Such a good presentation you made...I wanted to ask you if you have read King Henry's biography that was mostly compiled from King Henry's ex fool. His name was Will Sommers I believe. It was a whale of a book about a whale of a King. Will had much to say about this wife that was important to her story and King Henry's subsequent behavior that wasn't mentioned. Still a Fantastic presentation.

I believe Katherine, a young girl, was a people-pleaser. Neglected since birth, she was molested as a child, manipulated by powerful men and sold as a young wife to a tyrant, old enough to be her father. She was a victim of circumstances and she was powerless to stop her fate from happening :(

The claims that she was molested as a child are actually highly unlikely and more likely something she said out of desperation. Manox was probably that much older than her and there is evidence she instigated the relationship- especially given the disparity in their ranks. he also couldn't have done anything during their lessons as she would have been chaperoned.

Henry was very grateful that she didnt try & fight Henry to stay queen consort which to her credit was the smartest thing to do . I didn't expect to get so emotional listening to this! I appreciate the fact you represented Katharine as a person, not an harlot who fooled the king along with her scheming family. Henry lamented his pain but never thought for a second how young his wife was. Henry truly was unhinged after his divorce from Catherine of Aragon. He saw himself as basically a God and he was notorious throughout Europe for killing his nobles, which actually wasn't all the common, at least at the rate Henry was doing it. Even less common was killing a consort. Exile, yes. Locking a wife in a convent was acceptable. Annulment, fine. But executions were rare. Henry was seen as a tyrant, which is he was.

Watching this documentary of Katherine Howard is a revelation. She was a high spirited, full of life and loved beautiful clothes and jewellery which is normal for young women. She was very kind to Elizabeth and Edward and to Anne of Cleves. Mary, who was too sour to be friendly to Katherine. I believe Henry had her executed as she pricked his manly ego and Henry's ego was of megalomanical poportions.

Dereham particularly paid a horrendous price for that dalliance. Culpepper too paid the ultimate price. I think Henry’s worst act was the execution of Margaret Countess of Salisbury, an aged lady he had known all his life. A Royal Princess herself. His vindictiveness knew no bounds.

I believed that Katherine was a neglected child who was vulnerable to the "affections" of predatory men like Mannox and Dereham. Then, due to the political intriguing of her Howard elders, she was victimized again--being pushed forward to capture Henry's attention and the crown. That she was executed is one of Henry's worst and cruelest actions. Her story is one of use and abuse by those who should have protected her--and being nothing more than pawn in the political machinations of her family, she was the only one to pay a horrendous price.

Agreed. However, knowing what had happened to her distant cousin Ann Boleyn (on adultery and incest allegations), she was terribly imprudent to have a romantic relationship with Culpepper. She received poor advice from her family. Adultery was rightly considered as treason for a Queen since she could insert a bastard child into her husband 's line of succession. Furthermore, the King would have been humiliated in front of his country and the whole of Europe.

Her Uncle Howard's son was executed shortly before Henry's death ad her uncle would have been too if Henry had not died first. So, they did pay a price but hers was worse because she was not trying for political gain.

Henry spent most his life expecting all around him to be responsible for his emotional well-being. To me he comes off as an enormous petulant child constantly wallowing in self pity. And physically, well, did they have no mirrors in the palace? Catherine was barely out of her childhood, and where were her advisors? Very sad for her. Very repulsed by him.

Agree. I have read historical books about Henry's wives. Catherine Howard is often described as a playful young woman who cheated on him. This story had explained het in a positive Light. Glad to have heard it. He really was a very Narcissistic man imo, and he had zero compassion.

Unfortunately, her own uncle is the one that put her in this position. And when her immaturity caught up with her, he washed his hands of her and tossed her to the side. She was so young and this was a horrible situations for her. And the fact that her own family put her there is disgusting. Especially after they saw what Henry did to her cousin. This is a beautiful tribute to Catherine. I know that many people dislike The Tudors, but I loved the portrayal of her by Tamzin Merchant. They showed her as young, fun loving, caring, and so full of life and joy. She was a great light in that show and the execution scene was also, incredibly beautiful and dignified, even though they gave her the Culpeper line.

And there was no evidence of definitive sexual relations with any of the men she was accused of being with. Women's sexuality was judged very harshly then and still today. She was very likely a naive and trusting teenager. She knew when to distance herself from the men when they wanted more as so much rested on a woman's honour. It's unlikely she had all these dalliances but somehow never got pregnant. Seems more likely she was a victim of vicious tongues, jealousy, political intrigue and sexism.

A girl who Catherine was roommates with while in boarding school claimed that a night it was hard for her to sleep because of the strange “puffing” noises Catherine and Dereham would make during the night. Plus Catherine only claimed she was “abused” by Mannex and Dereham after she found out her sentencing.

I agree. In many ways, the case of Lady Jane Grey was similar: a young lady used as a pawn by scheming elders, made to marry (although that wasn't unusual for the time), and caught in an untenable position through no fault of her own that eventually costs them their life.

Another excellent documentary. Popular history tends to paint very simplistic portaits of historical figures. She was good, she was bad, she was promiscuous, she was flippant, she was immature etc. But complex people living in complex times cannot be reduced to one word. I believe that Catherine Howard was actually more sinned-against than sinning. The Duke of Norfolk shoved her at Henry..then shoved her under the bus when she made a mis-step typical of an undereducated, unsupervised teenager. This commentator is far too discrete and tactful to suggest what is certainly a possibility: that once married to Henry, the teenaged-but hardly sexually inexperienced--Catherine might have found Henry, old, fat, with a stinking, ulcerated leg physically repugnant once he was divested of his gloriously flamboyant Day Clothing. Take away the satins, velvets and cloth-of-gold, the jewels and other trappings of kingship, and what you have is what I described earlier. Obviously Catherine tried to "be bonnie and buxom in bed and at board" since Henry believed her pregnant several times. What a terrible fate for a young girl.

Like, I've seen documentaries that are plenty inaccurate too - and at least with a musical you understand that it's altered and dramatised right from the off, by its very nature. If you watch a documentary that's 'full of inaccuracies,' that's much harder to spot and the inaccuracies are much easier to believe because the format lends credence to them. I think it's very easy to snoot about a deliberately dramatised medium, and make yourself feel good that way - but much harder to admit that not even media presented as serious and informative is free from inaccuracy, that there isn't actually, really, as much of a dichotomy as you're acting like.

I had to leave the video when the letters asked for a position in the palace in turn for her acquaintance were read. It sickened me to think how callus these people were to such a young and somewhat misguided youth. This poor girl was doomed from birth. Thank you for such an in-depth video of her troubled life. There is a great book by Philippa Gregory , the Boylen inheritance. In it she is portrayed as a mischievous young girl, not promiscuous necessarily, just really young and not even immature, she was 14 years old, for goodness sake! It’s really good though. Anyone interested in this documentary would love it. It is historical fiction, but the major events in the book all seem to be accurate. And it’s from her point of view, all the way to the execution.

Likely she was 18. There is record of her telling the French ambassador that she was 18. There is a book called Young Damned and Fair that is probably the most detailed and balanced account of her life.

It is worth noting that in Katherine’s indictment she was not accused of adultery. It was believed that her taking Dereham into her service was an indication that she planned to return to her “ evil ways”.

I was never really interested in the kind of history about kings, queens and battles, but a few years ago we discovered through our family tree that I'm descended from the Howards and am cousin to Catherine Howard, Anne & George Boleyn, and their siblings, 15 times removed. I didn't know much about Catharine so I was really pleased to learn more. This is a fabulous documentary and just goes to underline how people's lives were often manipulated by some men who had greed for wealth and power. Brave, brave girl. :)

Always nice to see someone, anyone speak of Catherine Howard as more then the sum of her parts. She was abused and groomed by men in a society that considered women to be dolts and below male children in the general scheme of life. Their intelligence considered less then any male. I am always a little gleeful that Catherine's cousin and fellow unfortunate wife, Anne really wins in the end as it is her daughter who gives England a true Monarch. Go Howards, they really got the better of Henry in the universal scheme of things. Also their bravery in the end is astonishing. I would have to be dragged kicking and screaming, such is the difference between the past and the present.

I love this interpretation of her! I too fell into the constant documenting of her as a young, "hot in the pants" teenager so I'm glad to see these points being considered. Court is a place of plotting, schemes, and master manipulators. The reality is she was a child constantly being taken advantage of for other people's power and personal gain and she lost her young life unjustly because of it.

It’s why she was killed, it was illegal for the queen to cheat on the king, but encouraged for the king to cheat on his queen

Its a shame Henry VII couldn't learn from his parents' loving marriage and treat his wives as anything more than incubators of male heirs. Cannot begin to tell you how big into the Tudor period I was as a child. I knew EVERYTHING about them, from Henry VII right the way through to James VI becoming James I. I think she was very modern in that she liked men and she liked to flirt and had relationships. Unfortunately that was not the way girls were supposed to behave at that time. The fact that she wrote love letters to culpepper whilst Queen didn't help. She also snuck around to see him unchaperoned. All of this and her past flirtations brought about her downfall. Men could flirt and sleep around without consequences. Katherine was a virgin however a woman could not do the things men were allowed to do. Some did but if yiu were caught as in Katherine's case there were consequences. She was not a good marriage candidate for the king but she was pushed towards him. Poor Katherine.

Her powerful family pushed her into a marriage with a much older man who had already murdered one of her relatives and who she almost certainly didn't love. Now, I tend to agree with David Starkey that Catherine was likely not a virgin when she married Henry and that her caretaker's household was incredibly negligent towards preserving young women's virtue (a key point of value in the age). Catherine was taken advantage of by at least 1 older man at a fairly young age under this care, and she was extremely ill prepared for the politics of court. This was akin to throwing a mouse into a den of hungry snakes. That said, she was privy to her cousin's history and had some idea of the behavioural standards expected of queens, especially those of the sexual nature, so it was utterly foolish to show ANY affection to any man besides the king, no matter how much her young heart may have desired otherwise. Putting her desires in writing effectively signed her own death warrant and forced Henry's hand to execute her.

Recently, the world watched a modern 15 year old victim of abuse face consequences of the actions of the adults around her. I couldn't help but think of Kamila Valieva while listening to Catherine's story. No, she didn't lose her head, but her life was destroyed. At only 15 years old. Well, I don’t think she can be blamed before what she did before she married Henry. That’s just silly. Even for the day. What does get me is that Henry had a reputation, and she willingly snuck off and courted Culpepper, but it does appear she, though lovely and vibrant, was not the most intelligent. I feel that she probably loved Henry VIII in some sort of way, but he did start to ignore her, and that can really bruise someone’s ego and trouble them. I agree, the evidence points to consensual relationship as opposed to the opposite. There’s a lot of evidence but what I’ve always found to be the most convincing is that she is one that ended both relationships. She wasn’t used and dropped, she dropped them. I think she was a lot stronger than people gave her enough credit. Though obviously she the relationships were still extremely inappropriate and predatory by today’s standards! I think Catherine did an amazing job acclimating to a position for which she had no prior training or upbringing. The double standard has been mentioned here. Indeed, this insidious mechanism is the rancid glue that holds all patriarchal systems in check. Glad you mention the portrait that is now considered to be Anne of Cleves, which I think is true. The difference in hair color is not something one can judge from these, since paint color can change over the years, and also the way the hair is worn can give it a dark or lighter look. Also, the artist might give the hair a lighter or darker look. The thing about the miniature that really gets me is that she DOES resemble a more mature person than Katherine was while Queen~ With as you say, the soft chin, and also for my eye, the facial features resembling A of C, Henry would NOT have been attracted to another person who looked vaguely like her! This is a wonderfully redemptive portrait of a teenaged girl in extraordinary circumstances. Great work. There's nothing much admirable about Henry VIII after his early years. Whether it was the head injuries, the leg wound, something more insidious like syphilus, or whether he was just a narcissist, he doesn't seem to have done anything good for England- and murdered tens of thousands of people in his stupid protestant reformation. I don't know why the Brits romanticize their monarchs so much. When has the monarchy ever benefited the common person?
