The truth about the 4B movement and feminism in South Korea + Tiktok calls me a misogynist?

Addressing the '4b movement' that's supposedly huge in South Korea, according to Tiktok.
The things that ILBE and Megalia did:
Ilbe:
-there was an elementary school girl streaming on afreeca TV from her home and ilbe users went out terrorised her live with comments about how shitty her house is, calling her broke, you’re gonna grow up to be a h*, sl*, so she ended up crying and ending the live.
-taking pictures of their female cousins at home unknowingly (sleeping or resting), with the ilbe hand mark and saying ‘this is my cousin’.
-someone posted a link to download some Child p* for 3 minutes which got hastily deleted but some users had already shared it.
MEGALIA:
-called gay men AIDS carriers and snuck into gay communities and outed them online
-someone got pregnant, waited to find out the sex of the baby and once it was a boy, said they were going to abort it calling it 지지새끼’, aka, penis bastard, and referred to it as a parasite growing inside her so aborted it, and included a picture of her blood and clots afterwards.
-someone made a post about wanting to sexually ‘stiffen’ some young boys she was looking at in the playground and how badly she wanted to eat their innocent young ding dongs but she’s refraining from doing so. She was actually an elementary school teacher but she got found out and fired from her job.
-posting candid pictures of men’s parts with dick pics (seemingly underage) and making fun.

The 4B movement could never be a mainstream movement in South Korea. It could never be a mainstream movement in Europe or even in the United States. Very few women in all countries are willing to give up on relationships with men for feminist reasons, it doesn't matter how bad they are. that's the truth. Women like that are a very small group in all societies, especially in societies like South Korea. It takes a lot of self-respect and self-preservation instinct to do that.

As someone who's lived here in Korea for a decade, this video hits the nail on the head exactly. The conversation around gender equality, feminism, and misogyny/misandry is not a 1:1 comparison to the west. Korea has it's own unique problems that has led to a divergence in the way people perceive this issue between westerners and Koreans. Western people trying to understand these very complex and deep seeded issues in Korea through their own lens can really cause misinterpretations of the public sentiment in Korea

The whole world knows that south korea is a VERY MALE dominated country and culture. So there is no way you can try to escape this!! And yes, I have been to Japan, Taiwan, Hong kong, China, Vietnam, Phillippines, Thailand. They do not have a such male dominated culture as south korea. And yes, I am Asian myself. There are many problems with cultures like south korea. For example 160 people died in that alley with dance clubs, all your korean male party goers refused to let people out, and 160 of them died. It really is a very small movement, less than 5,000 women seem to belong to this movement. The movement gained traction because of the book Kim JiYoung, Born 1982 - first the head of the Justice Party gave President Moon a copy with the message to please embrace the book. You also had Red Velvet's Irene telling fans at a fan meet that she was a fan of the book (think RM and Sooyoung also said they liked the book). Male fans in Korea began attacking her, burning and cutting up her photo. I think the Escape the Corset and the Me Too movements in Korea also embraced the book (which sold over a million copies). I think it spawned this very small movement which is very hardcore about their beliefs and tried to be very visible whenever possible. It's not a manufactured movement, but it's simply a very small one that really hasn't grown past it's initial small base. From what I also understand, 4B often tries to claim a much larger membership number by including women identified with the Me Too and Escape the Corset movements (but aside from appreciating the book don't really see themselves as having anything in common). Put another way, just because goth and vampire culture look very similar and may get confused with each other, they aren't the same.

I am a korean woman. The 4B movement is certainly not well known in Korea. I'm sure many Koreans have never heard of the word "4B." Not everyone pays attention to the field of feminism, but they pay attention to their lives. "But" there is a surge in Korean women who don't meet men, don't marry, don't have sex, and don't give birth to babies, really. I think this is an unconscious social phenomenon that has the characteristics of movement, but it's more like giving up. The reasons are really broad and diverse. Economic hardship, skyrocketing prices, competitive social atmosphere, Korea's unique female discrimination, increased crime among incels and weak sentences... Nowadays, I even feel lucky to meet a man who is "common sense and polite." Every day there's an article about women being murdered... Even if you meet 9 normal guys and you meet 1 crazy guy, your life can be ruined or killed. So it's pretty mainstream among Korean women that it's better to just earn and live happily on their own, which is why they're practicing 4B MOVEMENT... There are a lot of men who are not married, although they may have different reasons than women lol

I am a Korean woman, and I feel like I can talk about this issue. It is true that the word ''4b movement'' itself is unfamiliar in Korea. However, when you ask Korean women whether they think dating a man, getting married, and having children are essential or something they absolutely want to do, the majority will say no. To this extent, women in Korean society no longer consider dating or marriage to be an important factor in their lives, and this phenomenon has naturally formed over the years. When seen in other countries, this phenomenon itself is unique, so it seems that Korean women are actively attempting the ''4b movement''. However, I would like to say that what is more serious is that Korean women have become naturally reluctant to get married rather than working hard in solidarity with this movement. There are acquaintances around me who have suffered dating violence from their boyfriends, and I always hear news of the death of a woman who was unable to have a ''safe breakup'' on the news. Additionally, it is true that there are many cases in which women are killed or girls are sexually assaulted due to indiscriminate attacks, but no proper punishment is given. Korean women are no longer risking their own safety when dating or giving up having children in Korean society, which does not properly protect their children even if they are exposed to danger. We have reached a point where we no longer have expectations from men and society.

This is the most correct answer and reality as a Korean female. Just because it seems small or is different from what Westerners think of as a ‘social movement’ does not mean it's a false. Remember that SK isn't the society where ordinary girls can even utter the 'Fem- word'. Most of us are afraid of associating ourselves with 'that word' so we deny or neglect it. (For example, "R U a AFeminist?" or "married?" are questions only asked to women during job interviews. In severe cases, you could die by an attack that doubts as feminists.) Therefore, this 'phenomenon' is taking place in the most passive and personal form of defense that we can, on a very large scale without the obvious self perception. We usually just didn't prefer foreign-style solidarity (Cuz it means social death), so we didn't know that there were people who called it 4B and that it was known abroad. And when it comes to marriage and birth rates, the most important factor is actually career break. In this country, there is still a strong belief(involuntary) that women must give up their job and raise children after getting married. Of course, there are a dating violence issue with severe widespread confucian misogyny shits before that, and we don't want to add any more risk to our social pressures. So we found the best way to give up as much as possible but not give up on ourselves. But then, suddenly what we got was a lot of attention(thogh just for nationalistic force and insults) and backlash. We just didn't want to be like our mothers. There's a lot more to say, but I'll stop here.

25 years ago I was working in Illinois and CNN or NYT put out an article about pay gap and gender in the U.S.. They listed several fields where women make more than men. Usually female dominated fields. Usually fields that require advanced degrees. This is not Afghanistan where girls can’t attend school even when minors. Women don’t need permission to get a job like Iran. At the end of the day it does not matter who makes more or less but if one makes enough. I watched Kdramas all the time and the wealth gap is perplexing and confusing to me living in Midwest USA. For example everything seems relative. An officer worker of four years lives in a rooftop apartment and saved 100K USD in 4 years being frugal. His senior who worked 9 years in a perfectly decent renovated villa who put down 50K USD as key money and pays 200 USD monthly rent. But he is ‘poor’ and does not have enough money. His peers referred to him as poor. He was perfectly fine growing up until others voiced he was poor cause of the size of the apartment and likely it was not a high rise. So he will not marry and is putting off dating and spending money until he buys a big apartment. Which may be never if his stock choices bad or the market turns. In the U.S. I could pay a lot more for a house but I also could pay a lot less than I do. No one cares if I’m in a condo, townhome, single family, McMansion.

My Japanese grandmother use to always send me cowboy clothes for my birthday and Christmas. Someone told her everyone where I live are cowboys. So, she thought I wanted to dress like one. No disrespect to her, and may she rest in peace, she made a similar mistake. Anyway, my focus on Korea is mostly supply chains and logistics, geopolitics, and music. Never heard of the "movement" prior to today. Watch a lot of Korean TV and movies. Tons of K-Pop and more on my playlists. Do I judge Korea on it? Nope. It'd be like watching a Western (Cowboy movie.) and thinking everyone in the US is a cowboy because the movies were popular at the time. Sure, there's still cowboys here to this day, they're rare and have been for a very long time. Anyway again, I'm waking up to this talk and my first through was that people really need to touch grass more. This stuff that gets talked about online isn't the real world.

Hi Anna, there's a slim chance you'll see this, but just in case, I want to address the "misandrist" thing and why you're getting hate for using it. It's all coming from the west where the word misandry has not been used in good faith by basically any western man. When western women say "misandry doesn't exist", what they mean to say is that "systemic hatred of men is not enforced by power structures" in the same way that misogyny is enforced by those same power structures. That's obviously a lot more to say, and the conversation definitely goes into places it doesn't need to when it gets reduced to soundbites on the internet, but that happens largely because western women are sick of hearing about "misandry" and don't want to spend more time trying to explain this position. I understand that from where you're sitting, these people are all way out of whack and off-base, but you just have to understand that they come from a background where feminism is discussed much more openly amongst women and get agitated by things like this. I probably should've prefaced this by saying I am a Black man in the US, and spend a lot of time on the internet reading this stuff. The women that came after you were largely people who also spend a lot of time on the internet, for better or worse. The majority of them have numerous bad experiences with men as well, which contributes to this.

As a Singaporean man, I understand how it feels to have to go through the army and the women just breezing past and getting their degrees earlier. This leads to a kind of "gap" where a woman of the same age as the man would have more working experience and usually more money than the man. What further compounds it is that Singaporean men have to serve up to 40 days of mandatory reservist every year for the next 10 years after they finish their initial national service. National service for women is also a hot topic in Singapore as well. I am very glad that your views on the topic are very balanced and kind. Keep up the good work!

Quite similar to the conscription requirements in South Korea, but much of it is a function of the surrounding geopolitical landscape presently. It’s an unfortunate bind for both it and its neighboring country. The social construction of normative gender roles is the nidus of the absurdity in a handful of behaviors no longer relevant in the modern day. So while what you said places men behind academically and economically, your counterparts ought to be more understanding of the purpose of serving in the force.
@royliuhm
@royliuhm 2 ай бұрын
@@user-ju2pu8cf2l It is exactly because such understanding, and empathy is lacking, not to mention the lack of respect, even scorn towards national service that is why some Singaporeans, and as in the video, Korean men feel belittled, and even betrayed by "the system".

Interestingly, I read somewhere that only about 900,000 man in Singapore had completed the mandatory 2 years conscription despite having a population of almost 6 million. And, I also saw a population spike of about 3 million in the 90s to almost 6 million today in Singapore. A possible future of Korea if mass immigration route is chosen.
@royliuhm
@royliuhm 2 ай бұрын
@@tobyc8668 No sure where you got the numbers from, but national service is only for Singaporean males. And yes there is a huge influx of non-Singaporeans in Singapore. According to a quick google search it said "In 2023, around 3.61 million people living in Singapore were citizens, compared to around 1.77 million who were non-residents. In that year, the total population in Singapore was approximately 5.92 million" Quite a few years back there was a push towards increasing the population via "foreign talent" and it led to a huge influx of people, and quite a bit of backlash iirc. So yes, there is also the idea that Singaporean men are getting the short end of the stick because foreign men do not need to serve national service either. Which contributes to the "unfairness" and "dissatisfaction" with national service in general.

This is why there is the illusion of it being so popular in their nations when in reality if you go there, the men are disgusted and tired of dealing with the "girl power/girl boss" era and are going to Asia (Korea, Japan, Thailand, The Phillipines, Singapore, etc) all to find more feminine traditional asian wives since that's how our nations still do things for the most part.

As a Korean woman born and living in Korea, I find it very interesting that people call it a movement. I've seen a lot of comments saying that there's no such thing as 4B movement in Korea and it was just all made up by attention-seeking Tik Tokers or something. So let me clarify it. There is NO 4B movement. YET, THERE IS 4B SENTIMENT. This wildly shared sentiment presented itself around 2015, 2016, where women started to fight back misogyny as far as I remember. But it had no name nor were there open discussions about it. It was just widely shared feelings across women in their 20's and 30's. You see, Korea had always been very misogynistic, but at that time, it was just so awful that I can't even find words to describe it. With the development of the internet, men finally got to get their hands on the platforms packed with fellow angry men and started to ENJOY misogyny like a sport. All kinds of women were name-called. (for example, 된장녀 referring to women who buys themself coffee in StarBucks or buy something expensive for themselves because women are not supposed to spend their money on “unnecessary” things. By the way, before the arrival of StarBucks, cafe was kind of men's culture. They were usually served coffee by women in very revealing clothe, whom the customers used to feel up while enjoying coffee. This place is called 다방 meaning tea room. 김치녀 referring to women who let his man pay for their meal on the date or accept expensive presents. And you are whore if you travel abroad because traveling abroad means having sex with foreign men.) Those words actually appeared in 2000's and at first it beautifully worked for men. As men started to label each and every womon attaching huge stigma, women started to check themselves through men’s eyes. But there’s no way you can become a good woman. You buy only cheap clothes, you don’t drink expensive coffee, you put money in the joint-account for date and let the man have the card, but you are still to be blamed because you’re not beautiful enough, not considerate enough, or too nice even. Their standards were simply not reachable. But women still tried to behave themselves policed by this inner men, to match up to the standards and not to be a bad women, as if it were possible. And what happened in 2015 was very unexpected. Two women flying to HK on their trip were infected with MERS, which was contagious disease that hadn’t entered Korea yet. Because they were women, men online were so thrilled to get their target and hunted them down searching for their private information. The women were called 메르스녀(MERS WOMEN) as well as whores because they must have gone there as sex workers in their theory. (Korean men fear women experiencing other cultures and realizing what we experience here is not normal.) That was kind of epiphany moment for many young women. We eventually learned the lesson. "Men are never going to stop harassing us however hard we try. If you can be bullied and stalked just because you’ve caught some virus as a woman, why try?" And the following year, there was this very tragic incident where a young women in her 20's was stabbed to death in a public bathroom in Gangnam, downtown packed with people. The perpetrator said he wanted to kill any women so he was waiting hiding in a booth for a woman to enter. Several men who came before the victim were very safe, of course. Even with his statement against women, the court never admitted it was hate crime, neither did men online saying “she was just unlucky”. I think that was the last straw, being killed just for being a woman. Since then, more and more women have been put off men, hence not dating, let alone marriage. The point is, we do so because it’s just a natural course of action. I mean, is it possible to have an intimate relationship with somebody who decisively hates you? When we say no dating, we don’t intend to change patriarchy and men. We didn't start it as a movement. I’m not sure I can even say we started it because it was more like these shared feelings dormant for a long time in women’s heart burst out out of blue. And here we are. We are just so fed up with all the things men do to us and all we can do is try our best to avoid them (especially when the court system and the government is not on your side.) Still, women don't openly talk about it. We can't. A few months ago, a short-haired woman was heavily attacked in a convenient store because "she must be a feminist seeing her short hair." (And the court ruled out hate crime against women again despite the perpetrator saying so.) In Korea, men use the word femi(=feminist, 페미) as an insult, another name-calling for not submissive women like women with short hair or no makeup. Men share their suspicion about who(singers, actors, authors, cartoonists, you name it) might be a feminist and come together to threaten, harass and stalk whoever it might be. They once had a voice actor fired complaining to the company that she is a feminist. No one is willing to risk being targeted by this group of men. So there had been this quiet but strong sentiment with no name until it was given one. But JUST BECAUSE THERE’S NO NAME TO IT, DOESN’T MEAN THAT I DOENS’T EXIST. And I don't think the name 4B movement perfectly matches what it really is. I’m not sure the correct definition of the movement in English, but the corresponding korean word for it implies that it should be an active or deliberate action taken to raise awareness for a cause and fight the system in the hope of changing something. In that sense, what Korean women are doing now is not 4B movement, it’s just 4B (sentiment). We don't want anything from men. All we want is OUT. No wonder many korean women haven’t heard the name “4B movement”. In a country where there’s very few coverage about women’s issue, how would you expect them to have heard the term coined by foreigners? But the phenomenon most certainly exists. The number speaks for itself. I’ve read some comments saying it seems too extreme, or culty, and I assure you, it's not. You will drive as long as the chances of getting a crash is not as high as you should be concerned. But what if 1 out of 2 drivers got in an accident? Would you drive? Men are just not worth risking my rights as a human-being and my life. Have you heard Mol-ka, which turns your everyday life into a porn? Do you know how many women are being killed by their intimate partners in Korea? I’m teaching in highschool, and boys whisper femi femi (as a curse word) giggling when I mention anything close to equality. Saying no to being a men’s punching bag is not extreme at all.

Also, it's not much of an argument that the men are in the military for 2 years while women are graduating and getting jobs if the men still out earn the women either way. Every society should work together to alleviate the suffering of both genders. Women benefit from the patriarchy too though significantly lesser than men but we should remove systems that no longer serve us as a people.

Nobody is bending together to hate men and maybe we are seeing to different sides of thinsg because I didnt hear nor see as to what you were talking about. A lot of Korean women at least from my side would educate and other women from all over relate or didnt realize theyve been participating in this the whole time plus, nobody is hating men..its more about calling themselves out and protecting ourselves incase you havent seen the world women are living in today. It doesn't matter if we want to thrive and do better, men are still the cause for a lot of harm and doings that only MEN must fix and do for themselves but unfortunately, women are to blame even for mens issues and we are expected to be mothers or therapists or to "fix men" when its not our problem. A lot of what men and women are saying about this movement and just living their life has been the same resukt everytime and its usually about men.

I live in Scandinavia and about two weeks ago stumbled upon an article about this Korean feminism 4B-whatever in our *national news agency's* website nontheless. It described the situation pretty much by the book: all women between fist and stove, shallow wage gap description, patriacrhy, low birth rates, open misandry and its counter movement. The article concluded that *all men* should take a hard look in the mirror. After the internal facepalm had subsided, I began to think why on earth this was even covered here... then I remembered that our national media is run by closet misandrists who don't hesitate to mock men and validate their cause at every turn they can get.

But I'm very thankful that I got this perspective bc I felt something wasn't right when there was only like 3 articles about it and then 1000 TikToks

Questions to those who support 4B movement 1. You don't want love, if you do, then how will you get it? 2. You want a luxurious life, if yes, then for whom will you leave these luxury items, the government or your neighbour?

It's the same going on in Chinese social media among the youngest generation, Gen A and some of Gen Z, who are using Douyin (chinese tiktok) and saying women shouldn't do anything at all with men or marry anymore. It's growing, it's hard to tell what percent of the younger population they actually are and if it's worrisome as perhaps its growth is just appearance on social media or it's megative marginal growth, and in my experience, Chinese women are way more focused on marriage than US women here in NYC. But it seems true they don't tend to want many kids in their marriages, just like Korea's problem. And increasingly delaying when you marry also lowers birthrate stats.

I live in the US and have never met a single person who never desired or never desires romantic love. Not a single one. I’ve met people who’ve been hurt but their ideal would be finding a good partner. The amount of gays ppl verses straight too is wildly exaggerated by media.

Interesting so I've heard the opposite but the fact that you are hearing that but still see the division between men and women, then that should tell you that women have had enough and they're willing to take the long road alone and not settle" just because" because men are moving the same way towards men too so idk

I applaud you for this video, you are stating a lot of facts but at the same time, as a foreign woman who has lived and worked in Korea for a long time, I believe there is still a lot of improvement to do to protect women or to give equal payment for same position at work in Korea. Sexual crimes against women or children aren’t punished enough and a lot happen to foreign women who will be brushed off when trying to report. I am stating this because I have seen it around me a looooot of times. Also for payments, I was paid less for being a woman than my male colleagues… (and they are foreigners who have never served the military service). So I don’t know… the gender “war” is a difficult topic honestly and it’s not just an issue in Korea, that is a fact. Hopefully it gets better one day.

The all men stuff is something women say as a self caution and to protect themselves until they know those individually like even if it's what black people say the same for white even if it's true doesn't make their experiences valid and being black in this world knowing we have no protection then I understand why black would move a certain way around white people even after SOOO many experiences they've had, it's not generalizing nor bad just a protection thing
