Next in my series of A to Z of authors in my bookshelf, is Anita Brookner. An interesting person and writer of Booker prize winning 'Hotel du Lac', her books explore the themes of single, intelligent middle-aged women, their lives and relationships. Here, I'm taking a brief dive into her life and works.

I'd never heard of Anita Brookner. Her having many middle-aged single women protagonists appeals to me. We don't often find that perspective in fiction. Thank you for the video, Ros! 🌻

So glad you've included her. I have many and read them years ago. I do appreciate her. I have one of her fine art history books too

I love Barbara Pym and I immediately thought of her when you spoke of single women of a certain age. I love Miss Read too. Take care of yourself and Tilly. ❤

I’ve only read Hotel du Lac which was a beautifully written book. And the TV adaptation was excellent and one of my favorites. I’ve quite forgotten about her and check out other of her books. She rather reminds me of Joanna Trollope

I think I know what you mean about Joanna Trollope - though her books were mostly about younger women with families, there is that same contemplative quality about being female.

Great video. You sound as if you come from an interesting family. I would love to hear about your artist mother. Not books but I’m sure there are others who would love to hear as well. I’ve read Anita Brookner and as you say her books seem to have similar themes. I quite like her writing style

Thank you! I may show you some of my mother's paintings one day, if I can think of a way of doing that in connection with books!

@@booksfrommybookshelf I would love to see her work. I paint and draw myself but for me it’s a hobby and art history is a major interest.

Didn’t Anna Massey star in a tv production of Hotel du Lac? I don’t remember the details but the atmosphere of the location has lingered. Gently melancholic?

I looked that up on Google. She did star in that production. As an add on, the movie did not get good reviews.

I've never seen that production, but I loved Anna Massey. I still remember her chilling portrayal of Mrs Danvers in the TV production of Rebecca.

& Anna Massey's wonderful portrayal of Lady Laura Kennedy in tv adaptation of Trollope's 'The Pallisers'. 1974-1975. e@@booksfrommybookshelf
