Thank you so much for admitting that even accomplished profesional artist still get the urges to "fix" things or go faster than the medium of watercolor allowes! The difference, from what I've seen is, that a good watercolor artist knows when to overrule those urges and stop. It's something I'm struggling a lot with as a beginner and it can be quite disheartening. Knowing, that this is an "this artistic medium" problem more than "I'm a bad artist" problem, helps a grat deal to let go of my perfectionism and focus on the overall progress I'm making, instead of all the mistakes that slip into the individual paintings. And that the painting not being saturated/detailed/sharp enough is a step in the process that NEEDS to happen and I have to LET it happen and go away, so I can add it all later and not make a mess.

Hi Anna! Thank you so much for allowing us to vicariously come along on your watercolor journey! I wanted to, in turn, offer you a humble little tip that I use that I’m hoping will help YOU for a change! 😄You mentioned that you strive not to erase on fine wc paper, so my tip Is simply this: instead of graphite to draft out your painting, you may want to try watercolor pencil instead?? I used to draw using gray watercolor pencil, but now I draft out my outline of the image I’d like to paint in watercolor pencils that resemble the chosen appropriate palette. For example, in order to paint a red rose, I’d choose a light green gold pencil to lightly sketch the outlines of leaves and stems, and a wc pencil from the red or pink family to sketch the petals of a rose. When you sketch out a painting’s outline with watercolor pencil, there is no erasing necessary. A moistened brush will” erase” a delicately drafted line, provided you don’t use a staining color or ink based pencils. Moreover, the color of the watercolor pencil is easier for me to see when trying to paint. The only down side may be when parts are sectioned off for wet on wet: it can erase your line for another section if you’re not careful. But if you get used to leaving a little buffer zone between the lines and the border of your plain water painted area, this shouldn’t be a problem.

This is so helpful, thank you. Do you ever find that the wc pencil does not completely dissolve, and leaves a ‘tidematk’?
@simonettahelena986
@simonettahelena986 Жыл бұрын
@@adriennesaracen6525 Hi there, I don’t know about in every case, but in my own experience, which is by no means vast when it comes to watercolor painting, I haven’t noticed this being an issue, unless I misjudge the color and things are a little mismatched. I only lightly sketch the outline, and strive to go one or two values lighter if possible ,in a slightly more desaturated hue with my watercolor pencils than what I’d choose to follow up with ( with pan paints, etc).The inexpensive watercolor pencils don’t tend to be high chroma, anyway; ;just don’t press down too hard to make any kind of “embossed” type of “watermark”…and this can also happen with graphite, too, if you’re too heavy handed.My suggestion would be to test things out for yourself during your daily drawing/ painting practice before moving on to works that you have more at stake with. Hope I’m articulating this correctly. Hope it’s ok that I posted this, if not, then my apologies.

Thank you for this tutorial. I laughed so many times with many of the tips and admissions of your own whoops did it again mistakes. As someone who has been learning watercolour for ten years now I still need to remind myself of these tips as my enthusiasm for the application of paint often takes over and I get a mess! Thank you for the gentle reminder to NOT let what I have learned be forgotten. I do horrify some folks who ask how I make some of my fur in my paintings looks so real when my answer is “ I over work it”, but it is the answer for me. So sometimes the “ mess” can be used, but it depends on what you are painting. I love to paint birds and try NOT to make feathers look like fur.😂😂. Letting a layer dry overnight is going to be the test for me. Eeek! Lovely lovely work as always and I really enjoy just listening. Thank you for sharing.

You are such a great instructor and generous in sharing the outlines of your sketches, thank you Anna. You definitely understand the principle of giving, and it shows and is reflected in your artwork and your level of success in the field of art. Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Many people do not understand this Biblical principle of giving. All Biblical principles are universal, they apply to everyone, and they work whether you believe in them or not, just like the law of gravity works for everyone whether they believe in it or not.

Anna, your work is truly stunning, often breathtaking. Your style is similar to the one I was finding years ago, as a graphic designer. I was nowhere near your talent when I graduated, but my work was compared to Heather Cooper's (I bet you know that name :-) even though my media was markers or gouache. That was so long ago and life took me down different paths. Now that I have more time, I'm learning about watercolours and I'm obsessed. I just can't stop painting. It is literally the only thing I want to do, lol. Somehow, finally, my own style is slowly surfacing. Your work continues to inspire me and I want to say thank you a hundred times for the watercolour tips you so generously share.

I do use a very fresh Faber Castell gummy eraser because I softly blot areas instead of scrubbing. I just make sure that I don’t grab one used for other mediums. But I totally agree that using a common eraser ruins the surface especially of the 140lb cp or hp. Maybe I have gotten away with somethings in other types of painting but in detailed painting I try to do my best to use just a HB pencil.😊
