Gentoo is better... nuf said. You don't even have it in the comparison chart at minute 1, granted it doesn't really fit the metric because you can't even measure that way but yeah... Gentoo is better.

I think linux works best on a laptop. Until games are actually compatible on Linux like they are on windows. There's a good number that are, and a great number that have issues or aren't.

I watched with interest. I did not understand it, but your enthusiasm shone through. As an end user, I have used Linux since the 90s. Like you, I have been frustrated by issues with a system that cause disruption and loss of work. I stumbled across a Distro named BigLinux OS. Developed in Brazil. This is the best Linux OS I have ever used. I have no idea if it comparable with NixOs but as a user who wants a rock sold Distro, that you can roll back if needed, that will install applications, even if they are not Arch derivations, that has web apps and Google apps already configured. It looks great, I have never had a glitch, and it just works out of the box. Brilliant.

This is extremely unhealthy and the benefit of time is small - you sleep totally 6 hrs (4.5 + 2 x 0.5), you could sleep normally 7 or 8 hours, so if you look that way polyphasic sleep gives you 2 hours of free time which ain't much given that you are going to ruin your health. Normal sleep is extremely important and kind of pushed away by the fast times we are living in, but the body doesn't care, it needs rest.

So much misinformation in this video: 1. RTX 4090 uses AD102, RTX4090 mobile uses AD103, totally different chip. 2. No way you can ugprade 8GB/512GB to 64GB/4TB for $300.

Great video! I’ve been using obsidian for a couple years after experiencing some Notion sync issues. My biggest reason to use it for daily note taking at my tech job is that it’s just a really really really smooth writing experience! And if you have an image in your clipboard then you can paste it into the markdown editor and it’ll write the image to file and then format the markdown appropriately for you. I write a lot of technical documentation (eg github readmes, coding tutorials) and obsidian is the only program I’ve found that combines writing + including images + latex + code formatting. You’ve just about convinced me to give obsidian sync a try

It's unbelievable how linux can revive older hardware. I have a laptop from 2011 with integrated graphics. I put an ssd in it, I put arch on it, and it became more than usable. It could be used for word processing, web browsing, even some light gaming, which is good enough for most people. And yet windows is forcing them to buy a new computer every few years...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE linux, for all the reasons you mentioned and more, but unfortunately I am a photographer and I need Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. The Wine compatibility is downright horrible and alternatives don't have stuff like presets and plugins that I use and can't live without. The day Adobe get's their head out of the gutter and make a Linux port, is the day all my machines are running fedora. Ah, don't you just love closed source software /s.

it is not so that only rem sleep is useful, and that waking rest does the same as deep sleep. It is during deep sleep that the brain gets rid of waste, literally flushing the brain with fluid. Doing less than 6 hours sleep will result in reduced cognitive ability, less energy and more emotional driven spontanious decision-making. For some this number is 9 hours, or in between. Psychosis is also a risk with staying awake for prolonged periods of time, because waste build up and reduces the functionality of the brain. This is no joke. That said, you might feel great, because one other side effect of sleeping little, is reduced anxiety. I theorize that this is because little sleep signals to the brain that danger is imminent and not to be planned for, but handled.

I love this, thank you! I've stumbled into becoming a programmer using no-code tools and now I'm building software for clients. Since building software was a hobby and the no-code space is tiny and somewhat disconnected/ostracised from CS circles I have found it hard to understand how to take an idea from a client and deliver. Estimation and over planning is truly a killer. Thanks again this helped me think a lot clearer about all this.

This video certainly has me wondering about the future of declarative systems. I know that Guix was inspired by NixOS and though I haven't tried it yet from some people that have tried both Nix and Guix there's apparently some things Guix does better simply because it could avoid the pitfalls using hindsight that NixOS has fallen in. Kind of like with Rust and C++. Though the thing that makes Guix pretty much just something to toy around with is since it's a FSF project it of course has the "No unfree software or firmware" baked into the repositories and kernel. Not sure if it's any better but it does use a Lisp type of language for configuration. I could easily see a future project or two that takes both NixOS and Guix as inspiration to make something even better. Maybe one project that will encounter even more pitfalls trying to do this but then either rise from the ashes of those pitfalls or a new project will pick up and make something that is "The Future" if you will. I'm just spitballing on how I've seen other projects, such as computer languages, evolve over the years.

Didn't know about the thing that reverting your build won't revert your configuration.nix file. I also noticed the error vomit that hits your screen for an unsuccessful build feels just wrong. I was able to figure it out but for an error message it absolutely sucks. Pretty much only the last lines matter since the errors I got were essentially "package not found" due to spelling errors such as Hyprland instead of hyprland, or that the package list on their website isn't completely up to date for how to install some packages such as plasma-desktop which said it wanted me to put it down as kdePackages.plasma-desktop but that's a lie and you should just do plasma-desktop. It would be nice if the errors were as good as git which will tell you what you might be wanting to use and it's pretty accurate. Where the error would say, "Hey, this isn't a package but maybe you we meant <this package> or <this package> instead," if possible.

Just getting into using NixOS after trying Arch and one of the interesting features I've liked is the `nix-shell` command. I don't know the details on how it works but it feels awesome since you can test a package on a separate shell (maybe think of it like docker) and if you don't like the package you can just exit the shell and the package is gone and you don't have to worry about cleaning up any .local or .config files/folders. Again, maybe I'm wrong about the details but it feels really neat.

Regarding the init system or even the bootloader when it comes to distributions it depends. For example, I would say that if you had the technical know how you could get vanilla Arch to use any init system but the work to do that has already been done on Artix so it's better to just use that. With NixOS with enough work it could use a different init system but again that takes a lot of work. So I guess I've kind of prove your point as the only distros that are more agnostic to their init systems are things like Gentoo or Void.

I started my programming journey with Python, and I still love the language for its simplicity and its ability to set things up and going. Then I heard about Rust, about how memory safe it is. It is a big step up, code seems harder to read at first. But the more I read, break down the syntax to understand what it does, I found clarity in Rust, it's predictable, it does what you tell it to and just you, or it can refuse to compile straight up, it wants you to be precise, and that has been the thing driving me to keep learning it.

Hi! I dont have the time to implement one of those polyphasic sleep right away however i tried getting a 20min nap/rest a few times i have a few questions, how the f do you not stress oversleeping? I had to forcefully stay in a awake/sleeping state( one that makes time go fast , i dont know if this has a name)
