Okay, I just realized one of the reasons your videos are so good and entertaining: you tell a classic story. At first you demonstrate the problem by turning on the tool. Then you take us through the story of figuring out what's wrong and fixing it while adding in vignettes and anecdotes. Lastly you build tension by saying, "but will she run?" and then, of course she does, "that's her!", and everyone lives happily ever after (unless you're a DeWalt tool that only needs a controller).

I've had an idea you could try with the DeWalt planers. Open up the bearing retainer socket in the housing with an end mill in the drill press. Shim the hole with a piece of pvc pipe. Then, recut the pvc to fit the bearing. The bearing retainer socket has a hole in the center, which makes it easy to locate.

Was a fan of Dewalt before, but stopped being one after watching your videos. Will buy only Makita from now on.
@luthmhor3 ай бұрын
You’ve not watched all of them then I guess. Dewalt makes good tools, they are more robust than Milwaukee, and many are better designed than Makita tools. Makita is falling into the same trap of not allowing each part to be replaced, but entire parts assemblies. Makita or dewalt tends to be the best for your money, but it is always tool specific. Dewalt drills are better, their new corded grinders are generally better too, Makitas old grinders, the ones with a ton of glass fibre in the plastic, those are amazing too, you can still buy them. Dewalt is a solid brand and the warranty and service in US and Canada is excellent. Makita market share is less here than in Europe. Milwaukee on the other hand is garbage.
@luthmhor3 ай бұрын
Generally speaking, Makita is better quality and more repairable, but not by a lot, and as I said, some tools are actually worse. If you watch deans 100k sub special I’m pretty sure he outlines what Makita tools to avoid.
@dougsaunders81093 ай бұрын
In fairness the parts might be in the expensive side but repaired most. My guess re planer, no one saw the bearing causing case issues therefore only loose blades smashing the whole housing, hence being able to buy the front assembly separately

Not a bad fix score on all the Dewalts. On the mistery ball: it might have came from the impact piece. For example the bigger impact Makita drivers DTW1001 have a bunch of these balls in em. Don't know the deal on the Dewalt ones. But I do agree it rather had the size of a toolholder ball.

You would think that there would be more protection to the spindle bearings on a planer. Just looked up the parts diagram of the Makita one. Its the same, just bearings on a shaft. Should have at least an aditional washer on the shaft to act as a debris shield or a primitive labyrinth seal like ive seen on some Makita sanders. Its just a plastic washer with a deep groove on the shaft and a corresponding ring on the housing but works wonders to shield the bearing.

We need to hit these companies where it hurts, if a tool is not economical to repair, then instead of replacing like with like, buy it from another manufacturer who respects their customers better, and let the old company know thats what you are going to do, you never know they might send you a replacement to keep your custom, or at the very least change their ways.

I am disappointed in my DeWalt tools, most of the batteries are not charging anymore and the tools are worn out and have some bad design issues so not spending money on new batteries. The planer chip port always clogs even after cutting away plastic and if I cut more the hose won't fit on any more, frustrating! Some of the chucks are not holding bits and need constant tightening. Batteries are loose and power cuts out. Not made to last!

Hi Dean, frankly DeWalt are a pack of arseholes for the way they sell spare parts. Have you ever tried replacing the chuck on a DCD960? My DCD960 had a damaged chuck and you can imagine my surprise when I found out it isn’t a replaceable part, the cockheads at DeWalt expect you to buy a complete transmission with the chuck fitted. Well in Australia that costs more than the drill so I pulled mine apart and worked out how to replace it. It’s not easy and requires very high heat (I used an oxy acetylene torch) but mine has been fine since the repair. I made a KZbin video of how I did it and I’m happy that others have had success repairing theirs. A couple of people have not been careful with the reassembly so the hammer mechanism stays on all the time which means disassembling the transmission again to fix it. I love your channel. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

I'm still amazed by how the heck the first impact driver bit got so stuck on. of all of dean's many videos, this one single repair is the first that really made me go holy fecking sheeeeeet. all that trouble and time just because someone couldn't be bothered to wiggle the bit and make sure it was in properly. and how the heck did dewalt manage to make their impact drivers so damn complicated? do their engineers have to go through some sort of special training to make their machines so f*****ing weird? and I wonder what the turnover on their assembly lines is like. folks must be going nuts and quitting every week lol. I thank my lucky stars I happened to buy makita when I went cordless. Never had a fault that I couldn't repair myself using simple common sense. If I had gone dewalt, with the number of nuts I have to sink each day, fixing those things would have made my nuts go nuts.

This sounds like a great thing to refurbish the housing as it is a common point of failure on the dewalt planer: If you created a precise re-grinding tool (a kind of reamer with a extended aligning pin) to be able to self-align center by the remaining hole (there is a center hole that goes thru housing), you could regrind the hole precisely by 0.5 or 1 milimeter larger to fit a slightly larger bearing. There is more than enough plastic around the bearing, and maybe a larger bearing would also last slightly longer. All that matters is, that the bearing is centered properly, bearing size itself is not a important factor here.

I dont see why on them DeWalt planers you arent just slinging a metal sleeve into that bearing housing and just using a forstner bit to ream it out to the right diameter and gluing it in. Saves having to buy the whole housing and you're doing what DeWalt should have done to start with but cheaped out on...
