Something fun to know about the River Spirit with the trash thorn. Apparently Miyazaki the film's director loves to volunteer in his home town to pick up trash and clean the local river. When he first started doing it they fished out dumped playground equipment and even bicycles from it. So a fun tidbit about his life inserted into the film.

There is one thing I always find amusing. You tell the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood' and no one asks "How do grandmother and Red Survive so long in the Wolf's stomach?" or "Why put stones into the Wolf's stomach and sew him back up if he is already laying there sleeping with his belly cut open. Just kill him." or "How did the Big Bad Wolf survive having his belly cut open in the first place?" But people watch 'Spirited Away' or 'My neighbour Totoro' and people want an explanation for everything.

Yes! I couldn't agree more! I really think it has to do with the familiarity with the story. Here in Europe we hear the Little Red Riding Hood story since we were little kids 😋

@@ptthatswhatshesaid It's just people usually don't question the old fairy tales. Some of Miyazaki's movies, like 'Spirited Away' or 'My neighbour Totoro' are fairy tales. But because it's more recent we tend to overlook this detail and think they are the kind of Fantasy, where everything should be explained. We also never ask where the mirror in Snow White came from and so on.

Oh, Lucy is so primed to have the rug pulled out from under her with the grounded realism, stark depth and emotional rawness of Grave Of The Fireflies, following that up with the ecological wonder and spiritual fantasy of Princess Mononoke.

As much as I love Princess Mononoke (probably my favorite of Ghibli catalogue), but I'd do something more light-hearted after Grave of the Fireflies like My Neighbor Totoro or Porko Rosso. But Princess Mononoke is a must watch for anyone getting into these movies. It's violence, adult themes, and environmentalist message just makes it something truly special and unique.

The family isn't driving a 'very good Japanese car'. Their car is German, specifically an Audi A4 1.8T, a compact sedan from the mid-nineties. You can see the Audi logo on the car's front grill and on the rear trunk lid. In Japan, Audi was considered an executive luxury vehicle.

Fun one, D&L! Many of the Studio Ghibli stories are simply charming. But they also often have a sense of danger to them in a fairy tale sort of way. My personal favorites are My Neighbor Totoro and Ponyo, but there are many that I think you might enjoy. Even if you decide not to react to more anime, you should try a few more of them just for fun. There is a wide variety of anime… How sexual they might be is typically based on target audience and format etc… Obviously stuff aimed at teen boys is going to be more sexual in regards to females… Stuff made for TV will likely be tamer than direct home releases etc… Some are made for more adult audiences… Some are made for kids… Anime is just another way to make movies/shows… They probably are aimed more at a younger audience in general, but there is probably a wider demographic in Japan than western animated films/shows… Same with Manga… Here are a few recommendations (sorry if this gets kinda long, feel free to skim for the titles): I’d recommend pretty much every Ghibli film to watch, but be careful about copyright if you react to them. Perfect Blue is a cool psychological thriller, although I will warn that there is some strong sexual aspects in parts, although it’s not the focus of the film… Millennium Actress is a really cool film too… It’s about some people interviewing an old actress, but then from that it mixes with her past and the movies she was in… Everything blending together in a really interesting way. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (may be jumped or fell through time, I forget… Something like that) is a really fun anime movie too, I think… You can get a vague idea about it from the title lol. The Castle of Cagliostro (a Lupin III movie) is a really fun caper movie, starring the master thief, Lupin III… There are many fun movies and series about him, but this is one of the better ones… I think it was worked on by the director of this film too, shortly before starting studio Ghibli… Macross Plus is a great watch too, I think… I think it has a short series version and a movie version… I think both are roughly the same in content… I think it’s just either 4 or so episodes or you can watch a version where it’s all cut together… Kinda sci fi Top Gun vibes, but also involves a crazy AI pop star and an amazing soundtrack. It’s not essential, but knowing the story of the original Macross series adds a bit of extra context (the English release being named Robotech: The Macross Saga… Or something like that… The English release is weird because the people who bought the rights wanted more episodes, so they edited two other different anime onto the end >_

A Silent Voice is a good, powerful anime film for newbies, as it doesn't have all the weird offputting "elements" anime is well known for. Shoya Ishida, a boy who bullied Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf girl in elementary school is ostracized and develops immense guilt, shame and self hatred from the incident. As a teenager in high school who suffers from social anxiety and depression, he decides to take a path of redemption to atone for his sins by reaching out to Shoko.

My personal favorite of the Gibbli Studios films is Howl's Moving Castle. Strongly recommended. It's a fantastical romance. Oh, and ads he said, Anime just means animated. The Japanese don't discriminate between film and animated. There are movies like Perfect Blue, which could have been filmed. It was only animated because of budget reasons. It's a suspense film about the stresses of working in the film industry. If it had been a live action American film it could have won the Oscar award that year.

Studio Ghibli makes some AMAZINGLY beautiful anime and they all tend to be kid-friendly. However, I would highly recommend you watch something like A Silent Voice or Your Name to feel the real power behind anime. Or if you want to stay in the Ghibli universe, try Howl's Moving Castle, which I think is less kid-oriented. what you feared was anime is called Hentai; some anime has inclusions of risqué bits and bobs they collectively call "fan service", and you have to be able to tolerate that to enjoy the anime (I will, if I have to, and especially if the story warrants it); but that's by no means all, or even most, anime; it's very diverse and full of different genres and tastes; you can't ever go wrong with Studio Ghibli, that's where I started! my favourite show, Demon Slayer, has virtually no fan service; for another anime movie, try Your Name

Just some clarification for you...most anime is not "sexy" per-se. There are many different anime genres and some may include "fan service" (sexy characters and situations, but not actual sex). This may just be one episode in an otherwise tame anime. It is called "fan service" for a reason - it is just there as a nod to the horny teens. You can often skip those episodes with no loss to the plot. Sometimes you'll find sexy, embarrassing situations in romance, comedy and slice-of-life anime but they never go past a certain line. These genres are mainly targeted towards girls, after all. A boy accidentally falling on top of a cute girl resulting in an accidental kiss, a hand where it shouldn't be or a face somewhere naughty is a pretty common trope. It may amount to wish-fulfillment for some viewers - but in a pretty innocent way. There is also "hentai" (roughly translated as "perverted") anime that rarely end up on mainstream streaming sites. You'd have to intentionally scour the internet for those. A few sneak through onto mainstream streaming platforms but it is rare.

Japanese is an interesting language because the written language has a significant part that was adopted from Chinese, 'kanji' (lit. "Han characters"). Kanji commonly form the roots or stems of japanese words, representing their meaning, but are also used for writing personal names. Most kanji have multiple pronunciations, or readings, often a Chinese one and native/original Japanese one, sometimes multiple variations of these, including special pronunciations that are only used in personal names. So, her name 千尋 is pronounced 'Chihiro', which literally means something like "a thousand armspans", but the first character of her name 千 by itself is just a word, 'thousand', and hence is pronounced by itself as 'Sen', rather than something like just 'chi-', because that's how the number and word for 1000 is pronounced in Japanese (which derives from its pronunciation in Chinese, hence “sen” is its On reading).. When Yubaba steals Chihiro's name, she leaves just the 'Sen' part, 千, as her nickname, and this is part of her magic to attempt to induce Chihiro into forgetting her (almost) previous life, and identity. Hence, the full native title of the movie, 千と千尋の神隠し, 'Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi", lit. 'The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro'. It almost suggests a littler girl's kidnapping, and being so sudden it's like she vanished by magic, and forced to work in order to live, but also like it's two different people, Chihiro and this Sen, like she has to choose which person she's going to be.

Btw, the first anime *I* ever saw was in college at an anime club, and was about hot chicks fighting giant monsters and spending most of the movie scantily-clad, and even getting naked at a couple points. And it was AMAZING and still one of my personal favorites! Anime definitely *includes* a lot of adult-oriented.. genres and sensibilities, and this cultural difference from US and much western animation was very liberating, because Japanese culture certainly has many things considered taboo in it, but also a greater willingness to explore a lot of those quite casually, in both anime and manga. It really highlighted how tame American animation tended to be in general. This doesn't mean anime lacks rather wholesome subjects, stories, and themes, as you can see here with Miyazaki's work.

As I understand it, a lot of the characters and spirits are heavily inspired by things like Japanese supernatural myths, Shintoism. No-Face is one of the more abstract ones, and in most analyses of the film, what he represents seems to be the most subject to interpretation. My own interpretation is that No-Face reflect and amplify however he's treated, towards whoever is treating him that way. - Sen treats him with kindness and generosity, so he tries to do the same by giving her the bath tokens - Frog and the other workers treat him with thinly-veiled greed, and he does the same eventually devouring them - in the end, Zeniba treats him with kindness as well, praise, and offers him a place and a role with simple work and he seems to have found the best, healthiest place for himself That he has no *face*, and wears a mask, all seem important, like he has no expression of his own, yet still appearing as if he was just "other people", like a personification of karma-how you treat others eventually comes back to you, and really seems like Miyazaki making social commentary of some kind.. Sen/Chihiro seems to be the first to realize this, whether subconsciously or intuitively. She says, "I think the bathhouse is making him sick", hence the most helpful thing to all is getting him out of there. There's a lot of clearly symbolic imagery in the film, which there often is with Miyazaki.

I do think English version is kind of misleading people in some scenes, and doesn’t match what the characters said and even meaning. In which Haku trying to make a deal with yubaba, yubaba is actually saying something like “then what about you, even if I tear you apart?” So some dark theory believed that why haku said that don’t turn the head back is as soon as chihiro is back to her world, he’s gonna be teared apart according to the deal, that’s why that scene is cut off after yubaba said “even if I tear you apart”
