English language video dialogue as text for online translation as requested. Some years back I made a new edition of Bach’s Goldberg Variations with the aim to make the notoriously difficult 2 manual variations more practical to play on our single manual modern piano without changing a single note or its duration. Thankfully Bach mainly wrote keyboard music (with the exception of pipe organ) for a single manual instrument, which means today, we can play almost all his keyboard music comfortably on piano. The Goldberg Variations, thanks in large part to 2 historically significant recordings by Glenn Gould, is now one of Bach’s best known - and best loved keyboard works. It has, at the same time, the reputation of being, in large part, fiendishly difficult to perform. The difficulties lie not entirely with the complexity of Bach’s keyboard writing in itself, rather performing complex passages that criss-cross up and down 2 independent manuals, on a single manual instrument - to most of us, that’s a piano, but it could equally be a single manual harpsichord. So, with the aim to make the Goldberg Variations more practical to play on the piano and so more accessible to many more pianists, I redivided the notation in the 2 manual variations and made fingering suggestions for the entire work. For those interested, I also made an overhead video recording from this new edition available on KZbin linked below. Here are excerpts from my recording of the 2 manual variations as newly arranged for piano. The clips feature Bach’s original score above the keyboard, so what I am playing is the same notes, same duration but the notes in many places, redivided between the hands. For some years my old rough-and-ready edition has been linked from this recording, but I was aware the many changes to the original score, made by hand, were not easy to read from. As time went by I was fortunate to meet and collaborate with pianist and transcriber Doug Gould in the UK. Doug rescued and revived this Goldberg project and took on the daunting task of newly typesetting the whole work, with notation software. After many months of work, I'm pleased to tell you Doug’s beautifully typeset new edition of Bach’s Goldberg Variations arranged for a single manual instrument” is now available. If you’re interested in owning a copy of this 94 page PDF, and many of you have expressed interest, it can be purchased directly from Doug Gould by Email. The price of this PDF in various currencies is listed in the video information, along with the purchase Email address: bachgoldberg1741@gmail.com I want to thank Doug Gould, not only for all the time and effort he put into making this new score but, also for the many expert insights and improvements he made to it along the way. We hope our edition will help and encourage those that want to study or perform the Goldberg Variations, by offering practical solutions to performing a work for 2 manuals as if written for a single manual instrument. Please see all relevant links to the sheet music in the video information and thanks for watching! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ The PDF edition comprises 94 pages and is available by Email only from Doug Gould at: bachgoldberg1741@gmail.com The cost of this edition is: £18 pounds €20 Euros $24 dollars USD Payments by Paypal only.

It is unbelievable how much work you accomplish, Paul. Of the highest quality, so useful, a real contribution to the music community. My respect & admiration of you never diminish. I think your recordings/interpretations of these Goldbergs are every bit as good as Tureck's, Gould's, and Angela Hewit, Andras Schiff (those are my 4 favourite recordings). You have such a clarity (like Gould) and the voicing of the important notes (Hewitt does that so well too). I will be returning to your Goldberg videos as I continue to study these works. Thanks for your work. This is worthy of a Ph.D. thesis! Truly world class!

Dear Paul, I have followed your brilliant teachings and performances on you tub for years. I'm so grateful that you share your prodigious artistry so freely and I think with this performance you have firmly established yourself as one of the finest pianists of a long array of great pianists performing on KZbin. This is great performance. I hope your elephant friends appreciate it as well. Thank you.

Paul Barton is a genius! Period! I never really enjoyed Glenn Gould's performances; I could never get past the little chair and all the quirky behaviors. Paul gives a solid performance minus the humming and conducting the imaginary orchestra. It's more like what Bach would have sounded like if he had a great grand piano! Perform, let the crowd go mad, have a brandy and go to bed. That's the English way! Thank you Paul! I can't get enough. Laurin

Hi Paul I have been waiting for this score from you for a little while now. I am a little bit disappointed that there is no hard copy version of the score that I can purchase, but never mind. I would like to have a look at what the notation looks like, would you be able to post an excerpt from say variation 5 showing how the notes are modified exactly?

One question: Did you change the octaves (pitch) of any notes? From your description i think you don't. I'm not for or against that, it could make some passages easier, and maybe even improve the separation of voices hearing-wise, but it would change the original intention of course. In any case, fantastic idea, I've started learning the variations in the past, and I'd love to do it again using your version. I always found the two-manual variations awkward and frustratingly unfitting or hard to do justice with single-manual playing, because the crossing and repetition of tones between voices makes them unclear. I'm sure your version makes that significantly easier!

Did you change the octaves (pitch) of any notes? no, there's not a single change, just the notes are re-divided between the hands making them more comfortable to play. I hope you take up the Goldberg again and find the new edition helpful.

The reason is simply that the German pronunciation of the 'ch' at the end of 'Bach' doesn't come very naturally to many native English speakers, so Paul's pronunciation ( /bɑːk/, in phonetics) is in fact one of the standard ways of pronouncing Bach's name in both Britain and the USA. The other standard pronunciation ( /bɑːx/ in phonetics) is more similar to the German pronunciation (which is /bax/ in phonetics) but not identical because the 'a' sound is more open and longer than in the German pronunciation. If we Anglo-Saxons started to try and pronounce every composer's name 'authentically' we would soon sound horribly pretentious (think, for example, of the names Fauré, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Granados). There's nothing improper about Paul's pronunciation - or about Paul himself, as far as I can see! 😊
