Yesterday, we had the great honor of hosting the incomparable Anna Karina. While she was in the neighborhood, Anna made a stop in our film closet to reminisce about her groundbreaking work with Godard, acting for Agnès Varda in CLEO FROM 5 TO 7, her affection for Charlie Chaplin, and much more.

seeing her talking like this after all those years brings tears to my eyes, especially when she talked about the short film she did with Godard for Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7, it was the most lovely part in the film, I will never forget that little white dress and those big beautiful eyes. She is truly the Queen of The New Wave.

I almost got to see her in person twice. She was booked for a Film Festival in 2015 or 2016 in Portugal, specifically a viewing of Pierrot le Fou, and it was cancelled. A couple of years later, in early 2019, she was supposed to come for another viewing of Pierrot le Fou but when everyone got there, we were shown a little hand-written note by Anna, saying she had been advised by her doctor not to travel. A couple of months later, in december, she passed. I was so devastated, especially since I almost got to be in her presence… But I’m still deeply appreciative that I get to watch her work and interviews and little gems like this. Forever a fan of Anna. RIP.

That's incredibly unfortunate. I was lucky to see her in Los Angeles for a restoration screening of BAND OF OUTSIDERS at the TCM Film Festival in 2016. During the Q&A, her effortless charm and flirtatious wit permeated the room, as not even interviewer Ben Mankiewicz could resist smiling. I even hugged and kissed her after the screening, and it was the only time I was ever genuinely nervous about meeting someone. That same week, she appeared at either the New Beverly Cinema or Silent Movie Theatre in Hollywood, which, sadly, I could not attend.

In Cahiers du Cinéma he has rated these Criterion released films masterpieces: Wild Strawberries, Ugetsu, Ivan the Terrible, 400 Blows, Hiroshima Mon Amour. There's probably plenty of others but these are the ones I could find. Many are rated 3 (on a scale of 0 to 4) but these are all the fours I could find. He even rated Bande à Part a 3, haha.
@squirtreynoldscinema

Thought I'd do a little update with the other 4 stars and 3 stars (2nd highest) that he rated, which may or not be released by Criterion 4 stars: Man of the West, Vertigo, The Quiet American, Rio Bravo, Two Rode Together. 3 stars: Brink of Life, Dreams (Bergman), Deux hommes du Manhattan (interesting, since it's regarded as bottom tier Melville, but this was before the New Wave clique started hating Melville and actually liked him, especially Godard), Middle of the Night, Les Cousins, The Tarnished Angels, Touch of Evil. Also, he has ranked Louis Malle films at "don't bother watching", since the Cahiers group disliked him. Elevator to the Gallows is rated as a piece of shit by Godard lmaoo

@D2 E2 plz, he was just a jealous ass bitch and it ain't about Godard, calling Orson Welles a hoax, criticising Michelangelo Antonioni he was just a insecure and jealous butthurt director who started bitching about almost anyone who was a better filmmaker. Even Orson Welles criticized Godard but even he said his talents as a director can't be denied. Not like Ingar 'If anyone is a better filmmaker than you and your ego is hurt so much that your ass starts burning of jealousy and your so butthurt you start bitching about them like a 14 yr old kid' Bergman. I am not spreading hate against him but that was the truth. He himself was a pretentious director, and I know you're probably thinking am some asshole who throws that word every 5 minute but am not, I have used that word after lot of consideration. And no hate to you I just get triggered when anyone says read Bergman's criticism, he just a jealous bitch who loved to bitch and moan. And the statements he said about Godard, subjectively speaking, that's exactly, EXACTLY the words I use to describe his films. Once again brother no offense or hate to you but I hate when people say Bergman's criticism was valid, it wasn't.
