I’m a beginning jewelry maker and I bought aluminum as an inexpensive practice metal and MELTED it! Thankful that you made this video- it’s helpful for me even though I don’t know about most of what you’re describing in this video! 😉

If I can tell you anything about metal is one thing that you start to become a metallurgist study the properties, melting points ect . And it will help you so much more good luck on your new endeavor.my grandmother was a jewelry maker for years and it’s very intriguing, she made all her jewelry from scratch material gold ,silver .it’s truly an art

Good tip, I'm still surprised sometimes how many guys don't know the basics.

That’s what I am trying to tech people so half of the stuff that comes in my shop will stop. Everybody thinks they can fix something and that is flat out wrong ,I have to do more redos on customers cars then I can count

@@Iconicmetalworks I've made a lot of money over the years re-doing welding jobs done by guys with a $100 Home Depot welder and no training, I understand. I also get that a diy'er wants to be learn and let his skills develop but not on a broken truck chassis.

Another "Basic" is that when the black Carbon coating warms up it will combine with Oxygen from the torch (and the atmosphere) to convert that Carbon coating into colorless Carbon DiOxide (CO2) gas. No mystery at all.
@Iconicmetalworks
@Iconicmetalworks Ай бұрын
@Joe-S-AK.andID. The black carbon burns off at. A certain temp . Which is the same temp that it takes alum to become aneled or softened it takes the aluminum to the point between solid and liquid. Any more heat would make the aluminum turn to a liquid.

Shot in the dark here but you're clearly the man to ask. *Thick Aluminum* - I need to bend an all aluminum Grab Bar for my Tri-Z (3-wheeler/ATV). It's a Professionally custom made unit for another machine (85/86 ATC250R) but I've had it for so long it's almost got some feelins to me & I'd love to make it work. It's essentially too wide & rather than doing spacers/whatever I'm confident adding a 2-2.5 +/- inch 90 degree bend on one or both sides would do me.

You need to quench in water the same as you would copper annealing. Theres no carbon so quenching won't make it brittle

That's very interesting to me since I work with these old GM and MCI buses that have a lot of aluminum panels that have to bee repaired. Can you show a video of tig welding up a hole in aluminum panels and putting in patches on panels also?
@Iconicmetalworks
@Iconicmetalworks 5 жыл бұрын
A hole is impossible to weld in a thin aluminum sheet but you make a patch if you clean it up with a unibit then weld it. I’ll see what I can do over the break

You can definitely anneal steel. When I offer steel for knife making, I order the annealed steel, because it’s easier to grind.

Once the desired shape is acheived .... is there a way to heat it so it gets its rigidity and strength back ? Thanks
@Iconicmetalworks
@Iconicmetalworks Жыл бұрын
You soften it because of work harding and continue to work it to your desired shape which will work harden back or some so theres no need to to heat it this process will only make it softer

What if you have a sheet and you just want to make a slight bend in a straight line? Would you bother annealing it? Something around a 25 degree bend. Looking to make a custom fender eliminator for a motorcycle and the taillight will be on the top of the bend, under the seat. Not really load bearing, but want to be safe.
@Iconicmetalworks
@Iconicmetalworks 4 жыл бұрын
I I would not anneal it you have to shape it first in the wheeling machine and have beading die or cut the fender in half and re weld then sand to a peak of your desired look

Will the aluminum return to its previous rigidity?
@Iconicmetalworks
@Iconicmetalworks 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it will get work hardend from shaping it and bring rigidity back to the panel

So basically once you anneal aluminum the integrity is lost. Even when it cools down and you work it you still are left with a much more pliable aluminum than when you started. Again that just ruins the rigidity of the aluminum which defeats the purpose of having a high grade aluminum such as 6061 or 7075 for strength purposes.
@Iconicmetalworks
@Iconicmetalworks 3 жыл бұрын
Not really it work hard ends if your building body panels it’s ok but if your wanting some billet item from 6061 then machine it for body panels we usually use 3003 grade which is soft anyway and it will work harden much stronger the.what we started with
@kurtludwig4783

Can you anneal a piece of aluminum more than once? I watch Lazze too and Ron Covell . Trying to get started on forming an Anglia body. Cannot find 3003 H14 .063 aluminum. I knew about annealing but didn’t know it harden back up after working it a short time. I have full panels to form 5052 is available locally for me

Annealing Is heat treatment That alters the physical chemical properties Of material. to reduce its hardness thats what Im achieving here in this video making the material soft and pliable to work.
@frab88
@frab88 3 жыл бұрын
Proper annealing has to be done in a furnace, with a controlled cool down slope. It's just a matter of slow you let the material cool down.
