I train Police K9 for more than 30 years now. I have had them all, German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois and the Dutch Shepherd. The Dutch Shepherd will ever be my favorite. Never mistaken a Belgian Malinois for a Dutch Shepherd when it comes to character because they are many differences. Today, I have two Dutch Shepherds I train with, every day it is a blessing to work with them.

I’ve owned a Labrador Retriever, Greyhound, and Dachshunds. 3 years ago my daughter surprised me with a Dutch Shepherd puppy. At the time I didn’t want another dog, but I kept her. Boy oh boy am I happy I did! She is an exceptional dog….super smart, sensitive, athletic, adores affection and people who pay attention to her, quirky (but she’s an Aquarius too 😅), loving, not an excessive barker, looks intimidating but is actually a big baby who loves belly rubs, and is my very best friend on this planet. I sleep with her and I’ve never slept with any of my other dogs. The bond with her is indescribable. My Lab was also very smart and super friendly but he never really matured 😂 and he was a puppy at heart until we had to put him down at age 14. My Dutchie is almost 4 and she is fairly mature and has been for some time. Lab was a big goofy friendly dog who loved everyone and everything 🤎 Dutchie is friendly and seeks out affection from people but is cautious around people she isn’t used to (she is afraid of small children and African American people). My Lab would not have discriminated like that. Dutchie is friendly to a point. P.S. Greyhound was not the brightest dog. A sweetie for sure. Neurotic. Anxious. Loving. Friendly. Did I mention anxious? Dachshunds are my soul dogs. I lost my sweet Mya who was 17 years old this past February. She was my buddy/bestie/companion. She was spunky, loving, smart, athletic, had a zest for life, and we were inseparable. I miss her terribly.

Animal Watch is unique because you cover dogs that are rarely shown, I.e., the extreme working aspect of the canine spectrum, definitely no tiny toy dogs that look and behave like cuddly stuffed animals. Yet when you see how the ancient wolf has been reshaped into such a wide range of dog sizes, personalities, and behaviors, it’s amazing! Good job on this video!

I have a 4 month old Dutch Shepherd and the intelligence and trainability of this little guy amazes me every single day. Due to covid and lockdowns where I live he hasn't been able to do puppy school yet but I have been working daily on his obedience as tricks and he is way more advanced than many dogs at higher levels at dog club. He just wants to learn and please me. Although he is a very friendly dog and loves everyone he is a one person dog still and is loyal to me

@@tsal677 myself, if he gets to aggressive, scold him and put him back into his crate. Get a dog crate if you dont have one. I had a German Shepherd for twelve years, she had hip dysplasia in her later years. But she would go into the large crate as a sense of being comfortable, the door was always open for her. She new it was hers. Now this training may last until age seven, things can take time. Im by no means a professional dog trainer, just relaying my experiences. Good luck

Just saw this video today. My Dutch Shepherd, Jon Snow, is 6 years old. Before actually purchasing him I researched the breed and breeders for several months. I was lucky to locate a reputable breeder who lived a few hours away. We communicated for weeks about my expectations, the breeder's expectations, the environment the puppy would live in, etc. 5 or 6 months later I picked up my puppy. Vet visits. Puppy Socialization classes. Puppy Obedience classes. Advanced Obedience. He slept in a crate for a few months and only had access to a small portion of the house. I usually walked him, in the morning, for a short distance until he grew stronger. My wife let him out in the yard and worked with him a bit until I got home from work. In the evenings another walk. Every walk was also training. At 6 or 7 months he would either sleep in his crate or the mud room where his crate was located. If my wife left the house he was either in his crate or with her. Later, I enrolled him in Master Protection classes and later Scent work. A few months after turning 1 he had more access to the house. By 2 he had full access and no longer had to sleep in his crate or the mud room. He also had full access to the house when we were gone. He has NEVER destroyed any furniture, shoes, clothing or chewing on the walls. We allow him to meet and interact with close relatives, friends, and their children. He does very well with our special needs son. Training is ongoing. He is great off-leash. Obedient. Loyal. Smart. Protective. He is a great dog and friend.

You probably can afford one , its not a very expensive dog ( only when coming from special lines you will pay high prices ) An average Dutch shephard coming from regular lines wich often are just enough for your family and semi protective and working ability,s are payable . One thing i would do in such case is to closely study the behaviour from parent dogs. When you put a lot off effort in this breed you will get it back a 100 times👍🏽

Hi, Anneka! Loved the video. I’ve been thinking about getting a Shepherd for a while and if I was younger and more active, a Dutch Shepherd would be a definite option. I find myself leaning towards a German Shepherd for that reason but haven’t made a decision yet. We just lost our Shih Tzu due to congestive heart disease and not ready for a new pup yet. I used to own, show, and breed Siberians in the late 70’s and 80’s but as a healthy and active youth who had a seemingly natural affinity for wolves and Northern breeds, the Siberians were a natural choice that I would not be able to handle currently. Wolves are still my favorite canine but I know that they are not a good choice for a “pet.” Owning and operating a wolf rescue and sanctuary used to be a dream of mine but it’s not an option at this stage in my life. I greatly admire the things you have done and am envious of the different canines you have had. Envious isn’t the right word but you know what I mean. Keep making these great videos and sharing the beautiful wolves, wolf-dogs, and other canines. Love you!❤

They are extremely smart ... Totally human inteigence. I said to my husband - this dog is a mix between a dog, a cat and a alien or human..deff. not a DOG.. Lol... They must be a missing link betwen humans and dogs. Lol!! and if you do not work WITH them they will be a problem.. They are infact very sensitive so many dutchies has been ruined because they look so damn tough but needs a very sensitive hand. You need to be smart to own one ( sounds like you are that :) because you need to outsmart them to get 100% And they must never be forced against their will. .. but if you respect them and work WITH them and they feel that you are on their team they ill do ANYTHING for you.. They need to do different problem solving - not running after a ball every day because that creates so much stress in them and gets the cortisol level superhigh making the threshold for frustration very low.. . They need to use their brain A LOT .. and that takes very much effort from the owner. A lot of cool braingames.. I have the hghest respect for people who decide to rehome a dog they do not match with for any reason - but deff. find a experienced Dutchie only rescue or a police K9 unit that can take the dog. They deserve that :) Good luck what every you decide... GSDs are VERY cool. have owned that for 32 years and would highly recomend the breed. :)

I've wanted a Dutch shepherd all my life - and just a few months ago finally brought one into the family. A 4yr-old purebred rescue - if you can believe that! She was a surrender to our local Humane Society shelter from an elderly couple that couldn't care for her any longer. She was obviously well-cared for and spoiled...and at 110lbs somewhat overweight and likely fed human food table scraps. But we now have her on a proper diet and she's shed 15lbs by playing with our two shepweilers everyday. She's healthy as an ox - incredibly strong - love her to death. And true to their breed she's a natural-born thief, lol.

The Dutch Shepherd breed did face significant challenges during World War II, including a drastic reduction in population. Many of these dogs were used in the war effort, and post-war economic difficulties led to further declines as fewer resources were available for breeding and maintaining working dogs. However, the breed was not entirely wiped out. Dedicated breeders and enthusiasts worked diligently to preserve and revive the Dutch Shepherd. After the war, concerted efforts were made to restore the breed's population by carefully selecting and breeding the remaining dogs. These efforts were supported by breed clubs and organizations in the Netherlands and internationally. The Dutch Shepherd's recovery involved: Careful Breeding Programs: Breeders selected the best remaining dogs that exhibited the key characteristics and temperament of the breed. They focused on maintaining genetic diversity and health. International Collaboration: Breeders from various countries worked together to share breeding stock and knowledge, helping to reestablish the breed globally. Kennel Club Support: Recognition and support from kennel clubs, such as the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and later the American Kennel Club (AKC), helped to formalize breeding standards and encourage responsible breeding practices. Focus on Working Abilities: The breed's strong working abilities and versatility were emphasized, ensuring that the Dutch Shepherd remained valued not just as a show dog but also as a working and companion animal. As a result of these efforts, the Dutch Shepherd has been successfully preserved and continues to thrive today. There are established breeding programs and breed clubs dedicated to the health, preservation, and promotion of this versatile and intelligent breed.

@Dove Humbug, what is your point of your message .... ? Jesus died because the Roman empire nailed him to a cross. He did not die because of love for me, he had no notion of me. He might have smokes to much grass to come up with the God fantasy. In essence he might have been a cool dude with good ideas. So far no one rose from the dead so I sent that to the land of fairy tales. Dead is dead. The ten commandments are just guidelines which are normal in any civilized community how people should live together. Nothing Christian about it, the Buddhist had them long before Christianity. Christians just borrowed them for their cause to dominate. You have a very negative view of the world and people by saying that most of us are lying thieving blasphemous adulterer at heart and deserve hell. I did not break any law and for sure not a law you and your religion made up and pushed into people's faces. It is sad that you need some man made fantasy to give your life meaning. I laugh my ass off to hear how much you people believe in the afterlife and just cannot handle the notion that we have one life and after that it is over. That makes the most sense. I stick to Darwin and evolution. George Carlin has something to say about it go see Religion is bullshit on KZbin.

My Dutchie here in Australia always lets me know when a stranger walks up my driveway but once he knows everything is ok the only danger he poses is his wagging tail. His mere appearance is enough to deter problems but he's a big sook. I haven't trained him to be interested in prey or bite work. He's a lover, not a fighter. But when he was younger he was good at dry-land dog sledding, tracking and sheep herding (living up to the 'shepherd' name).

I could be wrong but did they say 'Los' when the dog needs to let go? That would be cool because 'los' is the let go command in Dutch. ('los laten' means 'to let go' or 'drop') So beautiful to see these dogs. I have to say they are not that well known here in the Netherlands compared to other breeds.

That's where some really terrific lineages spring from. My "little" gyp, Kimber, is 50-50 Malinois-Dutchie, purchased in the States, and both sides are in fact derived largely out of the Netherlands of KNPV working dog stock only a couple/few generations out. It's so impressive to see her very judiciously apply that deeply inherent protection instinct of me. If it's an animal that she's views to be a threat there's a hard an fast red line and it's very quick, extremely decisive, and downright smart. If it's a friendly (my older non shepherd Sako) merely aggravating me by jumping on me, it's careful but clear and decisive removal via a back of the collar tugging or pull off by deep back of the neck soft-mouthing, and if it's friendlies (friends/family.or presumed), it's fast and firm but mere insertion with some high pitched whining therebetween until the "threat" is beyond her perceived red line. This is ALL absolutely 100% self motivated and fully self carried out. Obviously, this is one tiny amount of similar sorts of behaviors deeply inherent in these animals, and it's the picking and choosing of degree and the spot on accuracy if her assessments that impress me so much. At 5 and 1/2 months old she took two back to back hits from a copperhead here in the yard when I bumped it accidentally from under a board. At the time, Kimber was the only one here who hadn't been bit by one over the years here ... including me. It's nothing to play with and it terrified me to see her take those two hits...neck and chest...and start swelling immediately. She hit it like a rat, pouncing and pinning, a HUGE mistake until her Aunt Sako did a quick drive by with dispatch to show her how it's done. Within a week she came across a big chicken snake and it was if she channeled Sako. Quick to learn, highly intelligent, absolutely no bullshit, deeply loving, supremely protective and very adaptive, you simply cannot go wrong with either the Dutchie or the Malinois...or like me, the cross thereof. Do yourself and the dog much more than a favor - know what you're signing up for. If they are for you and you for them, the rewards of ownership are innumerable. It sounds a bit silly I realize, but it's more of a partnership than "ownership". God, I love my little girl.

We have a Dutch Shepard for 8 years now. We have pigs chicken and he Shepard s the animals to their pens and if animals get out he rounds them back to our yard. He is so smart and protects our animals. Our pappa pig got out and went to eat the baby chicks. Scooby chased and nipped the pigs ankle until he dropped the chick out of his mouth. He will not chase any animal we show is part of our family. He does chase squirrels birds and critters not our own. He learns tricks easily and is really obedient and knows how to open doors and loves to be scratched. This breed is wonderful. So gentle with kids but barks like crazy when strangers come into our yard. We will place food in front of him and tell him no and he won't touch it til we tell him too. He is so smart and loving.

There's the German Shepherd and there's the Malinois, or Belgian Shepherd. And then there's the Dutch Shepherd, which is all three rolled into one. I had one, and it was a long learning curve from start to finish. Dutch Shepherds are simply out of this world and sometimes you wonder if they're "real," meaning, you see them do things that your eyes can see but your mind tells you shouldn't be possible! A Dutch Shepherd's speed, power and intensity can in fact be quite frightening, but I think that what sets them really apart is their insane energy levels!

These Dutch Shepherds are brn Dutch shepherds. Which means they are mixed, but very selectively bred. The sire of that puppy has American Pitbull Terrier in him. @Amer Hamad less aggressive by what I have read. Bred from a German shepard and Alaskan malamute. But they get larger than both. Considered a giant breed. Although the malimutes tend to be more food aggressive. They also are not known to be affectionate dogs. They say the shiloh shepard is a gentle giant and very loving. Also less likely to bite than the German shepards they are bred from. Also there is the king shepard which is bred from the shiloh and large German shepards. Looks like a fluffy giant German shepard. Roughly the same size as the shiloh shepard. Similar temperament. Both would be cool dogs to do videos on. King shepards are a very new breed.

I haven’t got a great deal of experience on Dutchies but I think they’re even less forgiving than malinois if the handler isn’t self assured enough. The malinois will probably still be somewhat of a manageable dog with less confident handlers (it’s still very sub optimal obviously) but a Dutch will just give you the middle finger and harass you. That’s my unprofessional view on them:)

That's not always the case. It's all in how the owner cares for a "pet" dog. I've seen miserable guard dogs, elated pet dogs, and vice versa. It's all in how the animal is cared for, trained, and socialized.
@HoseTheBeast

Every normal pet dog should get enough action and exercise. And I think people should just take their dogs with them everywhere. The thing most dogs like the most is doing things with their owners. Going to places. You shouldn’t just stop once you feel ”he is socialized now” just continue take your buddy everywhere and make it into a training at the same time. Your dog will be so much happier and at the same time so much more trained for any kind of enviroment and surrounding.
