Danish potter, Anne Mette Hjortshøj lives and works on the small island of Bornholm, situated in the Baltic Sea.
Our documentary gives a gentle and revealing insight into one of Denmark's leading potters. It follows Hjortshøj's daily life; collecting clay from the local beach for her glazes, throwing and making pots in her studio, and talking about the firing of her two chamber wood-fired salt kiln and its role in producing the decorative aspects of her work. We learn of her influences both within and outside of the Danish potting tradition and the inspiration she takes from the nature of the island.
Her pots are characterised by a quiet dignity, entirely in tune with her surroundings and with the greatest respect for both beauty and function.

Biography - Anne Mette Hjortshøj began her career in ceramics with a student apprenticeship to fellow potter Phil Rogers in 1998. Rogers has said that he was apprehensive before he met her; with her arrival, however, he knew instinctively that Anne Mette was not only humble and attentive but greatly talented, displaying inner strength and determination that will ensure a long and creative career.
Anne Mette has built three large kilns in her native Denmark, the latest a two chamber wood firing kiln built in September 2011 at her ramshackle farmhouse on the west coast of Bornholm. Though all her pots exhibit her desire to challenge herself in glaze and form, her slab bottles are certainly Anne Mette's tour de force. Her pottery combines beautiful aesthetics with a function befitting the hardiest domestic ware.

what I like about this video is that the aesthetics are not forced upon, so called based on "being moral", that dictates what's right and wrong, which is pervasive teaching in Korean art education in general, including pottery. In terms of "mastery", there might be right or wrong, but it keeps one away from feeling what's beautiful personally, the personal conversation and journey with clay. Her way of approach made me see that. So much thanks to her and the video :)

Very nice work Anne, a wonderful video too. The island looks like a beautiful and challanging place to work. I love the results from the wood fire, I know that it is so much work but the results can be so right with the clay. If you ever come to Sothern California, come by my studio for a visit, my wife and I are potters too.

I loved your film about your work and life in Bornholm. Also to learn about your use of local material in your glazes. I have used fireplace wood ash for several years and always try to find a single batch of ash that provides a natural texture and colour. I was taken by your idea of adding iron-bearing (common) clay to an ash glaze. I have to try this. Happy life to you Anne. I will eagerly look forward to more video of your works and life sometime. How would we have worked out our past without the pieces of ceramics that made up the puzzle of human civilisation? Each shard a pointer to the way we viewed our world at the time the pot was used. Should not every potter take a leaf from this book and ask “is this thing I am making worthy of being a signpost of our time?” More is worse than less if it is fatuous and irrelevant. If one item can carry the essence of our time, once made, that is, perhaps, enough.
