I was surprised too! This is a bit of a test, but the 4 people in the private beta test thought it was good value. (and I suppose the 3 people who also signed up just now!) I understand that this premium option isn't going to be good for most people, that's why I've capped it to 15 for now. Cadence may need to be more often for sure - but when I tutored a lot for high level sciences I found a higher hourly rate and shorter time slots (coming out to the same overall cost to the mentee) provided a much better experience for them and for myself. All which are possible to research but just being able to ask makes it save me a lot of time. Or in some cases where the documentation I find doesn’t make sense to me.

I have not been so mad about not using a language seriously before. I have barely touched Rust before and haven't started seriously learning it, mainly for the lack of free time. One on one mentoring, with someone who is better at programming as whole than I am, is something I have wanted for a long time, but such opportunity did not present itself in an obvious manner before. To be fair, I have not been looking that hard either, as I was more interested in actually learning about coding and development than researching where to get high-quality mentoring. However, with this offer alone you are making me really tempted to get into brewing up some project using Rust and properly learning its features and syntax. Wish you the best of luck with it!

Whenever someone asks me for advice like this, I quote Bo Burnham: "BUY LOTTERY TICKETS! THE SYSTEM WORKS!" The serious answer is that there are enough people who will pay for your content/art/teaching/whatever in the world RIGHT NOW. But they're needles in the haystack. This is the reason everyone's so obsessed with 'growing their audience', because they know they money just follows. Make good content, make it easy to get to, and the rest follows. If it doesn't work, try something else. KZbin and Patreon have created entire new industries that we're all kindof sleeping on. Tell me when you've uploaded your first thing, ping me when you post it on my Discord :-)

@@NoBoilerplate Thanks for the advice. The issue is that I don't think I would enjoy making videos, the part of teaching I love is interacting with the student, figuring out what's their level of understanding on a subject and make proper lessons based on that, what I mean is that I prefer teaching individuals rather than audiences.

@NoBoilerplate Жыл бұрын
Of the "NewSQL" database listed here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NewSQL I only recognise Couchbase, which I used in production in 2012ish. I don't hate the idea of bringing nosql to acid databases, that sounds cool. But I don't yet know enough about these databases to make a video on it. if it becomes more of a popular technique, I'll cover it! I really dig postgres for nearly everything, it can be a queue, a nosql json store, whatever you want, and sqlx supports it all!

Good suggestions Dani, I'm still feeling out this business, so I'll very likely do things like this in the future. if there's one thing I've learned from putting out videos and podcasts on Patreon is that you must always have an expensive premium option that seems preposterous to you. Patreon themselves suggest this, it's what my "sponsorship" tiers are for. You can't predict if you'll find those small handful of people that 1. really love your content and 2. have the means to support you at these high tiers. You will never find them if you don't give them the opportunity to pay you. I filled 13/15 slots on the mentoring tier overnight. I'm as astonished as you!

Can you teach me how to have such a lovely english accent? 🥵 (It's not my first language)
@NoBoilerplate Жыл бұрын
Firstly, thank you very much! Secondly, I'm afraid I was brought up to speak like this, I didn't learn it consciously. HOWEVER my father DID. He was brought up in a part of the UK that has a very strong accent, and when he started his career to become a teacher, they told him (in the 60s) that he had to learn to speak 'proper' English, or he wouldn't get any work. Obviously, this was not a fair policy, and I don't think this is the case today. But it is my personal example of hard work allowing you to change your accent. My advice is to practice practice practice. Get a tutor who speaks like me, if you want to speak like me, and if that's not possible then watch a lot of old British films and imitate their speech :-) In my own life, I *pronounce* Mandarin Chinese very well, though my vocabulary is very poor. I believe I learned better than my classmates because I CARE about pronunciation so much, so I made it a focus of my studies. (of course, now I have too small vocabulary, so I must focus here too!). What gets measured, gets managed. Good luck friend!
