Why do you let them blunder your pieces?
@chadmacgargle5311 Жыл бұрын
It's probably the refresh rate on the screen. We react to the sound not the visual. The electronic image is constantly not there, your brain assembles a consistent picture for you but over and over again you're not actually seeing the board because it isn't there. Where as the sound is consistent. The brain is trained to react within expectation on the cue of the "click" you blundered because you didn't see it, you didn't see it because it wasn't there. What you "saw" was what you expected to see. Can't play chess if you don't know the last move.

Another great podcast as usual. I think what makes this podcast unique is the people behind the players. One advantage of interviewing an established player like Anish is that he's both had a lot of experience, good and bad, but also he's given a lot of thought to many things. There's a frankness about your guests who reveal more about themselves, and we're not bogged in the middle of the chess details that only chess experts would find interesting (this was the rabbit hole that Jorden was going down, but he did a some good comments too). Anish is also one of the funniest GMs out there such as when he was discussing the brief fallout between him and Jorden. Cristian was able to tie this to Fabi's own falling out with Rustam. This is unlike tennis where a player can lose their physical abilities but still have a great deal of knowledge about tennis (see Lendl with Murray or Goran with Djokovic). It's a small community that shares the same people and unlike tennis, where you top players hide their personal issues from public scrutiny, the podcast has really honest emotions. I can relate (to a degree) what Fabi is going through where somehow someone you were close with doesn't want to be together, and how he doesn't fully grasp it and yet how hurtful it is, and how you end up having to push past that and move on with life. And while I enjoy the silliness of Hikaru's podcasts, there's an emotional core in the best of the interviews. This isn't to say there aren't humorous moments (see the interview with Vidit and Ganguly) or even harrowing ones (Aronian). You just don't see that level of vulnerability with other sports figures that want to keep their weaknesses private.

That was supremely interesting about Magnus’s preparation and the players’ relationships with their team. Also really appreciate Fabi being so candid about his coach. The so called 'restriction' on van Foreest is actually pretty common in the private sector, particularly where intellectual property/knowledge work is involved. It's called a "non-compete" agreement or clause and legally binds a current or former employee to confidentiality and from competing against an employer for a specific time after employment ceases. It's perfectly legal and actually a smart move for Magnus if he can get it but remember it's totally up to van Foreest and any of Magnus' seconds whether they want to accept those terms in their contract (and, yes, you always have to have a contract so that there is no misunderstanding as described by your guests). Great episode, guys, thanks!
