I totally agree with Annie the cut to 10 was too early and should of been done at the end of Saturday. In order to allow for a more type of event to be tested before making a final cut. The order of the events then become less important if you have more events before the final cut to 10. And Rory love the interviews you have been posted all weekend.

@@gilian2554 Programmed fairly ? Seriously ? 2 of 4 were just about running. In another 2 running was very important element. Not even one heavy weight movement during those 6. As a result 3 out of 10 "fittest" woman can not clean starting weight which should not be extremely heavy for top athletes. What is more, those sprint events are a joke when they are measuring times using those chips. This would be decent programming a year ago, but with those cutting it was a very poor one.

@@gilian2554 Look I understand what you are saying the 6 events were the same for everyone and they all had their chance to perform and get in. Clearly someone like Sara and Annie did not. Don't get me wrong the people in the top 10 deserved to be based on their performance. I just feel if we kept all the same event we had this weekend and we re-order them differently we would ended with a different to 10. That's why I think the final cut should of been at the end of Saturday to minimize that since more event had gone by.

Yes I agree with this comment. All of these athletes travel far and wide, sacrifice so much to get to the games. I would have preferred to see the majority cut by the end of Saturday. I felt cheated as a fan. I looked forward to watching Pat Velner, and the Dottirs. So I was a bit gutted they didnt make it thru.
@chadwickprice37615 жыл бұрын
@@gilian2554 that statement is spot on. Look I thought Sara had a chance to win from looking at what happened at Rogue, but I think these athletes got way to comfortable with the format in the past. Bottom line the goal is to win, and if you aren't going to win then don't go and don't compete. Thats why Tia and Mat win and I really don't see that changing anytime soon, their mindset is far above everyone else. It wouldn't have mattered who was in the top 10 for the females, Tia at the top would have been the result. and Katrin had a chance to get on the podium, but couldn't make it happen. Too many people are speaking from an emotional standpoint and not a logical standpoint.
@tomaszmarusik1575 жыл бұрын
@@gilian2554 - those are middleweight at this level of competition, and those were ok on this workout, especially considering it was a first one. But if you compare times, running made much bigger differences here, the same with those sled sprints. Plus you had two more strictly running events and no weights. If 3 out of 10 ladies from the final group can not clean starting weight, it just proves there was something wrong with the selection they have made. I believe It would be better to start with Mary, and instead of those sprints they could put there something with heavy lifts mixed with gymnastics. or some kind of conditioning.

I think Tia felt this way as well and she won. You could tell when she spoke about alot of her friends that didn't make the cut but she has to concentrate on what she can control. She knew that if she wins that in away it feel tainted a bit. Not taking anything from Tia because I think she wins no matter what but with other placements it could have been different.
@Emilyspace_5 жыл бұрын
That's also the reason she won so dominantly. All the women who could have challenged her in the second half of the events were already eliminated. Thorisdottir, Sigmundsdottir, Horvath, Wells, Pichelli, etc all would have done very well in the last day of events and might have changed the results dramatically. Same thing on the men's side. If Fikowski, Vellner, Hogberg, Georges, Sager, and Chandler Smith had all been in the field, the leaderboard would have looked very different. Not to mention that Moorad was a waste in that 10th place spot since he was injured for the rest of the competition. He should've pulled out before the final cut and given his spot to Sager.

Annie! Thank you for being authentic in such an emotion-filled moment. Your natural upbeat mindset comes through in all your honest reflections. With that said. You and the others were missed. This sport is built on community. The power of community and human connection is the force that drives us all to continue to push our bodies in this sport, in our gyms, and with our community. This was a huge missing element in the final ceremony. The atmosphere was anti-climatic and it felt empty like we were missing our community. The new chopping block style of the games is chopping more than athletes, it is chopping the very power of community that it is built on. It's a shame and very disappointing and the cuts hurt all of us. I started Crossfit in 2011 because I felt like I could see myself in this community, even at the games. The connection was real and that is why we are all "All IN". All the way through Sunday of the CFG! We hang with all our athletes no matter how far behind they get, because that is what we do in our Crossfit community workouts! We wait for all to finish! Everyone gets to finish!! Isn't that the point of all of this!?!?!? Never DNF!! And now it looks like the game maker wants to leave athletes behind and screw the power of community! Very poor decision making at the top. (JMO)

Cool thing of open talking to different athletes about 2019 Games. Just my opinion, similar to many already discussed is that giving opportunity to national champions come is great. They know the risk of being cut or not competitive, so they choose to come and participate or not. The cuts are also interesting to push the athletes to good in each and every event, but the early cut to 10 I think was too early and kind of feels that “are the top 10 really top 10”? Would they still be in that position if for example some events were made before? Not saying the guys deserves their spot, but just the feeling as we saw in the end some competition between only 3 or 4 people only. So it gave this feeling. Maybe, if necessary, the top 10 cut to be in a last or two last events. In general was good, but left this void feeling “is that it?”

Another vetran athlete, that I hoped was able to progress all the way to the end. A true sweetheart of the SPORT!!! I also agree, this years games weren't as balanced in terms of giving the athletes a fighting comeback chance as previous games done. The order of events this year pretty much dicated who was staying according to their strengths before getting cut. I hope Dave Castro improves the programming next year if they continue with cuts in the CrossFit Games going forward. Like what Annie said, having a more ALL ROUNDED events, touching on ALL ASPECTS of crossfit movements before hitting the cutting stages of the games. Ok, the 1st cut was neccessary as that SEPERATE the ELITE with the fit people all around the WORLD!!! I just hope Annie cames back next year as you can HEAR she still has so much FIRE in her. I do hope she OVERCOMES her mental game as it's just as IMPORTANT as her physical game. Like, Tia this year!!! Her mental GAME as off the charts!!! She has a good point: there needs to be more diversity of events before final cuts are made because some will excel in one event but not another. And if more people are allowed in the finals (e.g. 20 people instead of 10), it may allow for some exciting "dark horses" coming up unexpectedly and upsetting the field.

I can't seem to find a single athlete talking what's really going inside their head with the events used to cut and how the following events showed quite a few of the top ten where way out of their depth. Lately, CrossFit has gone after a few people that don't agree with their way and, unfortunately and understandably, these athletes don't want to risk their livelihood by speaking their mind. All power to you Annie and all the other top athletes that didn't get their chance to show and measure their true fitness. Can't wait to see you compete again and see what the games learn from this iteration for improving next year's cuts.

There didn't need to be that many athletes invited to begin with. It was ridiculous trying to have the whole United Nations parade and all to illustrate how diverse CrossFit is. Starting with 40 is a good number, drop to 10 at the very last event, and do cuts at the end of the day, not after a single event.

I follow the athletes through out the year, and admire the determination and comitment they put into this. As a fan of the CrossFit Games, I was very satisfied with the cuts and programming this year. I do agree with Annie that the field of competition was cut to 10 WAY too soon. My personal suggestion would be exactly what she said... cut the field to 20 on Friday evening, and cut to 10 on Saturday evening. Then let the top 10 smash it out for 3-4 events on Sunday with the huge points gaps looming. If they did this, and standardized it for every Games, they could still throw wrenches in by adding a late night workout for the top 20 on Friday night, or even one for the top 10 on Saturday night. It's a work in progress, and I think they are on the right track, but some perfecting needs to be done. Loved the interview.

I love Annie but does it really matter if she gets to say she is 5th fittest or 12th fittest? I know the abrupt conclusion to her weekend is anti-climatic and frustrating for her; but if the goal of the competition is to identify the fittest man and woman on earth, it did that. The sampling of modalities over the first 6 events established that Annie wasn’t the fittest woman on Earth. She was no longer part of the test at that point, just potentially part of the spectacle. If the fans want more spectacle and more consolation prizes, that’s fine too. I think that’s what the sanctionals are for though.

Ruza Roos I am a fan of Annie and the others who were cut as well. Every time she said however, it was erasing everything she said before that. Everyone deserved to be there. Matt and Tia has no problem keeping their spots. Heavy lifts do not equal the fittest. These athletes are supposed to be well rounded. In this case when it came up those were the fittest. The sprint was probably not the best to cut the last 10 on. The penalties for stepping on the lane lines made it too fiddly. Rory: Anyone saying that they deserve to be in the top 10 *IS* disparaging the top 10. Don't want to get cut? Go harder. Can't go harder? You're not fit enough. I stopped rooting for Stacey Tovar in 2014 when she complained she was "fitter than all the other girls on the floor" at Regionals. My OG gym owner was one of those girls, took 4th on the weekend. How is it that we are 10 years into Annie's career and she's still walking during running events? You want to win the Super Bowl? Better beat the teams in front of you. Don't talk about how you were so focused on playing the Patriots in the AFCC that you forgot to beat the Texans in the Wild Card.

I felt like I didn’t get what I wanted out of the games this year. It felt really empty and just not the same. I love tia BUT the true competitors that would of gave tia a run for her title we’re out.

She is classy! Hopefully they will make changes to the cut for next year. Let’s move on to prepping for the Open and put this discussion to rest. Please!

If i had 6 events to cut everyone till the top10, will be like this: Event 1= exactly the same...the pyramid of crossfit: running/cardio, bodyweight/gymnastics and barbell with a good weight Event 2: another one with 3 movements...cardio, gymnastics and lifts Event 3: big one for the cardio...like the Ruck run Event 4: big one for the gymnastics...like that one with hspu, pistols and pull UPS Event 5: big one for the lifts...like a overhead squats ladder or something Event 6: pure crossfit Sorry for my english

she's really smart thinking that being at 10 after Saturday morning was too early. it's true In my opinion. the war still there but with less intensity. maybe cutting the last 10 on the Sunday morning for next year...? she's the wiser...!!

This year WOD's and whole cf games was easier for smaller athletes. PERIOD!
