My father was abandoned on a London street corner at 5 years of age because his parents could not care for him. He was housed by an orphanage. At 16 he lied about his age and went to war in the navy. The taught him how to look after himself. Getting sun-burnt was a court-martial offence, so he never let it happen. They taught him how to avoid stupid consequences by encouraging him to take responsibility for his actions. His ship was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank. He could not swim but he survived. He moved to New Zealand and led a productive life. He worked many jobs, some Management. He smoked most of his life, giving it up in his 70's. He never had a sweet tooth. He always ate meat and plenty of vegetables. He died at 88 of pneumonia after a bad infection. He was dealt a rough hand early on (like a lot of people from his time - so much for privilege) but all I ever saw him do was smile, be helpful, work hard, learn (he loved reading books), as well as look after and take responsibility for himself and his family. Near the end he visited a Doctor who told him he did not exist because he was not to be found on any computer database. The reason is because he had not seen a Doctor in over 50 years. That is how well he looked after his diet and health. At 72 he he asked me, "How many?". Not knowing what he was talking about I said; "15". He got down on the floor and did 15 push ups. He had every excuse, but would accept none of them and insisted on acting responsibly. When he died an insurance company (mostly) paid for his funeral. He wasn't rich but he was extremely generous and owed nobody anything. An example anybody can follow!

Maori theatrics. Best left to them to play out their dramas in singing dancing with te reo and aggressively asserting their warrior status. Why would we non-maori subject ourselves to the Maori agenda of separatism.self governance and demands for dominance and privilege. Time to settle whether New Zealand is one nation one government one set of laws operating as a democracy or an oligarchy ruled by elite maori. Sounds like we need a referendum.

My g-g-grandfather was born to a European father and Maori mother in 1838 before the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. I have some inherited Maori land interests (tino rangatiratanga - Article 2) but other than that I do not consider myself to have special rights or obligations that are different to any other citizens. In particular, I don't believe I have some special right to be a partner in Government (kawanatanga - Article 1) because of my genealogy. Further, I want my public healthcare access prioritized on my personal need - not my ancestry. Yes, I am interested in my genealogy/whakapapa and the history of settlement and war in this country, but I have no interest in contemporary Maori language and culture. I know this viewpoint doesn't fit with the worldview of Te Pati Maori or the Greens, however (like David Seymour) I am just as entitled to my opinion as they are.

When I was training in health during late 1990s, it was always quoted that there was a 10-year difference in death rate between Māori and European. On TVNZ news recently they were quoting a 7-year difference. If both those factors are correct, then a 3 year improvement over a 30 year period is massive. Guess what, there is never ever any mention of that factor.

It's obvious, it's so obvious. And these people in government and university are so narrow focused on everything being racist, they can't see the forest threw the trees. It's called genetics. Europeans have been on an agricultural diet for thousands of years, where as up until a century ago both Maori and Pacific Islanders (decades in their case) where Hunter Gathers. Hunter Gathers are high protein and fat, and low carb. Agricultural is much higher carbs. Maori and Pacific bio chemistry has not adapted to eating a an Agricultural diet. This takes centuries for a race to adapt. In other words education of what they should be eating for the best possible health outcomes. Of course there is exceptions to the rule, not every European is best suited to genetically eat an argiculral diet like myself, my genetic profile is Hunter gather. Poor diet, substances abuse, poor education all lead to the poor statistics. None of them racist. What needs to be done: Education on healthy eating (but that would mean removing big Pharma out of our health system) Reform the education system (it's become bloated and ideological driven and no longer interested in education, hasn't worked for my kids either) Control immigration better (why are we bringing people in from Kenya to be health care assistants, when there are plenty of people in NZ choosing not to work but stay on a benefit. I know many young people who leave school go on a benefit and play online videos games all day) Healths Services where they are needed (they have the stats of where health services are need, build the services there)(we need to be educating the future health professionals in this country instead of trying to import them from overseas. Give people free education if studying to be a healthcare professional that we need, bond them so if they leave the country within a certain period that have to pay back with interest). Nothing should ever be locked away by race, only economic ability.

No indigenous person was ever free or had individual human rights. Unless you were a Chieftain or someone important, you had no rights, no freedom, no opportunity to choose ones own life path. The problem, dear Professor, is one of class, capital and the encounter with modernity. Modernity is the superset encompassing pretty much everything that early contact maori encountered - guns, germs, soldiers, traders, lawyers, missionaries, local officials, legislators, and cops. We're ALL going through it. That was and is The World. The Treaty did not say "the Crown will protect you from the negative effects of contact with modernity". But to listen to the TPB submitters you'd think that there was an open-ended commitment to wrap people in cotton wool, for ever, and all failures to do so are a treaty breach. This is the "my icecream dropped on the ground, BAD PARENTS" argument.

Mr Laws, a great comment, it is a 'waste' of a day really. It's time for all New Zealanders to be grouped together or not, if you're not a Kiwi, please go home (where you came from). The Treaty is a nothing document, are we all Kiwis'/New Zealanders if you're not in that group, that's your choice and please go home. I am a Proud Maori and a Proud Kiwi, we are all in this together, let's get on with it. Cheers All

I don’t understand a word of your guest speaker. In 1959 Māori Trade Training was introduced. Many young Māori left home lived in hostels away from their families and gained trades. Those trade training stopped in the 90s. What Māori gained from that initiative were skills they didn’t cry because they were sent away from their families, they stood on their own two feet made mistakes and learnt from it, they were part of a bigger picture and to this day contribute successfully to our society as a whole. This rhetoric is beyond me.

I give her props for coming on to express her opinions in a reasonable manner, though I disagree with her premise. We could perhaps gain some common ground and some mutual respect for one another as Kiwis first (skin-colour last) if we could have more reasonable, but long-form, conversations like this: between reasonable people of different opinions (not the shrill, shouty, screamy types in parliament).

Pacific Islanders have been allowed to emigrate WITHOUT all the qualifications that every other race is required to have to emigrate to New Zealand so, of course they would fulfil the lower paid jobs, because that is all they could do on arrival. The Maori are educated to believe that everyone else is to blame for their own failures, so of course they will fail - it is their own internal racism that is holding maori back. Since 2020 thanks to the Labour/Maori/Greens, the points system has gone and now we are importing a NEW bunch of unqualified people who are filling up the country.

Equality of opportunity. Where your success reflects your effort and ability. Equity. Where certain groups are given the trappings of success regardless of effort or ability. At the direct expense of the rest of society. Rwanda has instituted parliamentary democracy and english common law as the best way to raise the standard of living of all citizens. Those of us who grew up in that system are apparently required to abandon it in favour of a Socialist system like Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, Iran. Successes all, and shining beacons of Equity and human rights.

Childhood adversity isn't the only scenario that comes into play in relation to who fails, who merely survives, and who may thrive in life. Because the childhood adversity can also potentially create a number of different personalities as well. There are conditions such as narcissism, and codependency and HSP and so forth what can also play a roll. Perhaps some narcissists may end up thriving well, especially if they'd be grandiose narcissists. Perhaps HSP may end up having troubled lives. Or codependents may also end up being people pleasers. So, it's not necessarily always as simple as us saying well my grandad had it tuff in childhood, and he'd survived just fine
