Please welcome back onto the field, the oldest band in the Pac12 conference, the spirit and sound of OSU, they’re here to save the world, but they’re too old to pilot Evas, it’s the Oregon State University Marching Band!
The nineteen nineties saw an expansion of movie and television products exported from Japan to the rest of the world. These animated series gave less attention to the animation of movement and more to the realism of the settings and complexity of plot. Credited with helping push animated media out of the realm of exclusively children’s programing, the Anime genre is beloved by many the world around.

Our first piece was from one of the first overseas hits of the genre, aired originally in nineteen sixty seven under the name Lupin The Third. Up next, a modern classic of sci-fi horror, Attack on Titan.

We close today’s program with music from one of the most influential anime of all time. Possessing complex characters and a richness of narrative, Neon Genesis Evangelion is credited with helping revive the anime industry and has become an international icon for the genre.

The Spirit and Sound of OSU is under the direction of Director of Bands Dr. Erik Leung and Director of Athletics Bands Olin Hannum. I marched for 8 consecutive years on the trumpet. Technically the choreography was not all that challenging, that's cause the music was fucking hard as hell, beginning was rough on entrances and releases but damn, I myself would have been gased by the mid of cruel angels thesis. I also had the privilege of performing at Corvallis on OSU's stadium, that shit - if I remember right - is natural turf, one of the more difficult terrains to march for those that don't know. Out of ten I would give this a solid 7. I could def tell when the weebs of the band would get excited and blow out the tonality of the music, it had some super rough spots, but considering all that went into this from seasoned veteran of the marching world, I am impressed

As a weeb myself, I’m really excited and happy they played aot and nge. However, as a band nerd with four years of marching band experience, some of the chords of aot and nge, were kinda off. Near the end of aot some chord progressions didnt sound right. In the “ah, ah, ah, ah” part the trumpets seemed too loud, that part in the song is more like the icing on cake, rather than the cake itself. Plus in nge, some chords in the beginning i could tell werent worked on very well and who should be the main voice to fit into. There were also way too many trumpets on some sections, literally all i heard was trumpet. It couldve been better had the bass voices been a tad louder and maybe take down an octave on trumpet voices as some of them couldnt hit those high notes very well. From my last marching show, i know that trumpets playing in the high octaves are not easy, in the slightest for prolonged periods of time. Some spots really didn’t sound right imo. Please don’t attack me :’)

You're not wrong. I was in the trumpet section for this show and there were about 45 of us. By far the largest section in the band. When our section practiced, there were reports of us being heard from across campus a mile away. Our motto was "Trumpets! LOUDER!" and I even have that embroidered on a hat.

In high school marching band, the director would have somewhat of an unwritten rule with us: put in that WORK and show out in our performances, and we'd be rewarded with days where we just chill in the bandroom, no questions asked. When it was time to work, we'd play until the lacquer eroded from the brass and run laps around the hot South Carolina practice field for every screw-up; we were dedicated. When it was time to chill, I'd sneak my iPod Touch to his class (electronics were strictly forbidden in my HS back then, 2007-2011), and he'd always turn a blind eye. My close friends and I in the brass section would just watch anime the entire lunch and band blocks/periods. We kept it low-key, since anime wasn't as widely, publicly-accepted by the general pop, but everyone in band respected one another. That room was our absolute sanctuary, and we were a VERY tight-knit group. Band director always kept that door locked, not only for our privacy, but seemingly to protect us from having our belongings exposed to other teachers. It was a mutual trust. Seeing anime music on this brought back a lot of old memories, and man does it make me smile!
