I love my 3 litre diesel BMW 7 series. A soft touch of the accelerator gives adequate acceleration to the speed limit (thank you to the famous 3 litre inline 6) , whilst being quiet, and the 6 speed shifts without any hint that it's doing so. Elegant woodgrain finish on the interior, soft carpets, and at night the interior mood lighting gives off a warm orange hue throughout the cabin. Its run around for 230,000km, and is by far the most reliable, most elegant car to drive on the daily. I bought my first BMW in my late teens, the majestic E32 V12, and, whilst it wasn't a diesel, it's for sure been a love affair ever since. And so of course I had to get my hands on the original 7 series for the late 70s (a story for another time) - What I can truly say is there's is nothing quite like the drive of an elegant, well engineered sedan, from any era.

Hello Anna!!! This the same engine I had in the CLE during my test. That engine is simply amazing!!! I made a fuel consumption of 4,6 ltrs on average. Sounds very good, very quite inside and when you pedal to the metal the roar is OK. I fulled the tank and estimated range were also 1400 kms... I love that advantage because I hate to stop on gas stations frequently. Another feature you better ask is to have the seat massage on those seats. After a long run you get out the car like if you were just for a while. Last but not least, not having a cable to carry or worry about is a plus. Full combustion engines are absolutely necessary in my humble opinion and the market is still telling the constructors that is a place for those machines. But, of course, in the near future we will experience some big updates with the electric cars. The new CLA seems to be one of them. I heard that will come with a variant of 2045 hp. Geely motors. Soon we will find out. But for me, the most interesting variant will be the electric hybrid combustion one. And let me tell you Anna, you look so elegant!!! So beautiful!!! Have a wonderful day and never let your stunning eyes get bored!!! Bye!!!

In 2009 I bought a new Mercedes E-Class diesel. It had 17 km on the odometer. 2 days later the turbo broke down, then it started again 2 times. No explanation from Mercedes despite my questions, they probably think I'm too stupid to understand a technical explanation. The third month, in the city center, the horn started howling, no way to stop it for a quarter of an hour. I sold this car and I don't want to hear about this brand again, ever

I miss driving diesel cars from the 2000's. Lots of torque and easier on the wallet and then the world changed.... yet again. Diesels far from being the recommended fuel years ago were now to be regarded as the spawn of evil (for some of the old rattling smokers they might have had a bit of a point) so we were pushed to petrol (less economical so we pay more tax on fuel) or electric at a time when common charging interfaces were a long time away. Anyway I just might be tempted back to diesel for a used car at some point as we all know modern cleaner engines do not spew out the the devils emissions anywhere near as much as they did. Used diesels can be a bit of a bargain these days. Although I would love a modern Mercedes there is so much more to go wrong but the manufacturer does appear to have got on top of the quality issues of some years back. Maintenance and service costs will be high though.

Beautiful car, diesel the sensible choice, the thermal efficiency of diesel is way above petrol, producing less harmful CO2 greenhouse gases, remember that!?!? Like petrol it produces NOX emissions, but higher, they disappear in the atmosphere, but in cities more of a problem, you will never see petrol in buses lorries or trains, just no guts (torque) in petrol, as Anna pointed out a lot lower revs at 80 KPH than petrol (less exhaust gases) DPF are a problem as clog up if not driven on longer trips, petrol Particles filters now also suffer, as long as you get your engine up to working temperature for 15 minutes it will help greatly, DONT believe the sensational headlines in news papers, especially in the U.K. where many sheep live, great review thank you.

Diesels make the most sense in these types of cars. These kinds are bought predominately by fleet buyers and their employees spend large amounts of time on motorways and drive lots of miles. It's the only kind of fuel for this type of car.
@AnthonyKellettАй бұрын
The latest MBUX is excellent. It just irritates me that, in recent years, the S-Class doesn't get these things first. I've not investigated the next S-Class options, but it was still way behind, recently. The UK is particularly poorly served. We couldn't get S-Class rear-wheel steering or rear-entertainment screens, even though the rest of the world seemed to do so. Apparently, you can't get the exhaust valve switch, on the new AMG CLE, in the UK. I'm actually considering giving Mercedes the middle finger, followed by two-fingers, if it doesn't pull its finger out!

I think this Mercedes is beautiful both inside and out, one of my brothers-in-law thinks the same, his favorite car brand is Mercedes. Have to point out when you mentioned how reviled the diesel engine was and still is, it was claimed how much more dangerous diesel was to humans than petrol. This is a gross lie, because in all mines around the world, as well as tunnel construction, you are only allowed to drive vehicles with diesel engines. Petrol engines are cutting edge as these are more dangerous than diesel. Have a nice Sunday and the rest of this year.

Nice review Anna as usual. I way prefer the traditional grill with the star on the hood. I hate that front end. It looks like a cheap aftermarket thing paid on Wish! Mercedes cars are far from being as reliable as Lexus or like they used to be 30 years ago. The problem of this brand is that they lost their image and now, they produce cars with poor materials with a short life expectancy, and they are way to expensive for what they are. Yes that interior is really eye flattering, but touch it, it squeaks everywhere... I don't mind to pay 70.000€ in a Lexus that will last at least 20 years without major issues and which will retain its value much better than any Mercedes of the 2nd hand market. Go maintain that car after the warranty !! Before, you bought a Mercedes for a status, for quality, and reliability. Today, at least the past 25 years, you buy the brand, the star, to show off. Period.

Lexus doesn't have diesels or cars with 1,000km (620mls) range. This is specific car for specific purposes and we continental Europeans love those cars - ultra long range,long lasting engines,high comfort. There's something for everybody on the market. Pity that small diesels (Fiesta,polo,punto,208) have dissapeared because of bureaucratic nonsence.

Dear Anna you make nice reviews. But honestly German carmakers don't know anymore what to do. They cannot compete with modern ev comming from Us or Asia. So no, they want us to believe that diezel has still a future. Not so sure. If you don't need to buy the car and van lease it as a company car maybe yes you could still select a diezel. But for people who need to buy this, stay away of this hyper sensible technology. Diezel engines are so complicated i.e their exhaust gas filtration that these cars becomes so delicate to maintain once they have some miles on the odometer . Not convinced of course Mercedes and BMW will tell you another story.
@AnnaOnRoadsАй бұрын
I have a BMW diesel as my personal car. 9 years and not a single issue. It works like a dream! Modern EVs from US or Asia? So is this why they hold a tiny fraction of the car industry market? Because they are so competitive? Different horses for different courses. Would you like to have an EV if you do not have a charger at home/work and you live in a country with harsh winters like Canada? Because this is the reality for many people. Should you go for a car that works FOR you or perhaps the other way around? In the case of Mercedes and BMW - it is the customer demand that made them return to diesel! Not the other way around...
@wimcalant8425Ай бұрын
@AnnaOnRoads there are some of your arguments correct ev ca´ indeed be problematic in real rurar areas. But please be aware German.car industry is currently in a deep crisis. They cannot compete with Asian and Us competition, thousands of jobs are under pressure. Reason for that they arz not able to offer what customer are requesting for currently i.e affordable cars with don't have a huge impact on environment. I am also owner of a german car, before had Japanese. I learned it the hard way what is the difference, and yes some may not like it to hear, but they are not reliable anymore as we are used to. To complex too much costdowns on the mechanic parts. I don't believe they will survive by investing in old technology.
@AnnaOnRoadsАй бұрын
I believe the German car industry is in trouble because they’ve cracked under pressure of the EU regulations and agreed to follow the EV mandates. But then they faced the cold hard reality - most people didn’t and still do not want EVs. Not only because they are expensive. You gotta charge the bloody thing. And that is another story.
@AnnaOnRoadsАй бұрын
Korean and Japanese were always more competitive in Europe. Yet, they have not taken over. We buy cars with our heads but in most cases, also emotions. And we aren’t that emotional about Asian cars. Personally I love Asian cars but I am not a fan of Chinese cars because most of these do not drive well. But that’s only my personal experience so far.
@wimcalant8425Ай бұрын
@AnnaOnRoads reviewers are not always representing what the real world byers are choosing. If money is not a problem than we might indeed go for our dream cars. But for most people a car is a big investment and it should not become a money pit afterwards. As for today the Chinese cars are still rather seldom in West Europe but it seems they are gonna make a breakthrough. They do offer a lot for the moment compared to other brands. But they will also need to set up a dealership network. And honestly the last 5 years the Germans did also introduced a lot of costdowns on their products mainly on the interiors quality in my opinion it will become more more difficult for them to sustify the premium they ask for their cars. It's true that a Merc E class buyer will not let his sleep for a Chinese alternative not sure the Merc ( whole German car industry ) share owners will have good sleeps the commong years. Hard times are ahead.

It seems stupid to me that after decades of refinement to perfect the diesel engine - the authorities decide it’s too polluting to the environment.
