Its not just the words that change. Its the acting of the words. For example, the scene where Eren and Mikasa are surprised the war hammer didnt die: In dub, Eren's VA add's abit of surprise to Eren's voice, giving him a bit of emotion when he should be emotionless (to a degree). In the Sub, Eren's VA maintains the emotionless trait and speaks more monotone.

Michael Tatum will always be my favorite VA for commander Erwin. Yuki is better at the sincere scenes while Bryce feels more intense and aggressive in scene like “IM GONNA KILL YOU!!” Also mikasa in Japanese saying to histora to pick “Eren or Ymir?” Vs English saying “Eren? Or the bitch I’m about to kill.” Scenes like that hit different in English

While most are better fitted in sub, you can’t deny that Erwin’s speech “my soldiers rage” in dub was straight fire. If you haven’t heard it, I recommend watching that part in dub. It gives me chills

same! the sub in this particular case is better by enough that i tried to watch the dub and I couldn't. and I try to watch dubbed for everything because it's way easier for me to follow what's going on instead of having to read the subtitles constantly

I watched the show subbed the first watch and just refinished it in english. I felt like the dub hit me harder emotionally than the sub did. I don't watch much anime but I do prefer the sub dbs than the dub (besides beerus the dub va is so cool)

I prefer the dub. Don’t really care if the “sub-only” snobs disagree. The dub voice actors did an outstanding job. Levi, Erwin, Hanji, Armin, Eren, especially all sounded fantastic. And the Titan roars were badass. Sounded like an actual enraged beast, rather than the yell of an deep-pitched angry man. Also on a side note, if you’re going to do a voice comparison it’s probably better not to pitch the audio. I know it’s probably for copyright reasons, but it really just throws off the whole “comparison” part. You don’t really get the same feeling from listening to it. And that goes for both dub and sub. This is one of those cases where they're equal. They both have their pros and cons. For example I think Levi's Japanese VA sounds way more like how I want Levi to sound, that slight nihilism and non-caring in his tone. The English voice is by no means bad, but he doesn't capture that. But in other parts the dub shines more.

This video really misses part of the point though. A big problem with the dub is that they change stuff that the characters said and add stuff they didn't say and basically americanize the dialogue. Imagine watching Downton Abbey with all the voices dubbed over by actors with New York City accents, or a Southern accents, and also adding in local slang terms for things. It fundamentally changes the show into something else, so much so that you aren't really watching the same show anymore.

Exactly, and a lot of the tones and the way the lines are translated from Japanese to English aren't close to accurate either :/ Typically, dubs change some lines, but good dubs maintain the same message through tone. Unfortunately, Attack on Titan's dub doesn't do that, which is the issue.

Most of the time (with theexception of Cowboy Bebop, the greatest dub of all time & actually sounds better than the Japanese sub imo) the dubs lack the intensity or emotion of what's being said, or just don't match the characters at all imho (e.g. not matching the age) 🤷🏻‍♀️ Erwin and Ymir by far were the only redeeming eng va's; they were superb. Connie was decent and Grisha surprisingly was pleasant to hear. Everyone is obsessed with Pieck's eng va, and I get it, the voice sounds "beautiful"...but I don't think they're necessarily being objective 😑 -Eren's eng va sounds way too old and winded, total mismatch (although it improves slightly in season 4), bar far one of the most annoying. He honestly sounds like a character from an 80s American cartoon >.> Honestly he sounds like a little bish and is the sole reason I couldn't commit to the eng dub. Like how are you going to f*ck up the main? smh -Hange's eng va sounds like a total mismatch; too preppy and screechy, not matching the masculine side of her character at. all. -Historia - need I say anything? Total screechfest...I think my ears bled on the Utgard castle episodes -Mikasa's eng voice sounds soooo forced. Like she's trying to sell lingerie for gods sake -Armin eng va sounded like he'd never get laid. So, accurate I suppose. -Levi eng va sounds like he was simply reading a script; sleepy or lazy? -Annie - horrible -Sasha - wtf -Nearly everyone else: **Yawn**, forgettable 😮‍💨 (There were decent side characters that I didn't mention. )

Being as I don’t understand Japanese it’s a lot easier to feel the emotions of the characters when watching the dub. It’s not like dubbing a live action show or movie where the sounds clearly don’t fit with the visuals.

The reason English DUB will always sound terrible and objectively off-putting, no matter how talented the VAs are, is because the DUB translators/writers have to make the English VA's words match the animation (which is backwards to how animation is normally created) and in turn makes the beats and flow of dialogue VERY strange. The English VA's are directed to match the cadence of the original Japanese VA's, which turns it into an "uncanny valley," highschool stage play sounding kind of acting. So whenever I'm talking to someone who thinks DUB is better than SUB, I ask them to close their eyes and put these voices to live action people and they realize just how bizarre and over-acted it sounds. You would literally never hear that inauthentic cadence in any live action show or English origin animation. This is the reason there's never a complaint of voice acting with animation studios such as Disney, Dreamworks, Illumination Studios, etc. because they never have to force their VA's to contort their way of speaking to fit into a pre-existing mold of mouth movements in order to sound genuine. Its just naturally is genuine, when you record VA first THEN animate the scene. No matter what, DUB is always going to sound disingenuous because English has a non-rhythmic, high stress pattern where Japanese has same beat rhythm, low stress patterns. It simply does not work on a fundamental level. I can't believe I have to explain this to people who think dub sounds good 🤦‍♀️

@@YoBoiHrcky That everyone knows but the thing, but the Japanese linguists and script writers for years now created a version of Japanese to make it sound cool. If I pick a line from anime and view it through the lenses of modern Japanese, it will be wrong fundamentally wrong but for the anime version of Japanese, it not only is correct but sounds cool. In short, Japanese didn't hesitate to create a different version of their language from their already refined version and that is only because of the fundamental structure of Japanese which doesn't depend on position of subject and verb but in English it's impossible because in any Indo-European language, position of subject and verb matters a lot. In short, English Dubs can never match with the refinement that the original Japanese feels like. That's why, those cringe lines, over-reacting lines will still meaningful and cool in Japanese than English. As a N3 Japanese learner, I know enough Japanese to fully understand why dubs will always sound weird.
