The fact that at the start they refer to what I typically hear called the "Bust" as a "Head sculpture" almost makes me think the translation was just taken via Google Translate rather than with a human translator, just cause that's a much more verbose way of saying the same thing for no discernable reason.
@lord30313 ай бұрын
As someone with plenty of experience in a field (mostly in my native language though), I can attest that it's most likely a human-made translation, but a poorly made one nonetheless. It bears a lot of the usual junk that comes with amateurish translations (the most obvious clue is hilarious typos that should be absent in machine-made text (the fine state of 'Taxes' is my favorite one)). And such opinion is even further reinforced by the fact that one of the people credited as 'translator' in the game seems to be the same one who wrote its story. My guess is simple: one dev and a couple of their friends knew a lil bit of english, and they decided that such knowledge would be sufficient enough for making a correct translation. And, sadly, the end result of their decision speaks for itself. (But then again, I always had too much faith in humanity, and maybe devs really just dumped their script into google translate, made a couple of small adjustments and called it a day; that would be pretty sad though)

Okay, while I have not played Doorkickers, the basic gameplay does seem similar from what I could gather. However, the premise of "Alien invasion, where aliens spread something infectious to conquer" with the real-time-tactics gameplay reminds more of "UFO Aftermath" - but there, it was spores and the mutation also affected almost everyone as well as animals. Even the "all special forces around the world unite to take on the alien threat" is the same, but it was military in general in UFO. Most of the gameplay was also rather similar to DoorKickers, but in Early-2000s 3D, and with a lot more out-of-combat stuff in regards to bases and research (similar to X-COM, which UFO is a spiritual successor to) As for the "characters interact with each other", we do run into a minor issue if we leave the recruiting up to the player, but we *do* have one game that solves the issue and ironically is also a "Special Forces against Aliens" game: XCOM Chimera Squad (granted, the Aliens are regular citizens by then, and you're just a SWAT team with alien team-members, but still). There, interactions between characters were usually held in voice-over randomly at base, or with adding some random comments from an active member at the start of a mission. But they also had general lines for when they did their special actions. Plot was mostly delivered by NPCs, however, with the team only throwing in the odd comment. So, it seems that as a proof of concept game or early access, this seems a fine start. But as a finished game, this is bad, especially with the really bad translation. Because that one is 100% just made via Google Translate and not much effort. But if the devs actually bother and may make a proper sequel that's "UFO Aftermath but with Door Kickers combat - and Chimera Squad teammember interactions", I certainly would pick that one up, even without Anime Girls.

See, I think the problem is that you're definitely not the target audience of this game. As someone who does play these kind of military tactical games, most of stuff you frame as negatives are like... pretty much a given in the genre. Briefings that are a dry wall of text, loads of military jargon where its assumed player already knows it, mechanics that aren't really explained because fanatics will already be familiar with them, or will look them up - like, characters in first three Rainbow Six games also have no personalities of any kind and are just interchangeable stat blocks. Similarly, the fact that Mossad's ability is game breaking is normal - these games are hard to balance so there *usually* is some cheesy strat that you have to actively avoid playing to not ruin game for yourself. This is... sort of the norm for low-budget tactical games. For people who like milsim tactical games, a lot of the flaws that are so bad for you are just a background noise of the genre. People tolerate that, for a simple reason is that there is very limited amount of games like this. Doorkickers is better... sure, but what are you gonna do after you finished Doorkickers ten times in single and multiplayer? Doorkickers 2 is STILL in Early Access after 4 years. This, in contrast, for 4 dollars, it's not a bad value for your money.
@TomaszRyszkowski3 ай бұрын
I can see your points, but let's not excuse parts of the game outright not working by the fact that there aren't many games in this genre. Like yeah i guess for a fan of the genre this will do because it has to do, but for somebody from outside, the game is still a buggy mess, and all of the problems Grael mentioned still exist. I can agree with the price being really good on this one tho, i'm not sure why it wasn't mentioned there lol
@ShinoSarna3 ай бұрын
@@TomaszRyszkowski I might've poorly explained it. I mentioned Doorkickers more in a sense that like - one might easily make argument "play Doorkickers instead" but that's a fallacy, because I guarantee you 99% of people who seriously played and liked 10-4 have already played Doorkickers, and probably have dozens of hours in it. The point isn't that it's a buggy mess - it's just most of these flaws will not be that big flaws to a military tactics fan. Just because you can easily clear the game in 5 hours by cheesing it with Mossad doesn't mean anything, because fan of the genre would challenge themselves to not use it. Cheesing enemies with long range weapons is overpowered, but that is the case in like, a huge chunk of tactical games, sniping is almost always the cheesy strat. There is little story because nobody plays these games for story, its mostly there for context and flavor. Mechanics are obtuse because figuring them out is half the fun. It's a design philosophy that might seem outdated nowadays, but I don't see how this is any different than other retro throwbacks on Steam - it's just this isn't emulating style not of a NES platformer, but like a mid-90s PC strategy game or something like that. Like, it's like if a modern dungeon crawler first person RPG required you to draw your own map of the dungeon (and some in fact do). To outsiders this might seem time-wasting and outdated, but to the fanatics making your own maps is half the fun.
