This performance as I have found out aired on the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson back on November 11, 1986. This is a brilliant live performance from Queen Anita of "Sweet Love". The vocals are just superb!! You will not find another televised live solo performance as good as this one. Anita has so much soul and passion, and she expresses those characteristics in every word she sings with her trademark body rocking and gestures. She shows and truly makes love through her music. Great, great singer!!! This is REAL singing here! Oh yes!! Love her!! She is one of a kind, a precious gem! My favorite female singer of all-time! Thanks so much for uploading this classic video. Anita!! Greatness personified### Living Legend #### "The Songstress" Queen of Smooth Jazz Queen of Quiet Storm

Anita Baker is celebrating her 66th birthday today, January 26, 2024. She is an American singer-songwriter known for her soulful ballads, particularly from the height of the Quiet Storm period in the 1980s. Starting her career in the late 1970s with the funk band Chapter 8, Baker released her first solo album, The Songstress, in 1983. In 1986, she rose to fame following the release of her Platinum-selling second album, Rapture, which included the Grammy-winning single "Sweet Love". As of 2017, Baker has won eight Grammy Awards and has four Platinum albums, along with two Gold albums. Baker is a contralto with a wide range of octaves. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on January 26, 1958

@azeryahu99147 жыл бұрын
Rodney Davis well that's because she's not a Contralto. She's most likely a mezzo. They often get mistaken for Contraltos because of their ability to hit low notes.

Azeryahu great analysis. you are correct
@tvgebt78697 жыл бұрын
Azeryahu I don't know the weight of her voice screams alto but you could be right.... maybe the average alto couldn't hit that note clean but singers of her caliber are anything but average lol sometimes we forget professional singers are freaks of nature , for example philip bailey from earth wind and fire is a baritone but you wouldn't know it from his upper register

Too young to retire. Miss her. Hope she gets the urge to record and perform again. Come Back Anita!
@jeromesmith65637 жыл бұрын
Well, there definitely is hope that our beloved living legend may be reconsidering about completely retiring from the music industry. Anita has scheduled only 3 shows for now, coming up March 2018, all in Florida, which are 3/14 Jacksonville, 3/16 Orlando, and 3/18 at Jazz in The Gardens in Miami. I already have my front row ticket in hand to see her in Jacksonville and I am just thrilled and can not wait! I am really hoping that at least she will keep her mind open to at least do live shows every once in awhile, as she obviously has decided to do for right now.

@@paulfromdonmills Anita started and kicked off her Farewell Tour right here in my hometown , Jacksonville, FL on March 14, 2018. I later saw her that same week at Jazz in The Gardens in Miami. She was sensational at both shows I attended. The rest is history. She has sold out every venue over the past year and a half, a total of over 50 shows. I think she is about to conclude the tour soon. So if you have not yet seen Queen Anita live in concert, you are missing an experience of a lifetime. Legends like her are an absolute MUST to see!!!

Baker teamed with former Chapter 8 bandmate Michael Powell for her wonderful Elektra debut, Rapture, released on March 20, 1986. It was an instant classic that virtually defined adult soul for the next decade and thrust Baker to the forefront of popular music. The first single, "Watch Your Step," was a moderate Soul hit, but it was the catchy follow up ballad, "Sweet Love," that brought across-the-board attention to the album and resulted in Baker winning 1986 Grammy Awards for best R&B Female Vocalist and best R&B Song. A legendary career was cemented with Rapture. The album still sounds great all these years later and Anita Baker remains a part of our lives as an all-time singer supreme.
