as far as "they look 15 but are actually hundreds of years old" argument goes, I'm somewhat iffy about it, but it all very much comes down to the player's intent Most of the time it's very clear and obvious to tell when someone genuinely wants to explore and play as a character who ages slowly, and when the person just wants to have an excuse to be a creep and get away with doing questionable roleplaying with a young looking, sounding, and acting character, but uses the "they're actually chronologically really old" as an easy out

What if i wanna roleplay as the dream traveller who could possibly be technically incomprehensibly ancient but remains a young boy in every world he's summoned to? My first character was actually a human child who convinced the party that she's a halfling. Now, everyone but the actual halfling in our party knows her true identity.
@Awesomenoob254 жыл бұрын
I can get why a DM may not allow a child PC, as they do not want to have/narrate a child dying or being hurt. It really depends on that situation what everyone is alright with, and if for example, a DM does not want child death in their campaign as they feel uncomfortable having that be an aspect, I think it is entirely reasonable to disallow PCs that are too young.
@Awesomenoob254 жыл бұрын
at the same time though, I think it is important for the DM to try to allow things and be open-minded where possible, as it is at the end of the day, a game of make-believe. Don't think any hate should be thrown around about your character's age, sex/gender, race, etc. but for some people, child death is too far, others, it is not. just like how racism, slavery, sexism, cultism, etc in-game may be something which the DM and players may want to explore (ideally, responsibly and maturely) (e.g. nobody likes drow or half-orcs). The two most important things are that everyone is 1) having fun and 2) feel comfortable and feel as if they are in a safe space.

Does a growned up adult death is more comfortable then ? I mean, those are fictionnals characters, soooo... It doesn't really matter, right ?
@homerman764 жыл бұрын
@@niveknaylik531 It's all a matter of perspective, kind of like how people draw the line at seeing the death of children in any other story format, as the concept makes people uncomfortable due to the innocent nature of children, whereas adults and/or teens dying kind of depends on how well you know the characters involved and how it happens (many don't care too much about a criminal dying under normal circumstances, but add in that it was a tortured inhumane death and the comfort levels may drop.) This all of course depends on how connected you get to a game, just because something is fictional, doesn't mean it can't feel real (there's a reason people get attached to certain characters after all and may feel detached from a series when said characters are gone.)
@marcar9marcar9724 жыл бұрын

The best character ever made was a child wizard. So I rolled bad, but I had rolled a 17 for one, still I was a little bumped. Then I realized that I could make a character that fits this role perfectly. So my character was a grant wizard one of the greatest in the nation and he was getting old. He didn't like that so he wished that he would be young again well the wish turned him into an infant and now he is like 10. While he retained his magical knowledge he knows how to cast high level spells his young body can't handle it and it will turn to ash the moment he attempts to use higher level spells. He must slowly retrain his body to handle the magic once again (that is how we flavored the wizard magically learning new spells to put in his spellbook every level) . As to why the stats I rolled made the perfect sense for the character. 5 strength he is a 10 year old he isn't strong 11 dexterity he is a kid he has small hands 12 constitution kids aren't known for being sturdy 17 intelligence he still has all his knowledge 10 wisdom kids aren't known for keeping their temper and not throwing tantrums 7 charisma when was the last time a 10 year old kid convinced an adult to do anything Even though I played this character for a few sessions to this day that kid is the most fun I had in the table Kid characters are awesome XD

I ruled that you must be at least 15 years old for fighting classes, they need to be old enough to swing a sword. All magic base classes can be around 10 since magic does not need any physical states but you need to be old enough to understand how to use magic in the right situations. Other then that no overtly stereotype PC less you can make them believable. This seems to keep everyone happy and keeps out those who go super cringey

I'd argue that a wizard would warrant a higher age requirement due to being based in education and study, attaining magic power through extensive learning. But other than that, I concur.
@aquamarinerose54052 жыл бұрын
As someone else said I'd argue kinda the opposite with mages taking longer. Also, I think that older editions of D&D did starting ages basically perfectly. For a human, Baseline Adulthood is considered at 15 years of age, but each class rolled a die on a specific table to determine their actual starting age. Though I think that the concept can be applied more generally. so you'd get like... The hardest part for me when I have players talk to me about there characters comes down to the intent of there characters. I've seen many that were the overpowered isekia protagonist mindset, even though I explained this session zero that won't be ok... I've seen one where they were of loli based age, only for them wanting to go to a brothel for all the wrong reasons... Just be carful of who you let join. What character concept they want to go for. And know what you, especially as the DM, know your bondreys and set them at the start.

@2712animefreak2 жыл бұрын
@@nerosoul2506 I'd say it depends on the alignment of the place the brothel is in. If I were to dm this seriously, in LG and NG places, they would probably send in the guards, but in a, say, CN town, they might let the kid go in because they believe that children should learn through their own mistakes and experience rather than being told what to do. In a LE or NE town, they'll let the kid go in and won't ask questions because they payed the fee. In a CE place, they would let the kid go in and give them a discount, as debauchery itself is their goal, but there will be consequences, such as demonic possession and stuff.

Racial bonuses are ok, you might be playing the fantasy equivalent of a real world race, but its still fantasy and that person isn't human thus they would have different strengths and weaknesses. As for getting unfair treatment in universe, isn't that the point sometimes. Tieflings are human/fiend hybrids and get ducked on for their ancestry, Orcs form tribes with some of them being violent thus giving the race a bad reputation, or a fantasy kingdom that looks down on the "lower races". I'm not a SJW but racism is still a real thing. The point is that a we know its wrong in real life, so has long its not painted so thick where the whole thing is uncomfortable to play or that it's saying that a real world race or group needs to die because their ancestors were slave owners or did bad things to another religion. If we judged people by the sins of our ancestors we might as well NUKE THE PLANET cause no one would be truly innocent. We don't lock up the children of convicted felons. Anyway if the campaign starts becoming to racially charged for ya talk to your DM or just go find another group. It's that simple.
@viktortzarofthexbox29874 жыл бұрын
@@AMPMASTER10 bingo. Another thing I think is flawed with that assessment is that we as humans are all basically the same with different faces so the dnd races are too. We all come from the same background so we innately have similar traits. Orks and Dwarves or Yuan-Ti and Dragonborn don’t have that connection and thus innately have different abilities. TL;DR: comparing Orks and humans is like comparing a lion and a human. Both can be good at hunting and tracking but one is innately given the tools to do so where the other one has to work for it a bit more than the other.

Well, IMO about anime in D&D, is that if your gonna add stuff from anime into you campaign, then it should either make sense to your world, or it should be agreed that this is either the same anime world, or that yeah I know, because to me if you directly add it without modifying the lore for your world, because it may just feel out of place. I did a one-off with my group and the oldest of our characters was 15 and the youngest was 8 years (this was our Halloween special). The session proved to be very intense because we were role-playing a bunch of kids without adult supervision in a dark forest full of werewolves. All of us had a blast and no body caused any issues. Except for maybe me, I instigated just about every intense moment and that included combat. Still, no one died and everyone got to do what they wanted as their characters. It baffles me that people are squeamish when other players choose to role-play as teenagers/kids because there aren’t one now. Have we not all grown up as kids at some point in our lives or am I the only one who went through the bizarre and mystical years from birth to high school graduation? Just because we hear about players botching their role-play and character development doesn’t mean you or other players can’t pull it off either. If your a DM who has a players who is making you and the other players uncomfortable with their role-play, take that player aside and let them know. More specifically, let them know that you want them to have fun as well as the other players. Whether they are playing as a anime girl or not, the principal is still the same.

The reason she acted like this all the time is to confuse her enemies and use her acting skills to be extra unpredictable. Once, she even managed to convince a bunch of NPCs that the power of friendship is a real thing, and they never messed with the party, when they were together, because "together, they are a hundred times stronger". Only issue I see with PCs being younger than late teens/early adulthood is that it kinda forces the other party members to be fine effectively babysitting, with more murder involved. There is generally a certain degree of 'you do you' kind of respect between party members, since each are assumed to be responsible for their own decisions. This, however, makes less sense when the character making the decisions is a 10 year old. There are some interesting themes to explore here as well, like responsibility and maturity in face of danger. Younger characters work best if the child in question has no permanent home. If the party asks "Where are your parents?" the player playing that character has to think of some kind of reason the party cannot simply return the kid home to continue their upbringing. If the child character gets effectively 'adopted' by the party then they can actually work really well as the heart of the group, while also allowing every opportunity to explore the aspects of playing a younger character. As well as force other characters to react after finding themselves responsible for a kid, to some degree. Good RP all around. It just takes slightly more consideration than adult characters, if you want to avoid becoming a meme. Few parties would want a kid in them number due to the obvious danger of death, but if they somehow find one along the way with no other place to stay, they may as well tag along if they so want.

So everyone gathers around the campfire and we introduce our characters formally. Imagine their faces when The Red Mage or now known as Nayru, took their hat off and revealed they were a woman. Some of the players where honestly surprised and some even skeptical of me, saying stuff like: "I bet you she's like 16." Nope she is 28 (The lowest age I've ever played her as is 24 but this was my first time playing as her. If you are curious though, the oldest was 55 and she was still awesome.) "She's probably got that princess bod." Nope, she has quite her fair share of muscles. (I believe I described her having "Athlete Swimmer Physique") "Watch him do the "Senpai" Voice." Dude, really? It'd require a group of shonen fight nonsense loving people to work, but the main HB rule would be "you can do anything with enough hype" The idea being that there's an invisible hype meter (determined by the creativity, storytelling, and general mood of the table) that effects the level of ridiculousness that can happen. No hype, and a punch in combat is just a normal punch, BUT WITH HYPE your punch can have knockback, or even break stone. If done right, fights would have a natural progression going from just room scale fights, to slamming each other through smoke clouds and walls. Would this really work? Probably not, because it's basically a game of imagination with the vaguest rules in place, but damn it imagining the possibilities if it did work, I'm willing to try someday.

The biggest issue I have with D&D is the expectations of what you're trying to find and it seems to often be one of the most reoccurring one. I often try to find games that are of a more serious tone or note and I personally like a campaign with an element of political intrigue, and the ideal of a party being only a band mercenaries rather than one based off "heroics". But in the aspect of inclusivity and positive group dynamic it is often frustrating to have to "put up" with people who forcibly try to bring in their cool recycled anime character doesn't match the theme or setting of the game is clearly unfit for the campaign. I have no issues with anime, I like anime as well, but there is often a time and a place when you should and shouldn't, but the people who play these characters don't seem to know how to turn it off, and that I have a problem with.

You should rec those guys Torg instead, that's what most Japanese players favored through the 80s and 90s It's also why their "fantasy" shows _so often included mecha and starships and lost tech_ (think original final fantasy, Johji Manabe)

Imo its understandable to ban young characters in darker, higher gore games. In those types of games a younger character could make some people uncomfortable

Read the title thought this was going to be something completely else. Finish the video it was nice to talk in a nice calm voice about what it's obviously a problem for some. Keep up the good work.

At the end of the day, if someone at your table is doing something that makes you uncomfortable (whether it's role-playing or otherwise), you should calmly address the issue and offer a compromise. Nothing gets solved by attacking eachother

So it's wrong that my character in DnD is 16? But I'm 15...

I mean... if your character might mature faster (IE: Dragonborn) then you are justified. If your character is not doing anything inappropriate for their age (IE: underaged "Nefarius deeds") Then it's fine If your character ages slower then you are effectivly an elven toddler

actually, nothing in dnd humans are considered adults at 15

Ah. I remember that time when I made a young preteen sorcerer. She got bitten by a giant spider, almost died, got brought back to her village and got grounded by her farmer parents, even if she has brought a chest of platinum from her two adventures for her family to live on. She then was engaged and promised to another villager - to which I changed character afterwards. Medieval times I tell you. Anime characters in D&D man. Its dangerous since it make you either too attached to the character that it might sway the DM to give you favorable dice in order for them to live - or immediately throw something very dangerous at them to further emphasize that anime MC exist only in anime. Anime characters in a table top is also kind of reserved most likely in high to medium fantasy genre's a lot and they can really feel incredibly out of place in certain table top modules and scenarios - like the Shadow of Innsmouth or something. Imagine a Deep one crushing a ten year old bubbly girl with its jaw? It just makes things kind of awkward you know what I mean?

Trust me when I say I have had a player try to play a 14-year-old girl, who looked like she was ten. this was her only trait only one. Did not last that long.

On the “looks 15 but is hundreds of years old” bit, my character in my group’s current campaign is a warforged that’s 150 years old, but due to its background and some memeish role playing, when out of combat has the brain of a hyperactive 5 year old. As they say, looks can be deceiving, and depending on how it’s played, it can be really funny having that juxtaposition, like having a giant 8ft tall murder bot chilling in a corner with crayons and a coloring in book

I’m glad I got to play a girl before. My first character outside of school where I had an awful DM was a human female fighter, an Amazon who didn’t know how to solve a problem she can’t stab. If only I knew it was a mystery based campaign.

Quite frankly whenever there’s a character creator in any game, I usually go for female, thinking that it’s pretty badass seeing women stomping fools into the ground, and also seeing in which areas imma be treated differently. TL:DR, Sometimes RP’ing a chick is awesome

since i lost a big part of my childhood i often end up playing characters that ain't 18 yet. to have a reason to play someone childish to get a part of my childhood back
@rabbidowl12354 жыл бұрын
I'll say this. I personally don't feel comfortable playing children in most DND games because frankly, you are going to see things that no child should see. An ancient red dragon melting a village into the ground as you hear the cries of agony from the villagers screaming with what little is left of their vocal cords tends to not be something that I would subject a child to. If your campaign is built around the idea of player characters being kids I have no problem with it, but if you are creating a child character that will have to see active combat and get blood stained on their hands..it just doesn't sit right with me. To talk about the whole aging slower thing, I think that is different, their mind is still maturing at a normal rate, and if it isn't then I wouldn't allow it. To sum it up, if you are actively going "yeah I want to throw a child into a situation where they might have to hold the fate of thousands of creatures in their hands and the only way to save them is by slaughter" then I just..I mean you do you, but personally, that idea is really bleak and I would only consider if the campaign is based around a heavy horror theme and even then I would hesitate.

Personally as a dm i definitely lean to having mostly important male npcs. i will use the occasional female but i hate doing the voices for them haha. hence why as a player i only play male because i love doing voices
@daltonrazgaitis33183 жыл бұрын
point i was getting to is. it makes sense for most dudes to just play males and in general i havent seen any who can do justice to female characters. sam regal in critical role is a good example of it done well enough. but his character is my least favorite in the season for being kinda of single note
