At the end of 1971 and early 1972 I worked in a nearly deserted 7-11 grocery store in the edge of town working the 3-11P.M. shift. It was dead dark outside and bright inside. With nearly no customers all shift I listened to the radio and anxiously await the birth of our first child. This song played over and over and I loved it. Then January 28, 1972 our Son was born and I will never hear this song without remembering those long nights waiting for my first born to arrive and the joy when I got the call to rush to the hospital. 49 years later it still has the same affect on me.

It's sad at the start, but wistful at the end. This song came out when I was kid in elementary school, and even at that age, we parsed the meaning endlessly. Somewhere, I have a 1972 newspaper article that my mother cut out that interpreted on an adult level. The adults got more of it than we did, but we kept parsing all the way through high school and got more and more.

"The church bells all were broken..." * ding dong ding * Wait a minute... I didn't think I'd like a mellowed out version of this song. I thought it would take away the frustration present throughout it, the overtones of lament, the undertones of anger... Instead what you've produced is something with a sweet sentimentality that was never present in the original version. It's gentler, more passive aggressive, and sadder than what McLean arranged, and I think it's brilliant. Bravo, my friend. Bravo 👏❤

This is a real masterpiece. So much analysis here to be had. Really love the arrangement, seems more beautiful than the rather sad original, just a flicker of upbeat without overdoing it. Also the breathing skills required to pull off singing the verses in 1 take, something only a trained vocalist can pull off. They should be using this clip to showcase the technique in schools. Really liked this one, solid all round production.

Absolutely riveting. This pop song is one of the few that deserves to be called poetry. Layers and layers of meaning, depths to be plumbed... And you have given us layers and layers, too. I've never heard an interpretation of 'American Pie' that so ably emphasizes the poetic nature of the lyrics. You gave us soft and fragile vocals; what we usually get in covers is more assertive, more forceful, even happy, but all of that runs counter to the poem itself, which is bewildered, full of loss and defeat. In short, yours is the truest interpretation I've ever heard.

Not sure if it has been said here, but this song was about the death of Buddy Holly, who was known as the Jester. The King was most likely Elvis Presley. Buddy Holly died in a plane crash and Don MclLean could not understand why God would take someone who pleased many with his music. When you know that back story it is hard to sing it without choking up at the immense sadness that inspired this great work of art. So well done to Anne for doing this cover version.

She is not crushed under the weight of a record company, an entourage, or supporting band. The covers are often as good or better than the original artist’s efforts. One of the positives, if the only positive, of the current pandemic has been discovering the talents of others that otherwise wouldn't have been seen. That was a beautiful arrangement, Anne. And a great video as well! ... "The Day The Music Died" is February 3, 1959, when Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash after a concert. McLean wrote the song from his memories of the event ("Dedicated to Buddy Holly" was printed on the back of the album cover). McLean was a 13-year-old paperboy in New Rochelle, New York when Holly died. He learned about the plane crash when he cut into his stack of papers and saw the lead story. Reportedly, The levee Don is referring to was The Levee, a bar down the block from Don's high school (Iona Prep) in New Rochelle, NY. It is now the Beechmont Tavern. American Pie Don McLean A long long time ago I can still remember how That music used to make me smile And I knew if I had my chance That I could make those people dance And maybe they'd be happy for a while But February made me shiver With every paper I'd deliver Bad news on the doorstep I couldn't take one more step I can't remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride Something touched me deep inside The day the music died So Bye, bye Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye Singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die Did you write the book of love And do you have faith in God above If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock and roll? Can music save your mortal soul? And can you teach me how to dance real slow? Well, I know that you're in love with him 'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym You both kicked off your shoes Man, I dig those rhythm and blues I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck With a pink carnation and a pickup truck But I knew I was out of luck The day the music died I started singin' Bye, bye Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye Singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die Now, for ten years we've been on our own And moss grows fat on a rolling stone But, that's not how it used to be When the jester sang for the king and queen In a coat he borrowed from James Dean And a voice that came from you and me Oh and while the king was looking down The jester stole his thorny crown The courtroom was adjourned No verdict was returned And while Lennon read a book on Marx The quartet practiced in the park And we sang dirges in the dark The day the music died We were singin' Bye, bye Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye And singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die Helter skelter in a summer swelter The birds flew off with a fallout shelter Eight miles high and falling fast It landed foul on the grass The players tried for a forward pass With the jester on the sidelines in a cast Now the half-time air was sweet perfume While sergeants played a marching tune We all got up to dance Oh, but we never got the chance 'Cause the players tried to take the field The marching band refused to yield Do you recall what was revealed The day the music died? We started singin' Bye, bye Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye And singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die Oh, and there we were all in one place A generation lost in space With no time left to start again So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick Jack Flash sat on a candlestick 'Cause fire is the devil's only friend Oh and as I watched him on the stage My hands were clenched in fists of rage No angel born in Hell Could break that Satan's spell And as the flames climbed high into the night To light the sacrificial rite I saw Satan laughing with delight The day the music died He was singin' Bye, bye Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye Singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die I met a girl who sang the blues And I asked her for some happy news But she just smiled and turned away I went down to the sacred store Where I'd heard the music years before But the man there said the music wouldn't play And in the streets the children screamed The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed But not a word was spoken The church bells all were broken And the three men I admire most The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost They caught the last train for the coast The day the music died And they were singing Bye, bye Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye Singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die They were singing Bye, bye Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye Singin' this'll be the day that I die

This is just beautiful! It’s one of the greatest songs ever written; and this is now one of my favourite versions. Another great Don McLean song to cover this way, would be ‘Empty Chairs; it’s an achingly beautiful number, which might not be as well known as ‘American Pie’, or ‘Vincent’- another song that would be great to cover; but I think it’s as good as both of them, and one of the most beautiful songs ever written. ‘Empty Chairs’ was a major inspiration for the song ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song’, according Lori Lieberman; who was both the first person to release a version of the song, and is credited as one of the writers; she claims to have got the inspiration for the lyrics, while attending a Don McLean show, and seeing him playing ‘Empty Chairs’.

Wow. What a great rendition of this classic song. I have a copy of it, but, it is an edited version. I knew there was a longer version that even the radio station I used to listen to wouldn’t play due to its length. Thank you for letting me finally here all the verses. You made this 52 year old very happy. The only thing that would’ve made it better was if I had seen this video when you published it, which happened to be my birthday. KZbin strikes again. I’m definitely going to subscribe as soon as I finish this comment.
