The longer I think about it the more I start to believe this is a forgotten masterpiece. The world building is outstanding, numerous themes about society and individuals woven together in the most human and believable character arc I can think of. The animation is gorgeous and the soundtrack is unique. I always though Star Trek asks the question 'what does it mean to be human?' and this one film asks and answers that question better than an entire series. The writers for the film deserve a ton of credit.

I see the whole attempted rape sequence differently because shortly after Riquinni comes home following Shiro's day alone with the bratty little girl, and immediately after she removes her shoe to reveal that she's hoarding money in it, he sees her differently, and it hurts him to see that she's not as altruistic as she appeared to him. I don't see his attack so much as a matter of him just wanting to take care of his sexual repression as much as he's angry, hurt, and he wants to express how angry he is upon Riquinni. Also, notice that he hesitates when he looks upon her terrified face, and it seems to me that he then realized what a terrible thing that he was doing, and what he was about to do to her. So, it's sort of a shame that they could have given more of a hint of that realization before Riquinni clocks him with the candelabra. Anyway, that's my take on it. I see it more of an act of anger and resentment rather than one of simply being sexually frustrated.

hands down favorite anime movie. perfect execution of a science fiction setting that operates beyond window dressing. more of an alternate version of earth than a full blown in your face sci fi type plot

Great review. The launch of the rocket is one of the best animated scenes in anime history. The rape scene is an integral parto of Shiro's character development and cannot be ignored in my opinion. Does she really forgive him btw? The Japanese language can be very subtle and often these subtle and implied elements can get lost in translation into English.
@RedJester68
@RedJester68 8 жыл бұрын
+saigokun I think she honestly forgave him and that is what led to Shiro developing further when Riquinni asked *him* to forgive her for attacking him when he forced himself on her. She was so selfless and willing to forgive him for attempting to commit such a horrible act, it made him look inside himself and try to better himself.
@saigokun
@saigokun 8 жыл бұрын
+RedJester68 Perhaps she did but their friendship was more distanced from each other then before his attampt, notice how they say goodbye to each other just before he goes to the harbour. Forgiving is a very important issue in Japanese society. But I agree with you that he was forced to look inside himself to make a change possible.

The 'scene' adds to the movie, not subtracts. It follows very logically, albeit jarringly, from the events leading up to it. IMO it was one of the best moments in the movie, not to mention the most startling.

I just saw this movie and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. To touch on the controversial scene, I think it actually plays an important part towards showing Shiro's character. I think its there to show that Shiro isn't a perfect character. He's a good guy, but he is still flawed as a person. He had been stressed out by the constant training, questions about the point in space travel, views of how the money going into the space project is affecting the populous, learning how that money is being acquired, and being shot down by Riquinni. I'm not justifying his actions, but i'm saying that his actions show that he is flawed and that's what the movie was trying to portray. He realizes what he's doing during the act and stops himself, knowing that what he was doing was wrong and understanding that he's flawed and that all this stress coming down on him is affecting him. It's after this scene that Shiro seems to be reinvigorated in his goals to becoming the first astronaut once again, showing that now that he has an understanding of his flaws, he'll do what he has to do in order to make amends for his actions. The way I took it, if that scene had never happened Shiro may have returned to space force anyways, but may not have done it to make history or to spread the idea of the project being for peace over all else.

Excellent review of my favorite anime of all time,(subtitles only). My take on the attempted rape was that Riquinni was in fact, prostituting herself; (eg. The money hidden in her shoe). And as a man whose aimless, daily life ended in a nightly tour of the red light district, this must've been a major let down for Shiro who'd come to regard her as the one innocent fixed point in an otherwise decadent society. Her 'religion ', helps her attain some sort of absolution at having feed Mana and herself in so base a manner. She feels dirty and ashamed; to the point of apologizing to Shiro for a justifiable act of self defense. That said, I'm happy to have stumbled across your channel. You're thoughtful and intelligent, unlike the 'Def Comedy Jam millenial wannabes infesting the web.

The Rocky comparison is spot on. I couldn't put my finger on it but that's definitely a good analogy. Even to correlate it w/ the sexual assault scene, in Rocky I there's a pretty infamous scene where Rocky goes over Adrian's house and Rocky gets between her and the door in a fairly aggressive manner when Adrian wants Rocky to leave. Obviously the Royal Space Force scene is much more graphic and takes it much further but it's another parallel. Side Note: I found this film hilarious, the humor is subtle but extremely clever and well timed. The street sweeper scene reminded me a little of Roujin Z, maybe Otomo was taking a little influence from Gainax.

This is a movie I've been looking for. I remember an anime film about religion and space travel, on an alternate world. And at the end, the first astronaut makes a big speech about God and stuff while he's in space. It was probably in 2007, that's when I was watching anime films all the time. I sorta liked it and sorta didn't. I'm not exactly religious, so I didn't like that it was about finding God and stuff. Now it sounds fascinating, so I gotta see it again. I can't believe how long it took to find and watch Steamboy again after seeing it once or twice in 2007 and loving it to bits. I don't even remember the rape scene. I think it was just put in there to make the main character more flawed and human, rather than being a perfect paragon of virtue. But it was clearly overkill anyway.

I love this movie and I think that as unfortunate as it is, the famous scene was necessary to the Shiro's and Riquini's development within the story. I recommend though that you watch the movie with the original dialogue, and subtitles on. It isn't just that the dub has bad dialogue (sorry Bryan Cranston). The English dub is also a completely watered down version of the story. There are complete sections of dialogue that are missing in the dub, and there are jokes that were genuinely funny in the original that are just plain dumb in the dub. It's almost a different movie.

I should probably correct myself, while i did feel similar to Lafeel i didn't miss a beat for Wings of Honneamise. While i respect the bond between Shirotsugh and Riquinni as being one of the best male female pairings i have seen. It ends up feeling a tad wanting at times. And I feel the scene you mention is what brings up that puzzlement on how to rate this series in the end. While... certain scenes like this doesn't bother me in particular and can sometimes manipulate my emotion in a positive manner towards a series. I felt it was just thrown in and holds no relevance to the story overall. The music is another issue i had with the film regardless of the year i felt it didn't hold enough impact as it could have. While i certainly do remember the musical direction being on time when it needed to be which is honestly highly creditable in itself. I felt perhaps a piano or a violin just one instrument lightly played in certain areas could have really put so much more color into this film. Also these positive reviews of yours are my favorite you ultimately changed my opinion on this series as well as *Perfect Blue* keep them coming. And a shout out goes to Crest of the stars for being the best anime pairing i have seen period. Coincidentally, Lafeel Abriel is one of those characters.

I still don't get the rape scene, it really gets to me with what this movie really is all around it. The director was either out of his mind when he wrote that one scene or maybe something else, but it completely destroys their relationship in my view, rape isn't good in an universal use. What's worse is that I kind of appreciate he tries to get her to forgive him, she doesn't even acknowledge it and acts like she's in the wrong; even a nun would grasp that being raped is on the rapist's fault. I don't think it fits the MC at all considering his development
