My break in was as follows: Along the nonrepeating repeating long diagonal, all the cells apart from the ones in box 5 must lie or have equivalents in the Phistomefel ring. Therefore, at least 6 different numbers are in circles. However, as there are 21 circles, they must be the numbers 1-6 as 21=1+2+3+4+5+6.

Yes, this is the way to do it. I didn’t spot it right away, but if you do it’s only a 15 minute solve.

I know it is frustrating to you when you get interrupted repeatedly, Mark, but I think I speak for most of us that we understand and don't mind. And when you share things like your 'road rage' moment with us, it is as much entertainment as is possible while still feeling sympathetic! (Simon's term Schadenfreude comes to mind - sorry!) Regardless, this was a fascinating puzzle and solve, and I loved watching you do it! And January 1st will be a great day - I look forward to a sequel (or prequel?) to the previous Blobz LOTR hunt!

You can also prove that the circles can't include a Seven with the Seven having to be in the R2C2 circle, placing at least an Eight in R2C1. But there can't be an Eight there as there can't be an Eight in the Phistomefel ring.

For me the best way to prove that you cannot use a 7 is to think all the digits in the phistomefel ring must be in circles, so all digits in corners in boxes 3 and 7 are in the Phistomefel ring (and in circles): now you have in the positive diagonal 6 different digits and all of them must be in the circles.

As early as 29:43, Mark missed that the 1 in column 7 has to be in a circle, which eliminates 1’s from any circle not in column 7.

Blobz's Lord of the Rings hunt was one of my favourite of the year, only behind Duality II. A follow up to that with 19 puzzles sounds fantastic.

The hunt is the reward - that is, the monthly Patreon reward that comes out on the first of each month. Mark was saying that the January reward will be a new Sudoku-hunt by Blobz.

WARNING, SPOILER: ... ... ... An easier way to rule out 7 from circles is that the hypothetical 7 in the circle in box 1 would require at least an 8 on a white dot. This won't work, as per Phistomefel ring it would imply an 8 is on the ring (in a circle) which we can't do.
