A few summers ago I was with my mom in my city of Kelowna British Columbia Canada and there’s a pretty rough road on the other side of our lake called Okanagan lake it’s actually the Indian reservation and it is extremely windy, Edit( I mean to say that literally almost every turn is a completely blind turn and extremely dangerous and at least a couple people in either vehicles or bikes die every single year on this road because of it on one side it goes right into a flat cliff face and on the other side it’s a massive cliff that drops right down to the lake and keep in mind Okanagan lake is a very deep lake with strong currents) I’d actually recommend researching Kelowna, British Columbia, Okanagan Lake, and it’s depths have a pretty good picture of what the lake looks like and the road is called West Side Rd. road that runs along the side of the lake and people like to sports cars and cars out there and go pretty quick on that road because it’s super windy. It’s almost rem of a race track. But the average person would go out there and even to do that next to no bikers out there but unfortunately one evening after going to the beach had a great day with my mom and Grandma and on the drive back there was a BMW that was passing people on, the solid lines trying to get ahead of the line of cars because they wanted to speed and kind of race down this road and me and Grandma came up on the most horrific we had seen because this idiot had passed on a double and came flying around a blind corner while Apex and right up as close to the edge of the road as they can and as they were flying around the corner, they hit this poor woman on a road bike right on the backside and well there was a fat line of traffic and were slowly coming up. We see this woman lying on the side of the road with blood, gushing out from her mouth, struggling debris as people are trying to you know, calm down and and and give what first day they can even though we knew she there was nothing that we could do and just seeing the blood gushing from this poor woman’s mouth was so horrific and I’m not gonna lie a lot of us around here don’t like bikers cause in my city. They are extremely entitled but yes, they do have the right to be on the road, but this asshole in this car it was actually a woman was speeding and hit this woman had you have been going at least 80 km an hour right from the back and this poor woman passed away on the side of the road and it was the most horrific thing we had all ever seen… no matter how much you dislike you should still be extremely careful because you may take someone’s life and the woman with four children husband, a loving family and she was taken in such a horrific way and the lady of the car driver was charged, but never went to jail for it and I will say I’m 23 now I was I believe 19 1819 at the time that memory is still burnt into my brain and it was honestly pretty traumatic so as much as bikers need to be careful so do car drivers and my condolences to that woman and any bikers that have to deal with idiots on the road you know they’re 4 to 10 ton vehicles. I do get annoyed sometimes, but I always slow down and give them as much room as possible when passing because sh1t like that shouldn’t happen EVER… and like you said, I know this video is fake, but I have literally witnessed somebody driving past a biker open up their truck door and knock them right off their bike on the exact same road some people in cars can be crazy, and some bikers but we all need to respect each other and learn to respect each other and need to be careful on the road. I’m honestly not sure what to say to that but I guess I can you’re absolutely right. Now that I’m driving I always give bikers a wide berth because I’m especially terrified of being hit in the back of the head by a side view mirror. It’s happened on the very street I bike through almost daily so I never ride in the bike lane on particularly fast roads. We need to encourage more cycling not just for the fun of it and heath benifts but our climate desperately needs it. To do that though we need to rethink how we treat cyclists. I always get annoyed seeing a poorly behaving cyclist speaking for us all, generally we all want to be respectful but on the other hand they do have a point that we very much deserve respect on the roadside. I wish that poor, murdered woman was shown some. We need a mutual respect between drivers and cyclists and an understanding that we need more cyclists but we al deserve respect on the road. As well as understanding that we must curb poor behavior and dangerous/disrespectful attitudes from both hotheaded drivers and cyclists.

To avoid this problem it is quite legal for the motorist to cross those double lines to overtake safely. At least the cyclist aimed for the soft grass, made sure his feet were out of those cleats and rolled to absorb impact.
