As a cel collector, I loved this video. Great work, man! One correction though... The incorrectly colored lines on Naoto Ohshima's Sonic CD cels aren't actually from the paint mixing with the black outlines. It's due to light damage-- if cels are stored improperly and exposed to light for a decent period of time, the lines (which were originally Xeroxed from paper to celluloid plastic sheets) begin to fade. This is why it's only the black outlines that are affected and not the paint, which is applied manually after the Xerox process. All of the Dragon Ball Z cels I have all have this problem as well, haha. Silly Toei and their negligence! :D

This is such a great video on a very amazing aspect of franchise histories, with a pretty amazing community to boot. I have owned cels for a number of years now after my first major acquisition being a *shiny* noctowl cel from Pokemon - Pokemon cels are actually quite hard to come by thanks to how locked down they are with assets not being released, but the few that have made it out are all pretty amazing and in quite good condition compared to cels from companies such a Toei. Line-fading in cels can happen without the introduction of UV to the celluloid but also by the minerals that make up the paint layer on the other side having a chemical reaction with the inking medium. Toei, at least for Sailor Moon, used xerography/xerox processes to transfer the cel sketches through to the celluloid directly from the sketches (a technique first used by Disney in films such as Aristocats, 101 Dalmations, etc which allowed for a more 'sketchy' but detailed and fluid animation to be captured,) reducing the production time/cost of needing to ink the pieces by hand before painting, but the downside to their xerox method is the fact that very rich pigments such as reds, or skin tones which use reds, fade the lines very easily over time. Not so bad when your painted and cured cel is scanned/photographed in for the sequence, but for archival preservation? Not the best. I've been archiving Queen Beryl cels from Sailor Moon and the insight to the animation process they've gleaned for me, such as airbrush overlay layers and more for special effects, have been pretty amazing. Production art of Atlantis the Lost Empire also has been a very big thing for me, as I love that underdog of a movie but also adore the art style, so preserving pieces of its production (digitally coloured, but pencilled by hand for the animation side) including storyboards or concept art has been an wonderful experience. I also have been sorting and organising over 1,000+ studio model sheets used by OLM's teams for Pokemon, which I'm slowly scanning through that showcase all the animator references that are still used even in the day and age of digital animation in these production houses. Some of them show animation timing on how things like flapping wings work on certain Pokemon, which I then animate myself to show exactly why those resources and references are really neat. If you ever decide to get your hands on some cels, or even production sheets/sketches/storyboards, and want to know good ways to safely store them and protect them for the longterm hit me up. viperfox.rubberslug.com/gallery/home.asp

The fact that some companies keep all of their cels safe in archives is in my opinion good. That means we could someday get new hd scans of all the animations.

As a big fan of animation. (Anime in particular) I find animation cels very interesting in its own right. I currently don't have any of those, but I'm sure if I have a chance I would get one someday. One interesting tidbit about cel animation is that, while in Japan this kind of animation was aborted in the early 2000s. Some studios still make hand drawn frames on paper for reference afterward. The more recent example is Kyoto Animation. They shown off behind-the-scene stuff at one of their recent expo of sort. And there's quite a few hand drawn frames on paper there.

This is a really interesting video, I love the stories behind how these are found (like the Sailor Moon guy being arrested) because it's always so crazy or unexpected. Here's hoping those Sonic OVA cels are found eventually, "Sunglasses Knuckles" would make a very nice centerpiece for my desk!

Since you mentioned that early version of the Sonic SatAM intro, it inspired me to attempt to find it. I've contacted the storyboarder for the intro, Lane Raichet, and the executive producer of SatAM, Andy Heyward. I've gotten a response from Lane, saying he hasn't found it in his archive, but will let me know if he finds it. This intro could be found, and you bringing it up was the inspiration for me to begin my search!

An update, I think I found one of the boxes that have my old plushes in them. It'll probably be a day or so before I’m able to get to it, but when I do I’ll be sure to let you know if it has the Starman plush in it. Oh and another thing at 16:43 those two reference sheets for Sonic from Toei are different meaning that there were likely multiple different sheets having varying designs for Sonic, like how the one on the left has more quills than the one from Generations. I can’t help but wonder how many different design variations may have existed for the different animators who worked on the CD opening.

Thanks for doing this awesome video! I recently discovered the joy of animation cel collecting. I always knew it was something you could get, but it never occurred to me to actually get one until I was presented with the opportunity to buy some at NYCC - there was a vendor who had a friggin ton of cels used in the first season of Spongebob. I picked one up. He even had a few with master backgrounds as well, that would have been incredible to own but too rich for my blood! Anyway... This sent me down a total rabbit hole online, learning more and seeing what’s available on eBay... Now I want to find stuff from Disney movies, old merry melodies shorts, Pokemon, all the stuff I grew up with as a kid. These are the original artworks that were directly used in their production and gave joy to millions of people around the world. In a way, you really can’t put a price on that!

YES!! I love animation cels. I just about got into them nearly 2 years ago, and Spongebob introduced me. And for some reason I couldn't find any animation cels around that time related to family guy so the fact you found one is pretty cool. I was obsessed with thinking of every show that came out before 2001 looking for cels of that show.

Man that Inferno story is really depressing and devastating, especially seeing one of the burnt cels being a character from Sailor Moon crying If I ever had the tools and lots of patience, and possibly a team, I would love to recreate cels and possibly give them to the person. Yeah they would probably be missing signatures and dates and whatnot from the original cels, but I think stuff like that can be improvised in some way. Like maybe finding what’s the frame in one cel in a scene and trying to see what number it is by looking at other existing numbered cels
@alexlikestodraw4585 жыл бұрын
As someone who enjoys drawing art hoping to dip my toes into animation one day, seeing those burnt cels hits home for me. Heck, and I was born in 2002! These shows are probably older than me haha. To have detailed backgrounds, poses, main colors, shading, and line art all with hours of these animators lives just shredded.. The equivalent of an animators animation program crashing and the file being corrupted. OnO Not to mention the look of all these cels capture my heart with all of its colors and over all look, but I ain’t got the money to be buying any of these honeys that’s for sure! Either way, I had no idea how fragile these cels were D : Thank you so much for introducing more of this topic to me! ^^ Even if I was 4 when ‘06 came out, Cel Animation will always be a charm to admire of a time where I haven’t become alive yet

Hey! Heidi here. FYI: I still have some Rockman 8 cels up for grabs, and I made sure to scan all of them before selling. I'll be making a proper gallery at some point, because I want to make sure that, even if the cels get into collectors' hands, people still have access to the images. imgur.com/a/yTuMc Hit me up @zerochan or here if you're interested in buying. I tried to make my own video about the cels, but I'm terrible at recording/editing, so it's sitting on my HDD. There's some really interesting stuff in the mix: One Duo cel I have (that I'm holding onto for myself) actually has the celluloid part spliced together from a few different cels. The top part is a discarded cel from a *completely different show* made at the same studio. I really should get a picture of it. My only regret is that it wasn't X4. I love that game.

32:16 Digital files are too easy to be deleted. Toy Story 2 is that one example, but it is a CG movie. The original was accidentally deleted from a drive, but a woman who worked on it had a copy in her home computer, and brought the computer to restore what was left. With paints, papers, and cels, they do take time for them to be gone.

Thank you for making this video, Patmac! I am a huge fan of cartoons in general, and now, knowing much more about how cool animation cels are due to your video, I have become very interested in cel collecting. Unfortunately, I am a jobless teenager, so I'll have to be pretty lucky to get my hands on any anytime soon. But who knows? Maybe a box of animation cels from Yellow Submarine will randomly yeet itself through our bathroom window in the middle of the night. I've heard that kind of thing happens all the time.
