The anode rod is the scavenger of your hot water heater. They should be inspected annually and replaced every 2-3 years depending on how corroded yours is. This one was way past due on the Bradford White water heater. Replacing this will make your water heater last for many more years. If you have hard water or run a softener, they need to be replaced more frequently!
