One of the biggest wins for me was how they used Isabella s lullaby through the show. The tone changes on happy scenes , tense scenes , gives you hope, gives you sorrow. And when you find out later it wasn’t even her original song but Leslie’s and just how they use it in the background and how Isabella herself uses it was something I was really amazed it

I feel like I need to say this- in this show, I sobbed so hard I had an asthma attack. Once when Norman left, and then twice at the last episodes. When Ray pulled his suicidal bs and Emma screamed at him, and then with Mama Isabella's life story. My lungs are weak and my emotions are weaker.

I cried so hard on the last two episodes. Seeing the flashback of the children training and their determination for this escape made me BAWL my eyes out. Literally, non-stop crying. There was just something so beautiful about their will to live, even at the risk of dying. And when Isabella discovered that Ray is her one and only biological child. Damn. Mississippi River worth of tears right there.

I've been trying to get my friends to watch it and they all are bored right up until the twist and then they freak out and binge the whole thing in one day. Personally I Don't think the mom is an evil person. I definitely think she's done some evil things and lost a lot of her humanity, but she genuinely thinks that in this world, the best thing she can do is provide a healthy happy life for these children before they're devoured. She didn't become a mom purely for her own sake, but because she wanted to protect kids like her from being miserable and learning the truth only to be subject to the cold reality that things are beyond saving that she faced. All in all, wonderfully deep character and show. Can't wait for season 2.

I agree to an extent but then theres the scene right after Emma refuses to become a momma and she acts very aggressively telling her to go ahead and sit and wait till she gets killed and eaten or whatever, that for me falls outside of your description. I think I covered why she may have acted that way in the video but all the same for me I felt it added even more depth to her character potentially

A thing I noticed in the scene where the kids play tag with Krone: The fact that Emma, who was carrying two kids with her, got caught but Ray and Norman, who were acting alone, didnt reinforces the notion that they would have a much better chance at survival if they left everyone behind. I really like how it literally gives form to the moral dilemma the three are facing by using the game of tag which is specifically framed as a sort of simulation for their actual escape.

Isabelle is actually my favorite character. She truly loves the children, but circumstances have forced that love to be twisted and perverted. She’s trying to cram a lifetime of happiness into 6-12 short years. She’s trying to help them live as long and as happily as possible. In her mind, if Ray, Norman, and Emma succeeded, she would be replaced and her kids (relative) happiness would be jeopardized. I mean, imagine the house being RUN by someone like Krone. That’s why she’s the ultimate Mother, know for raising the best quality children. She’s motivated by actual motherly love, rather than purely survival or rank. But, her motivation is also selfish. She didn’t escape, because she didn’t trust the children around her. She didn’t trust Leslie. Seeing Emma and Ray escape together BECAUSE they trusted one another proves that she COULD have escaped. She’s been justifying her life path by saying it was necessary, that she had no other choice. Now she had incontrovertible proof that she was wrong. She didn’t want them to escape because it would invalidate every single justification she has made to herself. But at the same time, once they’re gone, and she knows that she’s going to be killed, she can now allow herself to love them as she’s meant to-if only for one night. She can be proud of them and worry about their safety and pray for them. Her story is actually tragic and beautiful and in the end she learns the truth. I love Isabelle, because it’s not malevolence or evil that makes her so scary. She’s a mom. Therefore, she’s unstoppable.

i mean i don’t think it wasn’t 100% cause she didn’t trust Leslie but also because there weren’t kids like Emma Ray and Norman even if she did make it with them her mom wouldn’t have stopped for a second to reflect on there decision’s they probably would have ruined the plan completely but besides that isabella seemed like the only well skilled kid who actually had a chance at escaping she couldn’t have made a team because she didn’t have that friendship who would have believed her and wouldn’t someone have snitched then they would have confronted her or killed Leslie Earlier which would have foiled with her being able to ask anyone for help

This anime. I binged it in one night, after saying "one more episode" after each one. It was just that brilliant. The fact each episode brought you to an emotional investment then left a cliffhanger each and every time was brilliant. I loved it. This has to be one of the few anime that I genuinely felt fear. Gore is not fear. Anxiety is. This anxiety knew exactly how to build anxiety. I hate children so much ususally, but this anime made me care. That's a pretty big feat. It's not flawless, but it is amazing. It's just rare an Anime makes me feel actual fear. But this did. I loved the cinematography and the claustraphobic feel. The feeling that someone was watching them all the time. The recurring motifs of songs and symbolism. I loved it. This Anime is a great example of how emotionally impacting animation can be. The best part of those CGI longshots is the sound design. Listen closely and you can work out who's footsteps it is. Is it the boots of a female character? Are they tall or short? That tell you whether it's a child or an adult. Brilliant. And holy fuck I thought she broke her neck, not her leg. I was watching it at 3am and just froze.

Anime watchers: I wonder what’s beyond the wall Me: laughs in manga reader

Okay this is going to be a really long comment, but this is coming from someone who's been a fan of the manga since the beginning (Well not sure if starting reading when chapter 3 came out counts as "fan from the beginning") But the point is i want to talk about this series and how much the anime changed from the manga. The anime made Emma Norman and Ray say what they want to do once they leave the house. This wasn't in the manga, but it was good foreshadowing of their future in the story. The anime removed the inner monologue for characters like Norman Ray Krone and Isabella. This is a bad move on the anime's part cause it really helped expand their characters though Krone's monologue however ended up having her talking to her doll (I'll talk about that part later) But Isabella's monologue really helped understand her and feel sorry for her. On to Krone's doll that the anime decided to include like i said above, the doll was added so Krone wouldn't have much inner monologue. But this inclusion was both well done and sad as Anime Wins said when Krone was about to be killed. When i watched that part i started crying really hard. It was both well done and sad. So there were some parts in the manga that were either removed or changed in the anime. But one scene in the manga that was removed in the anime was a scene (Well it was a flashback) where Norman started worrying about the escape plan cause of the inclusion of Sister Krone and it was at that moment where Norman started to think there was a traitor. I'm upset they didn't include that scene. Scenes from the manga that ended up getting changed are: How Ray got out (Spoiler alert Don didn't knock the door down. In fact it was much funnier in the manga) the picture Ray took of Emma and Norman was a lot more heartwarming in the manga (And this still bothers me) And the scene where Emma and Ray make it clear they're gonna let Norman get shipped where the three of hugged was much more clear in the manga. However there are some scenes that i feel the anime did better than the manga. One of those scenes was where Norman asked Isabella if she was happy. To be honest the face Isabella made in the manga, hearing that question, made it come off as she was surprised to be asked such a question. The anime however made her react in shock and you could tell she was not happy. I also love how the anime included the Leslie's Song (Also fun fact Leslie was suppose to sing it himself not play a guitar) by having Isabella hum it at the first episode and then hearing Ray hum it as well later was a great touch to foreshadow them being mother and son. Anime only watchers probably didn't make the connection, but when i heard Leslie's Song in the anime i knew it right there what Isabella was singing and then hearing Ray sing it later was a great. Emma's evil face was great in the anime as it was the manga. Like i can't pick between these two there both fantastic. I know a lot of you are looking forward to season 2 in 2020 but from what i heard there's a chance that it might diverge from the manga. I hope it's not too big of a change where it becomes like Akame ga Kill or Soul Eater. And i pray to god for it to not end up like the final season of Tokyo Ghoul where they just put 10 chapters into one episode and also removing a lot of important details. When i heard that the anime was going to air on Toonami i was very excited for everyone's reaction (I mainly look at Toonami's Tumblr) and seeing everyone's reaction to it was so much and funny cause i knew what was going to happen next and i'm glad they like it. Mine thoughts? Well besides the scenes that were removed and some were changed and getting rid of everyone's inner monologue, i enjoyed the anime and some of the neat additions that were included. And i look forward to seeing how they do season 2

This anime is brilliant. The fact that they filled with me such hatred for sister krone and Isabella and then with a few simple scenes destroying it is absolutely amazing. Isabella letting them go, back story with Leslie, covering their tracks and not reporting them. Sister krones backstories, flashbacks and last moments filled me with sympathy for her and seeing she died actually made me sad. Norman’s death actually killed me, but I’m hoping he some how escaped. The anime shows the fact that sometimes you are trapped and will need to sacrifice things is what I think it’s trying to tell us but who know. I know Manga readers are laughing at this but personally I don’t want to ruin the story since I love the twists.

The first season of the anime finishes at the end of Chapter 37 of the manga. Season 2 will start in chapter 38. I can't wait for it to come out in January 2021!

One thing I wish the anime hadn't removed from the manga was Isabella's last line after the children had escaped which was her saying how she wished she could've loved the children normally, this says a lot about her character considered the life that she is forced to live she still is humane and wishes for a better life on herself and her children

Norman lets out a gasp of joy and relief, to which he covered up, because what might have happen is that 5. Ray heard the gasp, which tells him Norman is up to something to save everyone. Ray then curses Norman's strategist mind.

So I binged the series and I didn't know my little sister was watching with me and when I rewatched it my sister came up behind me humming Isabella's lullaby (which scared the shit out of me) before stopping and saying, "Ray knew he would die. He said he had to survive in the first episode!" And she got really proud of herself. Now I don't know weather to be scared of this 5 year old or join forces with her. I should also add that this girl is quiet as hell. You'll be sitting there and then you start hearing humming and you turn around and there's this 5 year old who has brought you a knife that you got for Christmas but it's unsheathed. She's scary.

The reason why Norman knew about Ray's plan to set himself on fire was because he kept saying that he was going to get Emma and Norman out of there instead of saying he was going to get the three of them to escape, but apart from that he found the oil cans hidden behind Ray's bed. And well, he's Norman, he's always ten steps ahead.

Remember when Ray said that he remembered from when he was a fetus? He said he remembered a lullaby. And Ray’s mom is Isabella who was singing that lullaby when she was pregnant with him. Then him humming the song when Isabella finds out he remembers it leads into her telling him the secret behind the Home. Just a peak detail many people might not notice.
