The argument between Luffy & Usopp is honestly one of the most realistic ones in all of anime imo. It perfectly shows how something like that can easily get out of hand, especially when both parties are extremely passionate about the situation. & then you have Sanji kicking Luffy and Zoro standing on business about the whole situation which are 2 of my favorite moments from them still. They trust Luffy’s decisions fully, and if Luffy starts to waver, who can they trust? So we can’t let that happen. They made sure Luffy stuck to his code. Remember, “We aren’t playing pirates.”

But it does shows Usopp's point that the Going Merry is more than a ship. That's saddest part about the argument: Luffy, and Usopp deep down, know the ship can't sail anymore, but its still an important part of the crew and as they'll learn latter on has sentience. While they need to get a new ship, neither know how to part with her, which leads to this fight. It's like a debate between two owners and a beloved pet that's at the end of its life, with one willing to keep it alive despite its own pain, while the other is knows its time has come, but comes off too cold about the situation.

Luffy vs Usopp is still to this day one of if not the best fights in the series from a purely emotional perspective. Many people, myself included, see Water 7 as the first true test for the Straw Hats as a crew, and this is a major part of why.

This arc is so impactful With an anime where the main crew is basically a family, we feel the impactful pain when we lose three members almost simultaneously (merry at death’s door, robin going away, usopp parting with the others) And yet, it doesn’t give us time to sit still and mourn, as more events keep happening Iceburg is shot, Franky returns for revenge, Aqua Laguna is coming!

Eh, they all have different dynamics going on. Whitebeard and his crew were perfectly ok with Ace trying to actively murder the captain daily for weeks. The Strawhats run things more like the Whitebeards, where there is more of a family dynamic, where other crews may run it more like a gang or business. I don’t think there’s one blanket way or doing things

Man I love this show. This is really where everything kicks off, and truly shows what an amazing story One Piece can be that sets it apart from others like it. 16:25-16:35 I think it’s for his sake too not just Luffy’s. Zoro doesn’t show his emotions on his sleeve like the rest of the crew. Here he’s saying thinking about and talking about Usopp is too painful for him. At least that’s what I got out of it.

I love this batch of episodes so much. Franky is one of my favorites before an event happens (leaving it vague as not to spoil), Ussop vs Luffy is one of my favorite fights, if not my favorite fight, Robin plot and how Sanji is always out trying to find her, Iceberg plot twist, and how emotional it is if you think about it. Luffy had a good time exploring the place, then got a lot of money, heard about the news with the Going Mary, then money got stolen, Robin left, Ussop got beaten up, had to fight Ussop, heard Iceberg got shot, and where I am in the video, fighting the shipwright. Imagine the emotional whiplash, anger, and depression he must be feeling. And not just him but the rest of the crew. But because he is the captain he has to try to keep himself together

So the average win count after this episode is 31.841 then 6 repeating, the last time I had done this it was around 27 per episode, really goes to show how good water 7 and skypeia and such truly are.

Everyone lists Going Merry itself as being a part of the crew as the biggest reason why Usopp was acting the way he was when he learned Luffy was going to replace i. I will never argue against it because it IS the biggest reason. However, I think there's another contributing factor that never gets brought up in the series (from what I can tell) nor in discussions - WHO it was that gave the Straw Hats that ship: Kaya, all the way back in Syrup Village. I personally think because it's a gift from Kaya that Going Merry has extra significant meaning to Usopp.

Water 7, in my opinion, is the first point that the anime is better than the manga. Making us dwell in the details, the music, the sadness of the crew. Some of the best most memorable bits of OP are coming. Theres a reason this one man empire is 25 years long. So much goodness everywhere. Also, Franky being voiced by Mr 2 is awsome. I love Franky, he’s pretty high up on my Straw Hat crew list.

Um Actually, the Merry totally was just given to Luffy. At the very least it was given to the Straw Hats, which Usopp wasnt a member of yet when they got the boat. He wasnt even present when Kaya gave them the boat. He was invited to join the crew directly AFTER she gave them the boat. I dont understand why so many people think Usopp has ANY claim to that boat, literally Nami was more in the right to steal it when she went back to Cocoyashi villiage than he does to say its HIS and start a whole fight over it. It became partly his after he was a member of the crew, but its still dominantly Luffy's boat since he's the captain.

So fun little worldbuilding fact to ease the pain from these eoisode, remember how it was stated in Long Ring Long Land that the water level there drastically drops for 1 day every year and the nomads there used it to travel nirmally submerged land bridge between the islands? Yeah that's what's causing the massive Aqua Laguna tsunami to hit Water 7

8:56 - 14:32 What makes this scene so tragic isn't the fact that they are fighting, it is that they are fighting for such a pointless reason. Luffy was going to to get a new ship, so even if he didn't have a duel with Usopp the latter could still have the ship. However, due to Usopp's pride he demands a duel with Luffy for the ship, which Luffy accepts only out of respect for the former. When Luffy screams at Usopp after the latter's defreat, it isn't because Usopp couldn't back up his boast, but instead due to his sadness and frustration in having to fight his former best friend over the now defunct Merry. Truly a sad scene in the story and one of the lowest points in both Luffy's and Usopp's lives.

Ussopp VS Luffy is the most painful thing in the anime/manga! But sadly the most realistic. In a pirate crew the captains word is law going against it can't be allowed. Now yes if the captain is going overboard than the crew can intervene but Luffy decision wasn't met with resistance from the rest, just Ussop. Getting rid of Merry is a hard choice but sailing in it will lead to their deaths. On the other hand I get Ussop's feeling to. It's rare to have a fight between friends be this balanced out.

Yes Luffy vs Usopp is an amazing sad part of the story. For once 2 main characters splitting up makes sense and doesn’t feel forced. But also… FRRAAAAANKYYY is heeeere! God I love this guy so much

Ah yes, the pain! Not a one-two punch but a longform one two three punch because Usopp leaves the crew, fights his heart out against Luffy and then Robin leaves in mysterious circumstances too! For the former it makes sense both ways, Usopp is in denial but he's connected to the ship: they joined at the same time, it came from Kaya and he gets the feeling that if the Merry's not strong enough to sail with them then how could he? As a result of the argument though something else more uncharacteristic occurs: Luffy stops smiling for a while too. But oh boy, what comes next

Mad respect to Usopp for that fight. I didn’t think he’d get one shotted, but I thought Luffy would take him down very quickly So for him, after being beaten to near-death twice, to put up such a spectacular fight was really impressive and hyped. It goes to show that Usopp would probably be a pretty good fighter if he had more prep time + distance in his fights…but the Strawhats are just not a crew that has that kind of luxury a lot of the time sadly

I am so passionate about the Luffy/Usopp fight As someone with some experience in creative writing I can tell you that arguments between friends or allies are HARD to write. So many writers have to dumb the characters down or go with badly done misunderstandings to make it work (think of most of the 3rd act break up tropes), and it can be hard to juggle making it feel organic without having only one character be ‘the bad guy’, but the Luffy vs Usopp fight was a masterpiece Neither character broke away from their established characters, instead their motives and beliefs drove the fight. And it was an argument that was hundreds of episodes in the making with the way we know how Usopp feels about the Merry, his abandonment issues, and his unconscious lack of respect of Luffy - viewing him more as a best friend than a captain. We also know Luffy is not sentimental and can’t handle complex issues. He solves his friends problems by fighting (Nami, Chopper, Vivi, etc.), and now there’s no fight, there’s nothing he can he can fight to fix Merry or to fix Usopp’s problems and make him feel better, so he wants to move on and move past the issue quickly. He also wants to minimise the issue to spare Usopp’s feelings, which only makes him angrier. Luffy is arguably in the right, but he handles it badly. They escalate and say stupid things, and even realise they’ve said stupid things right after they’ve done it, like real people would. Even Sanji getting angry and wading in was impactful, since we know he’s also close to Usopp and is a bit more emotionally mindful than Luffy. It was uncomfortable to watch, but absolutely masterfully done. I think it’s also the first time we see Luffy ‘fail’ as a captain since Vivi scolded him on Drum Island with how poorly he handled the situation. It highlights nicely that even though he is loved and respected, there are still things and skill that he is missing to be a good leader. There are flaws that he still needs to work on to become Pirate King, and not ones he would have thought of himself or that are as simple as ‘get stronger’
