Setting up this generator for a whole home generator. It is a tri fuel meaning I can run it on gasoline, propane, and natural gas. I’m setting this up with a generlink too run my whole house in the event of an emergency. In this video of the series I am setting it up and testing it using propane. In the next series I will set it up to run on natural gas. Finally I will connect everything to the generlink.

I like my Firman Tri-Fuel a lot, especially during the Texas freeze and assorted power outages. The same 1/2" natural gas hose I bought had a 3/8" Female by 1/2" Male brass adapter to connect to the generator. It was too long (deep) on the female end and I had to sand it down so the flange in the adapter would seal against the LP gas fitting on the generator. The other end is a 1/2" male quick disconnect fitting which easily connects to the female fitting attached at the gas valve. I ended up installing a MB Sturgis Propane Elbow Adapter at the generator's 3/8" POL fitting. It is a 3/8" Female Flare Swivel x 3/8" Male Flare (Item # 204163) that I purchased from etrailer . Then I installed the 3/8" Female x 1/2" Male brass adapter there. I can plug the 240V 30A cable to the outlet which is connected to the house electrical panel. I have a 4-ton (46,000 BTU) A/C unit. I installed a Micro-Air EasyStart 368 (4-ton) Soft Starter ASY-368-X48-BLUE. My AC unit now uses 12.8 to 13.8 Amps and a Start Peak of 33 to 36 Amps. My UPS's seem to beep & click when connected to the generator. I have a stupid power strip plugged into the battery backup side of the UPS with items plugged into the strip. All I have to do is move one plug to the surge protector side. And then turn off UPS. Surge protector should still work.

Great explanation! I plan to do the same. How long is your 1/2” gas line ?
@rwstarke
@rwstarke Ай бұрын
@@alanrodgers4156 24 feet long NG hose. The elbow adapter keeps the hose close to the generator and prevents tripping over the hose. Now it is easy to store the 1/2" NG hose on top of the tank. Trying to line up the cable plug with the inlet at night? Take a marker or white-out and make a line on the plug & socket to line up the two before you twist it. Keep battery charged. Install emergency lights that come on when power goes out. Install them where you set up the generator, at the panel and maybe in the main hall of the house. Have an extra spark plug. Maintenance is easier when using natural gas to power the generator.

Great ideas! Really appreciate it. I purchased couple of spark plugs from oreilly as spare. I love your idea of marking it! I have to figure out how long of gas line I need to get, since my generator inlet box is about 75’ away from where I plan to tap the gas. Do you think 50’, 1/2” gas line might have significant loss? The The reason is because i plan to tap from the dryer gas line and my generator would be located about 50 feet away and then I will have 25 feet 50 amp extension cord to connect to my generator inlet box. I don’t know 50 ‘ gas line and 25’ feet extension line would be better or 25 feet gas line and 50’ feet extension cord to the generator inlet would be more efficient?

I read people complaining about the loud noise this Firman T07571 unit makes. My main concern more than the noise is dirty power it apparently provides. At 11%-14% THD, I'm concerned electronics will get damaged. Anyone have comments/opinions on this point?
@BryanHansen
@BryanHansen Жыл бұрын
In my research most "noise" about dirty power are from people who don't own the unit and "think" it won't work well. The THD means it isn't as efficient, not that it is supplying horrible power. Every single person I know that has run this generator and ran it in a whole home scenario like I am has nothing but good things to say about it. This was one of the preferred generators for a generlink transfer switch. I should note that there wasn't a single Honda generator on that list. Honda being the gold standard that everyone seems to hold everybody else to, doesn't even have a model to run with their transfer switch.

@kitchentrout5867
@kitchentrout5867 2 жыл бұрын
Find non ethanol gasoline if you can. That alone has a shelf life of half a year or so but regular pump gas will be fine too. Then get a bottle of Sta-Bil for $10 and add however much you need for the ratio of fuel. This will extend the shelf life to 2 years so that the generator will be ready to rock in case of an outage. After using it for an outage run it with fuel shut off switch on until it shuts off and there is no more gasoline in carburetor. Easy peasy and far more convenient and powerful to use gasoline anyway during an outage unless you want to get a 500 lb propane tank installed or just so happen to have a natural gas line.

@@kitchentrout5867 Tell that to the Honda generator I had that is now ruined after one year. Literally 91 octane ethanol free with sta-bil in it. The whole storing gas thing sounds great in theory until it’s not. I am using natural gas because I do have a line right to my house. I also have propane tanks as well. And in the event that neither of those are feasible I can run gas in it. Can you please take a moment and explain how to properly use this charger on this generator? For example, when the generator is not in use, do you keep this charger plugged into the wall and attached to the generator battery to keep it charged at all times? Also, do you keep it attached when you start it up and while using the generator? Lastly, I know the Noco says it can be used in various modes depending on the battery voltage size and type of battery it is. Do you know what size and type this battery is so I can put it in the correct mode? Sorry for such a large comment. Thank you very much for your time and Thank you for the great informative video.

I would buy the smallest Noco battery tender that I could for this one. It seems like you might be looking at some of the higher end ones, butt this one amzn.to/3lBk7Zn can be permanently mounted to the generator if you want and then just leave it plugged in. You can leave it plugged in when you start it, it doesn't matter. I would leave this on it most or all of the time if you want the battery to be topped off when you go to use it. I personally charge mine up every few weeks and take it off, but not for any reason other than just leaving it on all the time. This generator is purely for emergencies and I have a jump box too so making sure the battery is always charged isn't a huge concern of mine, but that being said, I do have that 2 amp charger on it and plug it in about once every 8 weeks for a day or two. That 2 amp chooses the correct settings for you since it is a trickle charge.

If your back feeding your panel the neutral and ground are connected anyway.

Using the Generlink I installed it is bonded and not a true back feed.
@mp-xt2rg

@@BryanHansen they way a main panel is wired all the neutrals and grounds are connected together by design. So if your connected to the main panel is not an issue. Also connecting neutral and ground together outside the main panel is a code violation. You can end up with the ground acting as neutral and it's a fire hazard.

Answer from Firman... You can use a larger tank but you have to have the LPG fitting switched to match a larger tank and ensure the pressure will be between .9 - 1 PSI going into the generator

@@mpierrela unless we are talking about 100 gallon tank or larger, the fitting is the same for an 80 down to a five. The regulator will still regulate the same pressures.

-Kind Sir, I just bought a new Westinghouse WGen9500DF Generator. And its regulator is on the face of the generator. And you must connect the Propane to this regulator. Now I want to use natural Gas too. So, where would I put the connector; if I do it? And would it damage the Propane Regulator; if I connect the NG to the Propane Regulator inlet? I really want to use the NG gas. Thanks kind Sir if you can tell me WHERE the NG connects to the Generator. Or must I buy an "Adapter" installed on the carburetor? But I do NOT need a regulator; what all others are doing. O yes.

The Westinghouse is a Dual Fuel, not a tri fuel. I don't think you can run that on NG.

@@MrPatdeeee the only thought I had about it is that NG is already low pressure on your house. Adding a regulator might lower the pressure more. Test it, it might get a lower pressure shutoff with the propane regulator if it restricts too much of the already low pressure.

@@BryanHansen Thank you kind Sir. I have got an idea: In my propane regulator there is a long hose from it's outlet. to the carburetor. So I am going to buy a "Y" fitting. With two stop knobs. This would let the NG going after the propane. And the "Y" fitting would determine which is going thorough. You can see tha "Y" on Amazon. In that way, the NG would go straight to the Carb...when the Propane is stopped. And vicy versa when the NG is stopped; it goes through the propane regulator. I can't wait. And I owe it all to you. when You said in the beginning of yur video. That we do NOT need a regulator of a home NG. Because they have ALREADY regulated. Thanks. kind Sir. I believe this will work to make my Generator a TRI-Fuel Whoopee! Wow! I will let you know IF it works or doesn't.

Looks too "delicate" for me. I live in Florida and I have 3 older gennys. One is a fifteen year old Coleman. All Gas only and super-dependable. Sometimes 2 years between uses...but when I need them... they start....every time. I do a very close check of the units before they are carefully stored, ready for the next emergency.
