earlier about fight scenes in anime (the video was about Naruto's fight scenes and it was by Gigguk) I completely agree with you in terms of volume 4 lacking key elements in terms of the fighting, like Gigguk said, every fight should have meaning behind it, random violence is boring which is why the first big fight in volume 4 was so bland

so continuity like the continuity that make roman go to "i can fight two of you without breaking a sweat" to "i can even try to fight back because reasons" or ruby and weiss that make them go from " R: i can beat the shit outta shit ton of beowolfs and only get one hit that did next to nothing, W: i can beat a giant armor at the prize of one punch because my stupidity" to "they are like 8 retarded enemies and i fail an atack we should run", or the same continuity that keep saying to us that the grimm are a danger to humanity, but then they say "they are no challenge on their on, but they have the number on their side" but then you see the fucking chapter 12 of volume 2 and see team CVFY annihilate all the grimms in the matter of seconds and i was like "well shit if those are second year, a season huntsmen sure can annihilate an entire army of those things", and you are asking why qrow try to kick tyrian? just because we didnt see him kick winter? also if i remember correctly volumen 1 and 2 also have pointless battles, so why is a problem now? if this seems like i didnt enjoy the video you are wrong brother, i like the information, even more because im in progress to make my own animation, and your videos are been helpful to say the least that aside the fight between kick-man and punch-man look awesome you should make the entire fight, i want to know if punch-men kick kick-men P.S. i came late to your video poses where you say that the way nora is holding her hammer is horrible and i can see why, but this isnt new, just check the first apperence of raven and tell me that you dont see anything wrong in the way raven holds her katana (when she draw the katana), i dont keep the track of every error on rwby but monty is not free of error, neither the run animation where good, but that never was good to begin with

Thank you for contributing to the conversation about this, it was my goal the whole time to teach and get people asking questions. If it ever seemed like I praised Monty as the shining perfect example of all things animation, I apologize. It was a constant precaution in my mind making these videos not to emphasize Monty as the best example of good action animation. Good fight scenes are good fight scenes, the concepts apply no matter what medium it occurs in, Monty was good at what he did and after all he's responsible RWBY's existence, but projects of that size were rarely ever the product of a single person, so to place the blame of RWBY's shift in quality on a single factor is short sighted and un-informed. RWBY can be good as long as the team behind it takes the time to make it good.

Just one question for you dear Cake sir: Do you think that RWBY's animation will get better? I don't mean on Monty's level (may his soul rest in peace) but just on "good enough" level. Although I think I already know the answer...
@CakeStation
@CakeStation 7 жыл бұрын
It's definitely not impossible, what could be difficult though is getting Kerry and RWBY's lead animator to make the decision to improve what we had, instead of trying to slowly phase out action in favor of story. Long story short, I have low expectations and little confidence in the future of RWBY.
@ryujin8754
@ryujin8754 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I expected that answer. But one more question: "I have low expectations and little confidence in the future of RWBY." In terms of animation (fights to be exact) AND the story or just animation?
@CakeStation
@CakeStation 7 жыл бұрын
In the animation, fighting and non-fighting. If I didn't enjoy the story at least somewhat i'd probably stop watching, but basically nothing was tied up in volume 4 so it still leaves me anticipating volume 5.
@ryujin8754
@ryujin8754 7 жыл бұрын
So that's what you're thinking... Well, I may not be a expert in terms of animation but I think that non-fighting animation looks nice, of course there are some problems (and there's quite a few of them) but I enjoy those parts of RWBY. As for the story... it depends on how much of improvement the writers will make in Volume 5 if any and there's a lot that I would change but I probably won't drop it since I don't like leaving things half-way trough. Unless it's total crap *Ehem* SAO *Ehem*

I'm sure that you're lumping this in with "motivation", but I think that "stakes" should be given special consideration, as I always found it to be Monty's greatest weakness. The man was a once-in-a-generation talent for creating highly stylized violence, but his fights always felt like they existed in a vacuum: meant more for showcasing how cool the fighters were than for accomplishing the fighters' goals. I've often pointed out how jarring it felt to me when Neo was about to deliver a coup de grace on Yang; I said to myself "Wait a minute, are these fights supposed to have CONSEQUENCES now?"

I see where the confusion is. I meant for the scene, Less of a "If a character learns how to walk, don't let him walk" more like a "This character needs to fight a sea dragon, give him the ability to move through air and jump 2 football fields length and then never give him that strength again." I hope this helps.

Cake Are you saying characters gaining powers that aren't set up in the story just because the plot demands it aka asspulls are a good thing ?
@CakeStation
@CakeStation 6 жыл бұрын
No the opposite, "asspulls" are a bad thing.

Cake But you just said if a character needs something give him the power to do it and then never mention it again
@CakeStation

I'm sorry if this wasn't clear from the beginning, but the example I made was meant to portray the "asspull ability" as a bad thing. In the video, I advocate for continuity in a characters abilities. I'm saying that giving a character an ability not before seen and then never seen again is a cheap writing tactic and shouldn't be encouraged. In a few cases in Volume 4 and 5 this kind of thing happens, like when sun can basically fly and when ruby can teleport when her power is supposed to be speed. When I say "don't let the plot influence what the characters can and can't do", I should have said "Don't let the context of the scene influence what the characters can and can't do." Like sun jumping ridiculous distances from rock to rock and maneuvering through the air in spite of gravity and when Qrow fights Tyrian he's not exhibiting his total skill with his scythe, but only fighting to make Tyrian look good.

Did you forget to set your audio to mono or something when doing this video? The audio sounds like you're talking at a distance and behind me.

I use 7.1 surround headphones, so whenever audio isn't set to mono, it can have an effect depending on how audio is played through the speakers.

Bittersweet news, I'm spending extra time making the next animation analysis to make it the best it possibly can be, but it's unfortunately the last one in the series.

Well, thats good, and bad :/ I really liked your analysis, so let me throw this ideia here... The analysis don't need to be about RWBY. It can be about anything you want to (when you want and if you want, of course) :) Keep the good job man.

@@CakeStation thanks. 1. Creatures; in this case, the Verandertiers (from tier verander, German for "changed beast"), are creatures native to the world of Remnant, being direct and indirect descendants of the planet's original inhabitants (who occupied the planet before the Gods remade it as they please). Like the Grimm, they are known to be a threat to to humanity. But unlike the Grimm, which do so for the sake of it and live to do so, Verandertiers attack out of a sense of self preservation, defending territory and young, or otherwise "misbehaving", being neither good nor evil. their unique status as lifeforms not made by the Gods and the unstable, chaotic, and always changing ecosystem the planet used to have, the Verandertiers are capable of "improvised ontogeny", a mutation like metamorphosis that allows an individual animal or other lifeforms to adapt to a variety of situations and to enable rapid evolution. An animal or person becomes one if they have a "V base" in their genetic makeup that then activates by various causes, usually life threatening ones like allergies, toxins, extreme injuries, etc. The resulting form is usually superior to its original counterpart in at least a few ways. As you can tell, a lot about these guys is biological and natural. This is because I am a HUGE fan of bringing creatures to a context like this, justifying why and how beautiful creatures do the things they do. They're also like this to differentiate them from the demonic Grimm, which to me, the huntsmen would be very used to at this point. So something new like the Verandertiers popping out of the blue should provide a couple of interesting and unique challenges for our heroes and villains. I'll get to the characters sometime later since it's getting late for me. Anything you liked about what you just read? Please reply.

@@praetorianrex5571 Dude, all of that sounded awesome. The way you explained them sounds like you studied a real Verandertier and just wrote down what you saw. It all seems really natural and I can tell you've put a lot of thought into this. Awesome work.

Is it just me or is RWBY filled with boring, meaningless, ugly choreographed fights? Eh? It's like trying to watch a really long james bond fight where there's no brutal deaths, gore, or emotion, only zoomed out more so you can see all the impossible twirling and jumping. I mean it's like watching a dragon ball Z fight where nobody every makes any kind of vocalization and nobody powers up. It's almost exactly like a kill la kill fight except the characters have 0 depth and don't wear basically nothing. Honestly I am pretty ok with the humor in RWBY and the plot is... uhhnggngngng... passable. But action is trash, literally trash. It has NOTHING, all the fight scenes dehumanize the characters and are a string of scenes of them jumping around like spider monkey's waving stupidly huge things at each other. For fucks sakes it's like a one piece fight except ONE PIECE is entirely an emotional roller coaster and doesn't really TRY most of the time to make the actual fights good at all. At least I feel like the characters are badass a lot of the time in one piece but nobody seems like a badass in RWBY... um... ever. Except Qrow, who is, arguably and with little doubt the best character on the show because he feels like a real fucking person sometimes. I mean his fight scenes are STILL pretty bad but they aren't ATROCIOUSLY bad. I can't OVERTLY blame the animators as opposed to the writers because the writers are basically retarded, and it's very hard to improve upon that while animating, but for gods sake if the writers put in "These people fight, this gets said, this person wins" and you just have to animate that... Than those animators on RWBY either give 0 shits about the show or they are just really bad at just about every aspect of scene writing. I have NO clue how this show has such a huge following because in the few scenes and episodes I have took the time to watch the only redeemable aspect about it has been the subtle plot line, and the few human moments I could find for some of the characters.
