That’s what I’ve always thought as well!! She did leave her mark for sure and the fact that Elizabeth never married and reigned on her own without a man makes it the revenge so much sweeter and then passed the crown on down to The son of the woman that was killed her in her name. I don’t believe she really wanted that to happen but she also knew it was Mary or herself. I actually love the way it all played out after that!! Karma is a something else!!

What choice did she have? Acknowledging Catherine and Mary, would have meant the most she could ever be is a mistress - her reputation would be tainted all her life. She was put in the position she was in by the abusing stalker Henry and vulture power grabbing men in her family… she had to make the most of it for her own sake - even if it meant being ruthless. Let’s not blame Anne for making the best of her very limited choices. Let’s blame Henry and those powerful men who used her, abused her and ultimately murdered her.

I feel as though Anne was trapped. Henry was obsessed by her and she was powerless to do much if anything against him. She turned his obsession into power. While I don't agree with with what happened to Katherine I don't think the blame can be placed solely on Anne for what happened. She did what she could in a time when women had no power and tired to make the best of what was happening around her and to her. While she was cruel to Mary I understand where she was coming from on wanting her submission and also trying to cement her daughters position as heir.

I always thought Catherine of Aragon was the most royal, dignified, betrayed and disrespected royal lady ever. I’ve wondered if after her heart was broken so deeply and so often and constantly stressed and humiliated for his ego that she’d succumbed to cancer. She was abolished for getting older, not giving him a son, and being better than him in the past. The kingdom loved her and knew she’d been cheated. Divorced unfairly, shamed, disgraced, mocked, placed in a rotting mansion with no chance of ever seeing her only daughter again. Just the thought of it hurts my heart. She was a regal and true queen. She deserved so much better treatment. This abuse of Catherine in every unfair way leaves little wonder why her daughter would have been famous for her revenge on anyone who agreed with Henry VIII. Tragic.

I'm always taken aback by how a woman's "ambition" is to this day seen as a deficit in her character. With men, ambition is not questioned; only the degree of ambition is remarked upon. Women are capable of the full range of human characteristics and desires. Considering how limited and restricted their lives were and continue in many respects to be, it is quite the achievement to even have any ambition under the tentative circumstances.
@aelinorholloway3669
@aelinorholloway3669 Жыл бұрын
As an ambitious woman myself, I can safely say the number one reason ambition is seen as a deficit in women is because ambitious women are not easy to control. Along with ambition comes strength and independence, qualities that men often dislike in women. The amount of men who become agressive and controlling the minute I express the desire for anything aside from marriage and children is depressingly common. It all boils down to one thing control.

What has always fascinated me was Henry's complete lack of logic. If a time machine were such a thing I think it would be truly fascinating to question him about this catch 22: On 17 May 1536 the marriage of Anne Boleyn and Henry was annulled by Cranmer. This means that in the eyes of God and the public H&A were never married at all, as opposed to a divorce where there was an actual marriage that had later ended. So after the annulment Anne would have been nothing more than some commoner woman who was a temporary mistress of the King. How then could she be executed for adultery only 2 days later on 19 May? Adultery against who? How can you commit adultery if you were never married to begin with?

Anne must have been an extraordinary and remarkable woman. She captured the Kings heart and kept him at bay for several years shows her determination and ambition and intelligence also. Because of her and the then Pope in not granting Henry's annulment to his marriage England saw the reformation of the church causing upheavals in English society. The resentment Henry must have felt after Anne failed to give him a son changed Henry's love to hate as he reflected the enormous risks he took in behalf of her, tearing the church down, and judicially killing his friends like Thomas more and the people's hatred against Anne and in his mind her not showing sufficient gratitude in elevating her to be Queen. I am not surprised instead of annuling the marriage Henry decided on trumped up charges against Anne, including witchcraft as to lay blame on her for all his actions he took. Henry th 8th was a complicated, insecure, paranoid character of a man. After her execution his cruel nature became more apparent in the coming years.

Wonderful documentary. May I add that Henry Percy fainted when Anne was declared guilty and had to be carried out of court and that Anne's eyes and lips moved as her severed head toppled into the basket. As for Mark Smeaton I have always believed that he stated he deserved death because he lied about his relationship with Anne which never existed beyond his desire for her. That he never retraced his confession, made under torture, I believe was because he was offered beheading as opposed to being hung, drawn and and quartered. He was just a young, frightened boy and death was inevitable. That's just my take on it, of course

Anne and her sister was used by their father and uncle for financial gain, titles, and position from the king. 😡Mary was already married when she was summoned to court as a fake gift to the queen and to be his mistress. By the time the king noticed Anne she had already secretly married a Duke. Her father and uncle quickly annulled the marriage citing the Duke was betrothed to another woman prior to his marriage to Anne. Anne did not want Henry because he had a son with her sister and discarded her, so she left court. Henry stalked and pursued her relentlessly with gifts. Property and titles was given to her father, brother, and uncle. ( Henry was sure Anne would give him a male air because her sister 1st child by him was a boy) Also, once it got out Henry wanted to make her his queen she no longer had any other marriage prospects so she conceded…. History villainizes her when really she was a victim. 😢 Queen Catherine held no animosity towards Anne because she understood women had to rights especially if you did not have royal blood. If Anne had given birth to Henry's long-awaited heir, she will live much longer and had the chance to develop a good mother-daughter relationship with Elizabeth. Her outburst with Henry's dalliances seems a pretty normal reaction for anyone who caught their husband in an adulterous affair, during those times women were supposed to look the other way and be accepting of their husband's affairs. Anne was highly intelligent but sadly her superior intellect didn't save her. Henry was too cruel not too annul the marriage, instead allow her to be executed for false charges.

Hi Phoebe! I totally agree with you. If Anne had a son or two, she would have been in Henry's good graces, but he still would have had that wondering eye. I think that she was under so much stress after having a daughter and seeing that Henry was losing interest in her, it contributed to her miscarriages. I've also seen a couple of documentaries, I think one was by Lucy Worsley that suggested that Henry's health issues also contributed to his wives not being able to bring a pregnancy to full term in most cases. I can't remember the causes. Heck, I've watched SO many documentaries and read so much, it does get a little jumbled. There is an historical trilogy of novels about the Boleyn's by Laura Anderson. I found the 2nd novel, "The Boleyn Deceit". I couldn't really get into it, but it is about Anne having a son, Henry IX and his reign as King of England. I’ve watched documentaries and programs for years on the Tudors and have noticed a common denominator that exists today: the backstabbing, jealousy, envy, narcissism and political manuevering that occured in Henry VIII’s court still occurs in the power circles of the contemporary workplace today. Be it government, industry, academia, medicine, military, whatever. Humans in power positions seem rigged to see others as either threats, impediments or opportunities for personal advancements. I think Anne entered a Tudor shark tank of such people who through birthright, felt entitled to everything Henry and his court had to offer. Anne did very well at first, but soon her luck and advantages wore thin and the sharks closed in for the kill. The closer one becomes to power, especially as an outsider, the closer one becomes to this threat.

Anne Boleyn was railroaded into making look like she was guilty for execution so the King had to make up a reason to get rid of her. Henry appropriated her condemnation from the lies and intrigue of his court members. This event I think was his expediency to cause for 3rd marriage to Jane Seymour. The 486th anniversary of her execution is in 3 days. Anne Boleyn was innocent. She had too much prying eyes around her to have done those adulterous acts in such a short time.

Today, 19th May, 486 years ago. Under her daughter the greatest and began the largest empire the world had ever seen. Remembered fondly and had a far greater impact on the world than that terrible human being that was Henry viii. He was basically useless, drained England's coffers and sowed the seeds for decades of religious violence and instability. He left England a far poorer place than he found it. He was just a bad ruler in every way.

There are KZbin uploaders, who posit that Henry sustained traumatic brain injury(ies) during his jousting accident, and that his personality changed as a result of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Add to that diabetes caused by overeating and drinking wine sweetened with lots of sugar, the painful neuropathies attendant with diabetes, his ulcerous leg that never healed, and the ravages of normal aging. All of these are thought to have contributed to Henry's decline into tyranny.

Hello The People Profiles, First of all, I have to tip my hat to Dr. Jacqueline Elliott for her research and teleplay. The second is to Gareth Johnson. His narration is easy to understand and is precise. Thanks goes out to all of the behind the scenes crew who bring these documentaries to fruition. Now, regarding Anne Boleyn. I have seen so many movies, TV series (not The Tudors or Reign) and read many books and articles about her. My opinion is much like Dr. Elliott's. I don't think that Anne was "looking" to become involved with Henry at all in the first place. I think that she felt that she would have been fine being married to someone a little higher ranking that she was. However, Henry's persistent and ardent pursuit of her, she possibly felt that she couldn't get away from him in the long run. She tried, but being "unattainable" just made him chase her more. Gee, that seems to happen quite a bit. I think that she finally gave in and then she saw her opportunity. I can't blame her for not wanting to be a discarded mistress as her sister was and Bessie Blount, plus a few others. Isn't this an age old story, older wealthy man (10 years in this case) pursuing younger attractive woman. The circumstances are timeless. Thousands and thousands of women did and still do the same. Anne's family couldn't marry her off since she had caught the king's eye. What options did she have? Could she have fled to the Continent? Probably not. So, she went for it. I'm just sorry that her story came to the end that it did. I do really think that Jane Seymour was not as innocent toward Henry during Anne's lifetime and afterward as history would make us think. I think that Jane seeing the situation was a schemer as Anne has been accused of being.

Part of Mary's problem was her treatment at her mother's "fall from grace" by her father. Being a precious, beloved daughter to a "bastard". Being treated with, barely, off-hand tolerance. Usually with contempt and slurs and other suchlike, would mess up any child. Allowing no balanced persons around her. Even then, she was more of a pawn than her mother. More like her cousin, Mary of Scotland. I have put all of her problems in Henry's lap. I never have called her "Bloody". Study of the society, in the wider Europe, as well as England, would show she wasn't unusual for the times.

Anne is actually born in 1507. Gareth Russell, on his blog “Confessions of a Ci-Devant” explains why. “Examining all the evidence impartially it is impossible, I think, to accept that Anne Boleyn was born as early as 1500 or 1501. Any piece of evidence that has been put forward to support the idea that she was born at the turn-of-the-century can be refuted, once common sense is applied to the problem… Independently of one another and with absolute certainty, Jane Dormer and William Camden both stated that Anne Boleyn had been born in 1507 and to my mind there is no evidence whatsoever that has yet come to light which contradicts them.”

I feel that there was a lot of here say surrounding Anne’s personality, her supposed unchaste nature. Records show that she was very bitter over the meddling of her relationship with Henry Percy. She did not want involvement with the king, as she would have the knowledge of what had happened to her sister. I’m not saying that she was an angel, but she was a woman of faith. That part about her having an extra finger as a witches mark, c’mon really. No one wanted to make the king angry, so it was wise to step lightly. I feel sorry for anyone who Henry set his sights on.

Anne Boleyn saw an opportunity and she grabbed at it: the other five courtiers were caught up in the incident however, and lost their heads. Henry required a son to carry the line of seccession - however, this was not to be, and Anne became Anne without a head. To my mind the punishment was far too harsh if she was guilty - but in that era it was not.

Can’t help but wonder what Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn would have felt upon Elizabeth 1 becoming queen regent of England since women were not seen as regent material. She had one of the longest reigns until Queen Victoria and then Queen Elizabeth II (if I’m not mistaken. I’m not from the UK). Her reign was seen as the “Golden Age”. Anne I’m sure would have been so proud but not sure what Henry VIII would have thought since he wanted only male heirs to become the monarch and he assumed his son Edward VI would have gotten married, have his own children, and become King with his male children succeeding Edward VI but Edward VI died at 15 and never got the chance as he was so Ill towards the last 6-12 months of his life. Now that we have healthcare that we now have the life expectancy is much higher. Look how old Prince Philip got to before he died at 99 and Elizabeth II dying at 96 and her son the now King Charles III who didn’t ascend to the throne until he was 73 years old which I’m sure was unheard of in Henry VIII’s time. It makes me glad to have not been around during these timeframes when you never know if someone who didn’t like you would spread false rumors destroying your life and even possibly being brutally tortured or executed. Queen Elizabeth I wasn’t a saint by any stretch of the imagination as she did apparently have some of Henry VIII temper but wasn’t nearly as bad and wasn’t in it to execute everyone. When she signed the death warrant of Mary Queen of Scots she didn’t want the execution carried out unless there was absolutely hard evidence that she was trying to overthrow her, have her executed, and so on. She apparently didn’t want the death of a fellow monarch on her hands. Apparently after a rebellion happened to try to free Mary and get her on the thrown, members of her court hurried to have Mary the Queen of Scots executed as soon as possible while they still had a warrant that was valid for her execution. Apparently Elizabeth I was LIVID! I would love to spend 1 day as a fly on their walls if we could turn back time to see for ourselves what life was like for the royalty, nobles, and the commoners. I’m sure it will make people see things very differently!
