I always felt, instinctively, that she wasn't really a music person. She was just a middle-class bbc stooge. That the music thing was given to her rather than being something inate. That she could just as well have been a broadcaster of marshmellow consistency - Whatever role the bbc gave her. So there!

Does the BBC have to turn everything into a campaign for minority rights? Annie was a wonderful broadcaster who, along with John Peel & Whispering Bob, did so much to open our ears to alternative music. Yet here we have two people talking about her with no feel whatsoever for what made her special. RIP Annie, you deserve better from the organisation for which you did so much.

Sad that the BBC keep harping on about her being a woman in a mans world rather than on her ability, knowledge and enthusiasm , and what a sad loss her passing is.
@MrDannyDetail11 ай бұрын
@@tridaks It is a very important aspect of her story, and most people listening to Radio 1 nowadays would not have been alive in those days, and might not know much about the era, and even many watching BBC News might be too young and/or not know either, so it was worth mentioning how much of a trailblazer she was.
@cosmicstargazer1011 ай бұрын
@@MrDannyDetail agreed, in this modern era of equality & whatnot, it doesn't matter about gender. But, in the olden days, those of us that were already adults at the turn of the century, to us, Annie was at first novel, then she seemed to blaze a dazzling & inimitable trail, for music & getting it to the masses of us, hungry for the creme de la creme & did a world of good for the sisterhood. Nightingale, soar high above the clouds, inspire from behind the veil. R.I.P.
@andrewgage694210 ай бұрын
Annie Nightingale, John Peel, John Walters, without these wonderful people, would punk, house, rock etc ever have come to light or would it have just been an underground thing? What made Annie Nightingale so special was that she really opened the door for more women to come into the radio, journalism and music industry, without Annie Nightingale, would we have heard of Janice Long, Jakkie Brambles and the likes? Sadly we've lost John Peel, John Walters, Janice Long, Terry Wigan, and now Annie Nightingale, even though I don't listen to the BBC anymore as it's gotten boring and repetitive, the BBC upstairs have got an amazing line up now, remember Alexis Korner at 9pm on Sunday nights? Wigan on the breakfast show? Listening to John Peel underneath the bedsheets from 10 pm? Annie Nightingale on the late night weekends? Janice Long just before Peelie? The BBC may have gone downhill rapidly, but they introduced us to some wonderful personalities back in the day
