Recovered animation cels can also help in identifying a show's true color design. Contemporary releases of most classic Toei shows (Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon) have very inaccurate and inconsistent color grading due to aging / fading film filtering the colors and those being left uncorrected after a rescan, resulting in colored filters and lacking white balancing through all footage. Some might've heard recent discussions regarding how often Sailor Moon seems to have a pink tint all over it, that's because of uncorrected color grading due to aging film. Animation cels can actually give a glimpse of a coloring much closer to how it was originally designed back then. Look up various cels of these shows and compare. Amazing video ofc. This topic has always been very fascinating. And it'd be great if you can share a photo or video gallery of your full cel collection whenever possible.

Plot Twist: This vid was an elaborate way to flex your cel collection. But seriously, I’ve never really thought about animation cels too deeply but I’ve always acknowledged the amount of time and dedication cel animated shows/movies required. That’s why something like Cuphead was such a huge thing when it was announced and then finally released. Was really cool learning about them and seeing the cels themselves. Thanks for all you do 👍.

I was so worried that this video would go over most people's heads, and I'm sure it has for a few, but your comment has made me feel really good about making it! As much as I appreciate and adore animation and the process behind it, I have zero artistic skills when it comes to drawing, painting, or anything involving putting a utensil to paper and creating. All my artistic abilities are in music, and even then, it's quite subpar lol. I'm just happy I got the approval of someone who does animation, considering how little I know about the actual process, yet am willing to talk about it. It's hard to talk about an artistic process when you're simply an observer looking from the outside, as I am with animation, so I did my best lol.

There's something so amazing seeing people show so much love for the original paintings. Great work, wonderful editing
@GOB-TEK5 ай бұрын
You said it yourself - there's something so intriguing about how cels were treated historically. In hindsight it seems like the most obvious thing in the world: of course the literal, physical pieces of these iconic shows and movies featuring the most recognizable characters would be valued by fans! But the animators who worked on them probably didn't have that on their mind. To them, it was largely work, and those recognizable characters were just the most repetitive element of that work. Also, "iconic" is a retrospective term. You can make good artwork, have endless confidence in it, and sense that it's going to be an amazing final product, but whether something becomes culture-defining is largely out of the control of any artist on any level of the process. Between that and how carefully cels need to be stored to be preserved, it makes complete sense that preservation is the exception, not the rule. Still, cel collecting is one of the things that made me start taking preservation of my own art much more seriously. Not that anything I make will ever have such reach, mind - but I could picture my much older self wishing I had saved the early drafts of paintings or animations. Your passion shows in this video, so keep it up!
@NEScRETRO5 ай бұрын
You never know what art may end up becoming culturally significant, even your own, so preservation is incredibly important, even if it's of your own works! A rabbit hole I fell down quite a while ago was that of the artist Henry Darger. His story is so amazing to me, and truly proves that anyone can be an artist, and even further, anyone can be capable of creating art that can move so many people that it becomes culturally significant. The fact that he made such beautiful art for all of his life, only for it to finally be discovered and appreciated only after his death is a bittersweet, yet encouragingly beautiful story, and it really is only known because he took good care of the works that he made! I've considered doing a video on Henry Darger, but honestly, Down the Rabbit Hole's video is pretty much perfect, so I wouldn't have much to add lol.

Thank you for this amazing video! It's so obvious to see your passion for animation come through so genuinely, I love it! I've also been an animation fan for pretty much my whole life and I adore and respect it deeply as an art form. Even though computer animation is amazing and does wonderful things, I will always have a special place in my heart for 2D animation, especially cel animation (my person stance is 2D > 3D, but I'm terribly biased). There's just something about seeing something that an animator put all their blood, sweat and tears into expressed on paper and celluloid. The cels and frames are pieces of moving history. I love the little imperfections and nuances that make a scene imperfectly perfect, because you feel the human touch it was created with. A great example of this I found recently was the "My Mother" song from the Alvin and the Chipmunk movie 'The Chipmunk Adventure'. That scene has gorgeous animation and coloring that just makes your heart melt, and it feels so emotional and human that you want to cry. Although it's kind of sad for me that cels aren't used anymore, I understand why and their presence and influence is still felt in computer animation. Without cels, we wouldn't have digital animation! Again, thank you for making this video and I already intend to watch it many times over in the future and share with friends.

There was a project for an animated feature a while back that intended to sell every single frame as an NFT that got clowned on on social media because well... NFTs, but I actually thought it was an interesting idea... if they got rid of the NFTs part. I think the production of a high-budget, fully cel-animated feature could legitimately be financed by auctioning every single cel/background. Of course, it'd probably be very risky, as people need to truly love the work to be interested in the cels and perhaps require some name recognition to attract collectors, whether it be renowned artists or a popular IP, but it'd be a way bring attention to the importance of every single frame and an opportunity to employ the traditional hand-made approach, which would be otherwise unfeasible these days due to costs/impracticality. Great video! I can't say this is a hobby I plan on dipping my feet into, but it's super interesting to learn about this hobby/community and I absolutely respect the appreciation they have for each of the single frames that make up favourite films/shows as an individual, one-of-a-kind piece of art!

I wish 2D animation & practical effects would make a huge comeback. Such as introvision's matte painted backgrounds. In the 90's it felt like things used to take a ton of pride towards who could find the most creative ways to do things. One of my favorite shows was "X-Men the animated series" It is so well crafted. The story of mutants is just such a universally relatable subject. Media back then found ways to abstractly teach me life lessons, touched on difficult situations, found intelligent ways to tell stories. Even when I watched it all grown up it really felt like the story is so well crafted and executed that anyone is able to relate to it in someway or another. It's stuff like that that we are so deeply lacking nowadays. So much so that literal kid's cartoons from the 90's told deeper and more mature stories than most media nowadays. I'm just gonna list some shows or movies that I enjoyed growing up. Thundercats, He-man, Captain Planet (Pretty much anything created by Don Bluth or Written by Roald Dahl) The Brave little toaster, James and the giant peach, The never ending story, Rocko's modern life, The secret of the Nimh, Street Sharks, spider man, G.I. Joe's, The Fantastic 4, black cauldron, Little Nemo and the adventures of Slumberland, Beetle juice, Rock-a-doodle, Spawn, Batman, Batman beyond, toxic crusaders, Matilda, The BFG, Ren and stimpy, courage the cowardly dog, magic school bus, Dexter's laboratory, pinky and the brain, I am weasel, IR Baboon, Ah! Real monster's, goosebumps, are you afraid of the dark, pee wee's playhouse, she-ra warrior princess, cow & chicken, gargoyle's, power rangers, TMNT, the Indian in the cupboard, Addams family, toy soldier's, honey I shrunk the kid's, wild thornberries, hey Arnold, angry beaver's, Flintstones, the Jetsons, Kablam. There's many more but I won't list them all. Seeing how things are nowadays, i feel very lucky that i got to grow up in the 90's. Back then I never could have guessed that things would have changed the ways they did. I really miss the Vibe of that Era. I really hope we find a way to reconnect with it because the world seems like it really needs it right now. I mean just look at the esthetics then compared to now? Things have somehow become so bland, bleek, and minimalistic that it doesn't even make since. Most Old house's/building's/unique shop's are gone. There were Interesting oddities, drive in movies, indoor fun zones, arcade's, magazines that came with demo disc's so you could try out game's, blockbuster/Hollywood video, McDonald's had N64's, you could preview music before buying it, kid's toy's had unmatched quality and there was such a vast array of unique toys/action figures, Roller Rink's, Garbage pale kid's card's Those were the days.

Really loved seeing your collection! So sad seeing so many of these old animation cels with vinegar syndrome, though. Like you said, lot of animation companies didn't realize how valuable these would be and either didn't take care of them (or dumped them outright) and that's a real tragedy. :( I know there's been a lot of rumors about Gainax dumping a lot of their Evangelion cels, which is why there's so few of them these days, but I don't think anyone's ever verified this. I will say that there are a couple of ways to better validate whether or not a cel is authentic (even though as you said it's never 100%): > Punch Holes > Line fading that's appropriate for the age of the cel (especially around yellow-painted areas) and the studio (Toei cels tend to have a lot more fading) > Comes with original douga, genga, and/or background Some folks in the community are even able to identify whether or not a particular animator worked on a cel by the way they write the frame number and/or circle key cels (which is wild to me -- I'm definitely not at that level). Thanks for sharing this video -- it's a great source I'll be sharing with other newbie collectors when they join the hobby. :)

I do keep them in a portfolio, everything acid-free, in a cabinet, out of the sun. 29:51 no, Fullmetal Alchemist was made with Digi Paint, 29:57 the same thing with the One Piece anime series, Toei Animation were one of the first studios to adopt digital ink & paint back in 1997 with the third remake of GeGeGe no Kitaro, however, there's a One Piece OVA which came before the anime series and was animated by another studio was cel animated

Was FMA really?? I know Brotherhood certainly was, but I find a lot of sources stating that FMA was cel animated. In regards to One Piece, you're completely right. I have no idea where I confidently found "info" that made me think otherwise, doing another search definitively came up with that answer you just gave.

@@NEScRETRO I'm pretty sure FMA '03 was digitally animated, some of the early Digi Paint anime from that era have a very distinctive look to them, not to mention FMA was Studio Bones' sixth anime TV series and their previous series like Angelic Layer, Wolf's Rain and Scrapped Princess were digitally painted as well, which makes sense since Bones began making anime in the year 2000. I think by 2001 or 2002 is when most anime studios shifted to digital ink & paint, even shows like Pokémon switched from cels to Digi Paint in a very abrupt manner, in Pokémon's case the animation team began experimenting with digital coloring in some shots of the second opening, while the third opening was fully digitally colored, but the show was still being animated with cels until 2002, near the end of the Johto League Arc. Though Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea movie from 2006 was the last major anime movie animated with cels

@pablocasas5906 that's so weird. If you simply Google "was full metal alchemist cel animated", even the AI google response says it was. How strange, but I suppose it makes sense that it wasn't. I can't find a SINGLE example of a cel from the series, even in a gallery setting. I just took Googles word for it. Goes to show that you can't trust AI lol 😅

I’d love to own cels myself, but prices aside I don’t really think I’d be able keep them in good condition, so I’ll leave em to the collectors. I’ll say this in regards to Dragon Ball, despite the Dragon Box DVDs from Japan having the best picture quality for the complete series at the moment, especially when compared to the western releases, the colors are horribly warped and faded due to improper film storage and poor scanning. Thankfully because Dragon Ball cels are still out there and can be used as reference, people like Seed of Might have been able to color correct the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT Dragon Box releases to get the series looking how it should which is a huge Godsend, and is a great example as to how cels can be used to restore the colors of older cartoons and anime.

You're 100% correct! Same thing happened to Sailor Moons original 16mm reels as well, and gives the show a pinkish tint that wasn't how the series was meant to look! It's a great rabbit hole to go down, along with the butchering the of the original 4:3 aspect ratio

question! I have recently gotten a cel with two layers to it and i'm wondering how I should store them. one cel has the heads and one cel has the clothes on them. additianally it came with the copy of the background on paper. Can I store them on top of each other when each cel is in a sleeve? i store them in a portfolio
@NEScRETRO2 ай бұрын
I would separate each layer using one of those time magazine bags that I mentioned in the video, that way they could still be layered on top of each other, but there's no risk of the paint sticking to the other cel layer! With that, you can also put the background behind them without risk of damage! And, again, as long as the two cels are separated by something, like the time magazine sleeves, you can certainly store them on top of each other, just air them out occasionally and check for signs of vinegar syndrome!

Dang you have a bunch of good Dragon Ball Z ones, I'm drowning in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Doug, and Captain N cels.

@Justinjaro I'd love to get a Doug cel! Hey Arnold would be my grail Nickelodeon cel, but they're pretty pricey! I need to jump on a spongebob one while they're still under $500!

By the way, you said The little mermaid was the last disney feature to use cel animation, but I think The goofy movie was on cels as well
@NEScRETRO4 ай бұрын
From my research, A Goofy Movie used Digital Ink and Paint! It very well may have used sketched cels that were scanned to be painted, but at the very least, they were painted digitally!

i watch your channel cause your icebergs but i didn't know you were a fan of cell animation. Thanks to your terminology i could found cell sheets on alliexpress so i'm waiting hoping to get some empty sheets to try doing my own animations on paper. Since you have cell animations i have a question: does the lineart is drawn on one side of the sheet and coloring is in the other side ? or everything is made in the same side of the sheet?
@NEScRETRO3 ай бұрын
@@Gonsoi yes! The line art is copied from the genga/sketch sheet on one side, then flipped over and pained on the reverse side! I'm not exactly sure how the painting process is done upside down like that, however. You may be able to find a cel painting guide on youtube!
